Vintage Music & an Antique Mirror

January 26, 2016 by Patti 30 Comments

A good friend looks out for you. They will tell you if you have a piece of spinach caught in your teeth. They will let you know that your slip is hanging below your dress - although that might be the look you’re going for since that’s currently the fashion. They will surely let you know that you have an inch long hair growing out of your cheek.

Good friends take care of one another.

Another thing about good friends is that they love you just the way you are - midrift bulges; sags and wrinkles; squinty I-forgot-to-bring-my-glasses eyes. They even love your, “Have I told you this story before?” memory.

Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to antique and vintage pieces. With all their crackly, chippy, faded beauty they remind me just a little bit of myself.

I wanted to share with you today, another aspect of my At Long Last Dining Room Reveal, this sweet French Country mirror.

I fell in love with this mirror when I first saw it in an antique store back in Olympia, Washington. It’s shabby goodness spoke to my heart.

I even liked the fact that the silvering on the back of the mirror was peeling because it gave me the perfect opportunity to place some of my vintage sheet music behind the mirror.

This may be SHOCKING to some of you purists but I even chipped away a tiny bit more of the silver so the music would really stand out.

Fun Fact: Before the 19th century mirrors were silvered (the name of the mirroring process) with an amalgam of tin and mercury. By the 19th century when this mirror was made the silvering process was done with real silver. Today aluminum or other compounds are more often used.

I love the look of the musical notes on yellowed paper peeking out from behind the mirror, and it is such fun when someone walks into my dining room and stops to take a second look!

If you are going to be an antique you might as well be the best looking antique you can be!

Speaking of looking your best you might be interested in checking out my Fab Over Fifty Pinterest board to see some of the looks I love to wear, because who says we older gals aren’t worth a “second look?”

If you are a lover of mirrors like I am, you might also like my Mirror, Mirror on the Wall Pinterest board.

Just looking out for you FRIENDS 😉

Thanksgiving Table all Fouled Up!

November 22, 2015 by Patti 13 Comments

What a dilemma I was in when I recently came into possession of something so delightfully gorgeous that I wanted to share it with all my friends and family . . . but since I’m not hosting a Thanksgiving dinner this year (and it’s a part of the Thanksgiving centerpiece) I knew it would remain unseen by all those I hold most dear.

What does one do in such a dilemma? One blogs about it of course!

Mr. OTN happens to work a job where he has to work every other Thanksgiving and this year is one of those. Thus, no big Thanksgiving dinner. Even so, as I was playing around with my Fall centerpiece and the placement of my delightfully gorgeous new acquisition the other day I began wondering how it would look with a fully set Thanksgiving table.

The china that my mom passed down to me, Noritake’s Royal Hunt, called out to me from the buffet and before I knew it I was laying everything out for a photo shoot.

The sun was streaming in through the plantation shutters that day, casting such a delightful display of light and shadow in my room that you can see how I really couldn’t help myself.

I love having my mother’s china for the holidays. Even if we aren’t hosting a big Thanksgiving dinner it makes for a nice display.

Each plate has three pictures around the border, an elk . . .

. . . a pheasant . . .

. . . and a bunny rabbit!

All the plates have small hunting dogs dancing around the edges of their lovely plaid border.

The gold flatware was also given to me by my mom. I’m so happy that gold is “in” again.

But THIS! Look at this delightfully gorgeous foul, Mr. Pheasant, with his colorful feathers and beaded backside! I’m sorry you can’t see how much they sparkle in my photographs.

He is simply the perfect addition to my Thanksgiving table!

Mr. Pheasant was purchased on a recent trip to the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC. I wasn’t going to buy him but I was with a friend who likes to encourage me to do things for myself. In fact, she talked me into making two purchases that day, Mr. Pheasant and some amazing glittery branches that I added to the top of my Christmas tree. Yes, my tree is decorated already but that’s for another post.

I will miss hosting a dinner this year but I can still enjoy this wonderful gift from my mom.

As soon as the Fall decor is put away I’ll be back to share the before and after pictures of my dining room makeover. There will be a ton of fun details in that post so I do hope you’ll come back and see me again.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving holiday,

Redeemed & Restored - A Little Painted Hutch

November 16, 2015 by Patti 34 Comments

There she was was, one among many in a jam packed antique mall. She’d been there a long, long time but today they’d put a new price on her in hopes of moving her out quickly to make room for better pieces. Many people came and walked around this petite lady, checking out her classic lines, only to walk away when they saw the raw signs of wear and the peeling veneer . . .

. . . until the one came, the one who was much like her. The one who chose her and took her home to give her a new life.

Many long days and nights were spent on her restoration, and in the process the lines began to blur between the life of the restorer and the one being restored as comparisons were made of their similarities. Peeling veneers were repaired, putty used to fill the larger cracks, and experiments with different colored paints were tried to see what she would become. No, this one was not meant to be a bold colored statement piece. Nor was she meant to be a sophisticated lacquered lady. This one’s past, it was determined, would be allowed to shine through the layers of paint that would eventually bring her to this soft and muted color.

This petite one was solidly built by her original creator and as she is restored she becomes even stronger.

When the transformation is complete she looks different than before but her original character still shines through.

Her freshly cleaned and painted interior is carefully filled with treasures from generations past.

These treasures remind her of the values instilled within her by family members when she was young.

They also remind her of lessons learned from friends and acquaintances who intersected path along the way.

Of course she can’t help but recall lessons she learned through her own mistakes!

If you move in real close you’ll see this lady’s imperfections quite clearly . . .

. . . and the wear that came from living life long and full.

Life wounded this one deeply at times . . .

. . . but the pain that caused the visible scars is long past and nothing more than distant memory.

Mostly now she recalls the joys of her life. She has been blessed with much, MUCH joy!

See the layers of color representing childhood, young adulthood, motherhood, career, and now a sweet time of less responsibility but a passion to continue living life to the fullest! And always with the expectancy of, “What’s next?”

Though she was once closed and private, she doesn’t mind throwing her doors wide open now to share with others the pathway to becoming beautiful. Though it is at times frightening to her, and sometimes others don’t like what they see in her or what she has to share, she has been called to this purpose of giving back to others what she has so freely been given.

This one, she is different than those around her, and though she once detested her differences she is now at peace with who she is. The once shy girl has come out of her shell of insecurity. She laughs freely now and loves to make others laugh along with her. She believes that others can find the same freedom to be who they were created to be and loves to offer to let them borrow her hope until they can find their own. She is often heard to say,

Wait for the miracle! Click To Tweet

In reality, we are all different. Unique creations made to love and be loved by Father God. Fighting your way through life all alone can be hard. Sometimes it takes another person coming alongside to help point us in the direction God originally intended for us to go. God tells us that His way is easy and His burden is light. Won’t you place your life into the Master’s hands and let Him do the work of bringing you into complete restoration?

Take it from a little painted hutch,

There is no joy greater than to finally become what God originally intended us to be. Click To Tweet

I’d love to pray for those of you who are struggling in any way. Simply leave your prayer request in the comment section. I moderate all of my comments so if you’d like your prayer to be private please let me know.

Blessings to you dear ones,

Will You be My Shopping Buddy? - The Old Luckett’s Store

August 24, 2015 by Patti 18 Comments

Do you like shopping with girlfriends? I LOVE it, and I am wayyy . . . past due for a girlfriend’s shopping day. In fact, it is one of the things I miss the most since moving from Washington State to South Carolina last year. I had the bestest shopping buddies back home and my hubby never worried about our shopping dates because we had more fun being together and laughing with each other than spending a lot of money and having to pack around a bunch of bags (though that can be fun too)!

Well, I haven’t found new shopping buddies here in SC yet so maybe y’all will come with me. Or maybe ALL y’all will come with me, because that’s the way we say it here when there are more than a few people. Are you in? Great! If you don’t mind, I’d like to make a stop at Starbucks for a Grande Soy Iced Caramel Macchiatto. Maybe you’d like something to drink for the road too? My treat!

Today’s shopping trip won’t be for clothes. My buddies and I used to love going to Bellevue Square and spent a lot of time in Nordstrom’s shoe department (Roses’s favorite). Today, since I’m doing the driving, I’ll be taking you to a very special place that I visited for the first time while on vacation this month. The Old Luckett’s Store! Now this would NOT be Roses’s favorite place because she isn’t fond of used things, but she was always a sport and went along for the ride. I don’t really think it was Debbie’s thing either but it grew on her, and since she and her hubby bought our old house she’s been seen frequenting places like this more and more.

Anyhoo, let’s get started. When we enter the doors of Luckett’s you are in for a real treat. Enough talk already. Explore away. And be sure to let me know if you come across any old corbels!

Oh look! Here’s Mr. OTN holding a shutter to match my eyes. He is the sweetest and I never know where he might turn up!

He also found the very corbels I’ve been searching for! Muah!

Did you find anything inside the store that you couldn’t live without? Let’s head outside for some more shopping.

Amazing yes?

Can you say PERFECT PATINA?

The Old Luckett’s Store 42350 Luckett’s Rd Leesburg, VA 20176 703-779-0268

The sweet ladies working at Luckett’s showed me this before and after picture of the store and I would be remiss not to share it with y’all. I’m as much in love with the house as it’s contents.

Thank you SO much dear friends for indulging me by going along with me on this virtual shopping trip. I wish I could have you here in person so we could “Oooh” and “Ahhh” together. After a morning of shopping we’d find a fun place to have a light lunch followed by a heavy dessert (shared of course). Then we might indeed find a Nordy’s (a native Seattleite’s nickname for Nordstrom’s) where we would look at all of the pretty clothes, and maybe find a great pair of new shoes. Once we were done there we would need another coffee or tea before hitting the road back home.

It’s been a great day with friends whom I adore. See ya’ soon!

Blessings,

Giving Baskets a Vintage Look With Chalk Paint

July 6, 2015 by Patti 27 Comments

Timeworn, aged, faded, shabby. All words to describe those well-worn flea market baskets that catch my eye and pull at my heart. So I was excited a couple of years ago to receive my mother-in-law’s old wicker laundry basket. Mr. OTN, who is no youngsta’, has memories of being pulled across the floor in this basket by his older brothers.

How sweet then, that it came home to live with us. Here is a picture of said basket as shared in our Den Reveal last Fall. It is perfect just the way it is and I wouldn’t think of touching it with a paintbrush!

However . . . some of the baskets I have around my home are neither old nor precious, so this past week I decided to touch up a few of them with paint to give them that well worn look that I love.

Ageing baskets is one of the quickest and easiest projects you’ll ever do!

First, a “before” view of the baskets I painted . . .

Weathered baskets 013

Weathered baskets 001

Weathered baskets 007

. . . and here they are “after” painting.

Weathered baskets 019

On my powder room trash can I used my Homemade Chalk Paint recipe and paint that Home Depot mixed to match Annie Sloan’s chalk paint color French Linen.

Weathering Baskets With Paint 004

For this flower basket I used Home Depot’s match to Annie Sloan’s Country Grey.

Weathered Baskets 033

Weathered baskets 021

Weathered Baskets 031

For the rest of my baskets I layered both colors, French Linen and Country Grey, by dry brushing on alternating layers of paint. You can see the beginning of that process below.

French Linen . . .

. . . followed by Country Grey.

I simply kept layering alternating colors until I liked what I saw. My kitchen baskets were sealed with a bit of dark wax for added protection and to age them even more.

These are the Home Depot colors I used.

That’s it. A simple afternoon project that makes a big difference in how things look.

I’ve been adding a few new touches to my kitchen and my aged baskets fit right in. I’ll be back later this week to share more pictures in Adding Personality to a Kitchen. Until then, thank you dear readers for stopping by. I hope you have one fantastic week!
