An Unexpected Gift Outside my Door & Lessons Learned

June 27, 2015 by Patti 23 Comments

“This thing isn’t working out too well,” declared Mr. OTN after being jabbed in the side of the face for the umteenth time by a wayward piece of faux lavender.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with it.  I keep pushing the flowers back in place and they keep getting all messed up,” my answer, as I once again began rearranging the floral arrangement on our front door.

Spring Basket on Front Door 029

I loved THIS Spring Floral Arrangement.  I took pictures of it and blogged about it and lots of other people liked it too!  So what WAS wrong with it?

A couple of times I chalked up the mysteriously mutilated arrangement to inclement weather, high winds and rain . . . but then I would go out to the porch on a perfectly calm Spring day and find it all messed up again.

While fighting the daily battle with the mysteriously out-of-control flower arrangement, different people would stop by for a visit and when they did we would open the door really, REALLY wide so they could get through the opening without having to dodge around the wild branches sticking straight out from the door.  I would apologize, straighten everything up again and invite my friends inside.

You’d think I would’ve suspected something . . . the day I opened the front door and a bird whooshed right past my head into the dining room.  The bird was terrified and I wasn’t feeling too brave either (my first horror movie was The Birds) but after a chase and a scream and a lot of barking by the dogs, I opened the front door wide while we retreated to the back of the house, to wait for the bird to leave.  She did.

You’d think I would’ve suspected something . . . when I went out to clean up the front porch and it was littered with bits of dried leaves and twigs (in the Spring?), as well as a few birdy droppings.

Finally . . . there came the day when a very tall man rang the doorbell.  Hubby and I were expecting him so we went to the front door together and I did my usual thing of opening the door really, really wide so this stranger wouldn’t receive a poke to the eye as he came inside.

He didn’t step over the threshold though.  He pointed his finger at my once pretty floral arrangement (was he about to point out what an unholy mess it was?) and said,

Bird's Nest 1

“Is that a bird’s nest?”

And yes.  It was.  A sweet little bird’s nest built right into my flower arrangement.  Hidden from my too-short-to-see view behind the flowers in front.

Bird's Nest 039

We let it be after that and decided to wait until we were sure that the nest was empty.  I only hoped I hadn’t crushed any eggs in all my pushing and shoving and rearranging of flowers that would never stay in place.

Bird's nest 029

Finally yesterday, when I felt that any baby birds would by now have safely flown the nest, I carefully began removing flowers to reveal this precious little nest (and . . . PHEW . . . no evidence of broken eggs!).  If I was thinking of doing something new and different for my summer door decor those ideas flew right out of my head as I realized that this was the best door arrangement ever!

Bird's nest 027

I tucked couple of flowers back in to fill space around the nest and it was done!  It was enough.  It was and was PERFECT!

If I was a little impressed with my floral arrangement before this one far exceeds my own attempts at beauty.

Bird's Nest 041

Lessons learned:

Sometimes when frustrations come into our lives and we keep trying to “fix it” to no avail, it might be that God is in the midst of building something new.

Sometimes our very best attempts, the things we take pride in, are overshadowed by that which is simple.

Sometimes the best gifts aren’t the showiest or the most expensive, but those that are absolutely free!

Finally. . . don’t be short-sighted (look up, look down, look all around) and don’t miss out on the wonder that surrounds you!

Blessings,

Feeling sad . . . a Tribute to my Friends.

June 24, 2015 by Patti 22 Comments

I was going to write a happy post today.  It was going to be filled with pretty pictures of things I’ve been working on.  In it I hoped to say some witty things to make you smile.  I was actually  in the midst of mulling over what I’d say as I drove home from a trip to the happiest place on earth . . . Home Depot . . . when, Ding, Ding . . . went my phone, and the Messenger window popped open.

It was my friend, my life-long friend, letting me know that her husband had passed in his sleep on Sunday night.

I knew he hadn’t been well for a long while but still . . . it was a shock.  You see, it was only yesterday that we were mere teenagers who double dated together.  It was only yesterday that I was a bridesmaid in their  Spring wedding.  It was only yesterday when, only months later, she was to be a bridesmaid at my Winter wedding but was too embarrassed to stand up front with her pregnant belly. 🙂

Today’s post is a tribute to the life of my friends who, for the sake of privacy I’ll call:

Danny & Sandy

Danny & Sandy

Danny was nothing short of COOL!  He looked really tough . . . though he was as gentle as could be.  He had a muscle car and Levi’s and shaggy hair and a beard.  He was a big guy who road a Harley and didn’t look like someone you’d want to mess with.

Sandy was his opposite.  She was a church girl who went to beauty school, had REAL blond hair and wore pretty clothes.  She was a loving kinda gal but not a pushover by any means!

Over the years life happened and we drifted our own ways, Sandy and me.  Whenever we did get together though it was like we’d never been apart and we always shared without reservation about the various struggles and triumphs in each of our lives.

Life wasn’t perfect for Danny and Sandy.  They had, like most married couples, times where they weren’t sure they would make it. They had a bunch of babies who grew into adults, then those adult children gave them a bunch of grandbabies . . . They struggled and never gained great wealth but they had and have a family who is close and who loves deeply.

Life wasn’t perfect for me either.  I made some bad choices.  At times I opted out rather than persevere.  I think I took a little longer to grow up and settle in.  Eventually life turned around for me and became very good.  That is where I am today.

So just a couple of weeks ago, when I posted on Facebook about our adventure down to Florida to buy a painting for my dining room my friend Sandy messaged me and said,

“Painting is beautiful . . . I look at it and see you . . . You have the most amazing life Patti.”

Old Door Mirror & Dining Room Wallpaper 006

“Hahaha!,” I wrote back, “The amazing life of Patti Krank! You know me well my longest lifetime friend and you know my life is far from perfect. I have fun though and I am blessed.”

Her reply,

“Life is an amazing journey isn’t it! Trials and troubles come but when Jesus is the center of your focus He sees you thru…and then once you get on the other side of it you look back and realize his hand was on me and He was there all the time, seeing me thru…what a blessing.”

This loving message from someone watching her husband slowly die of congestive heart failure.  And Danny . . . what kind of suffering has he been going through, knowing that his time was coming to an end?  How hard it must’ve been to say goodbye to his beloved wife of forty years and his children and grandchildren.

Today, as we messaged back and forth Sandy said that she has the assurance that Danny is in heaven with the Lord.  That assurance brings peace.

So you see now, why I couldn’t write a light and happy post today.  Tears flow as I grieve for my friend’s heartbreak and this world’s loss of a wonderful husband and father . . . on Father’s Day.  I think I also grieve a bit over how short this life really is . . . because it was only yesterday . . .

I hope that in Heaven Danny is riding his Harley at full throttle, feeling strong and free in the Presence of Jesus.

A Powder Room & Learning to be Content

June 17, 2015 by Patti 21 Comments

Sometimes I see too much beauty.

Botanical Powder Room

Favorite bloggers Homes on Parade.  Gorgeous magazine spreads highlighting the newest trends.  Unending Pinterest pins of serene master bedrooms, spa-like bathrooms, gourmet chef kitchens . . .

Botanical Powder Room

Though I love scouring magazines and blogs for inspiration there are times when it leaves me with a sense of discontent.  Is anyone else like me?

Botanical Powder Room

When my friend Leslie of GoodbyeHouseHelloHome hears anyone complain about their “lack” she says,

     “Poor American!”

Yes, poor me, with my large Southern Colonial filled with treasures pulled together over years of collecting, thrifting and inheriting.

Though my home is not what magazines scream that it should be, it is a home that reflects who I am and what I love.

Botanical Powder Room

This is one room I wanted to change when we bought our home in South Carolina last year.

Botanical Powder Room

My powder room:  Standard issue cabinets, countertops made of some indeterminate material, and Dark. Green. Wallpaper.

In my discontent I made plans . . .  I wanted to take down the paper and replace it with a fresh graphic print, I wanted to find an antique piece that could be turned into a stunning vanity fitted with a gorgeous marble sink, I wanted new light fixtures that dripped crystals, I wanted . . . I wanted . . . I wanted . . .

Botanical Powder Room

Then something happened.

Tweet: Because I couldn’t have everything I wanted, or maybe because I began to feel like I shouldn’t have everything I wanted, my attitude changed . . .

. . . and my feelings about this room changed.

Botanical Powder Room

When I really began to really see the wallpaper, it’s botanical print and soothing color appealed to me more and more.  I love boxwood and have decorated with preserved boxwood throughout my home (HERE).  This wallpaper encompasses the powder room in boxwood and reflects the lovely view of nature seen through the bathroom window into our backyard.

Botanical Powder Room

My solution was to embrace the beauty of nature by hanging some botanical prints (downloaded free from Vintage Printables).  I displayed them in CLEARANCE frames from Hobby Lobby (sometimes I buy my frames at the thrift store and paint them but this time HL’s were less expensive).

Botanical Powder Room

Next I put a few magnolia flowers in a vase (leftover flowers from THIS magnolia swag in my kitchen).

Botanical Powder Room

Botanical Powder Room

Finally, I put a large tray on the counter and dressed it with an antique lamp and vintage stacked containers (both belonged to my mom) along with some pretty green soaps and a couple of new hand towels from TJ Maxx.

Botanical Powder Room

The tray and the tissue holder are tiled with shell-like material . . .

Botanical Powder Room

. . . and when I put them on the counter I noticed that the sink is shaped like a large white shell. Insert SMILEY FACE here!

I’m happy with my new powder room now even though not much has really changed . . . except my way of thinking.

Botanical Powder Room

Mr. OTN and I have a long list of things we talk about doing with our house, but lately, I’ve been feeling the need to step back and make purposeful decisions based on what’s really important to us.  Maybe this week it is to do a fresh update in my dining room (hanging wallpaper this very week!) or maybe it is to take a portion of what we have and share it to bless someone else.

At peace in my Southern Home.

Freedom Friday – When You’re Not Enough

June 12, 2015 by Patti 17 Comments

Do you ever feel like you’re not enough?  Not pretty enough, not clever enough, not perky enough, not young enough, not old enough?  Believe it or not, there was a time . . . long, long ago . . .  when I could hardly wait for the time that I’d be old enough to attain the respect I felt was my due.  I’ve overcome that 🙂

Welcome to FREEDOM FRIDAY – A devotional, emotional, spiritual and sometimes hysterical series that I will be sharing on occasional Fridays, in addition to my regular Old Things New posts. Why?  Because though once bound in chains Christ has set me free –  FREE to live, to love, to dance, to sing, to be who God created me to be!

Savannah Houses

I was raised by hard working, salt-of-the-earth type parents who instilled values in me that said, “God helps those who help themselves” and, “Do everything you can and leave the rest to God.”

Hmmm . . .

Is a 50-50 proposition between God and me what He really wants?

Beaufort, SC

Today’s culture tells us that we can become whatever we want to be and that success is ours for the taking.  We simply have to strive harder, reach farther, believe in ourselves, and never give up.  Good positive thoughts right?

So what if we work and strain and struggle to be the best we can be and fail? And we will all fail eventually. What room does all this striving leave for the miraculous, the extraordinary, the astounding, the incredible, the unbelievable?

Beaufort, SC

Oh . . . that’s what I want!  I don’t want to do it on my own power when I can have the power of the living God working in and through me to accomplish things greater than I could ever ask or think.

The following is a list of *STEPS I’ve personally taken to change my feeling of not being enough to being exactly what God wants me to be.

  •  Let go of your perception of being in control (because things will eventually spin out of your control).
  • Acknowledge that God is God and you are not Him.
  • Turn your life over to God (if you haven’t already), accepting Jesus as Savior and allowing Him to fill you with His Spirit.
  • Confess past sin and believe that the shame, guilt and condemnation you’ve carried no longer have power or authority over you (I feel a “how to” post coming on that one).
  • Forgive those who’ve hurt you (and maybe a “how to” post here as well).
  • Take responsibility and acknowledge wrong to those you’ve hurt (and here!).
  • Keep a short record of wrongs . . . or, in other words, take responsibility for your actions as soon as you “mess up” and choose to forgive others quickly when they “mess up”.
  • Spend time with God – in His Word and in prayer – seeking to know Him intimately as “Papa God”.  Don’t rush in and out of this time, making it an empty ritual, but stay . . . wait . . . and listen for Him to speak to you.  In this time with Him He will affirm you, comfort you, wrap His arms around you and whisper sweet secrets into your ear. He longs to reveal Himself to you, to tell you who you really are in Him and to open up to you what He can do in and through you!  It is in this place alone with Him that He will strengthen you to go out into your daily life so filled with Holy Spirit power that the overflow will spill over onto the lives of those around you.
  • This is the last step:  When you come out of that place of fellowship with God, filled and strengthened by Him, go out and let the overflow of His love spill on to others!

Savannah, GA Please know this from one who once felt like she was not enough:  As a redeemed child of God, a Christ follower, filled with the Holy Spirit you have everything you need.

You are not too little, you are not too much, you are exactly who God created you to be.

Prayer:  Dear Papa God, from the depths of my heart I pray and ask that all who read these words will be touched by You and that they will come to understand that they no longer have to strive in their own power but that real strength can be found in You.  You are all we need and You give us all we need at just the right time.  Lord, please strengthen, affirm, encourage and do a new thing in the lives of those who need it today.  Amen.

Scripture to ponder:  Psalm 28:7; Psalm 46:10; Isa. 43:19; Zech. 4:6; Matt. 11:28; John 15:15; I Cor. 2:10; Gal. 3:3; Eph. 2:10; Eph. 3:20; Phil, 4:13; Phil. 4:19; II Pet. 1:3

The *STEPS mentioned above are loosely based on The 12 Steps of AA.  Freedom Session teaches a Scriptural basis for all 12 steps in an excellent 9 month healing/discipleship program.  As a former Director, along with my hubs, I can’t help but plug this life changing ministry here on my blog!  For more information about Freedom Session I’ve included a link to their website.

A Sweet Purchase & My Meeting With a Superstar Blogger!

June 6, 2015 by Patti 18 Comments

Have you ever found that perfect “something” for your home?  You really, REALLY wanted it until you began to feel like maybe you wanted it too much? Have you ever questioned whether your desire for things was out of balance with what is really important in life?

I left you hanging earlier this week with my post about being on the verge of something exciting thanks to my husband’s desire to make me happy.

cherubsoilpainting (2)

My blog friend Sherry at No Minimalist Here, has recently downsized and has been having a virtual garage sale of items from her own home.  THIS painting became the object of my desire!  I have always loved this painting on the header of Sherry’s blog.  The colors are so soothing and, in fact, as mentioned in a previous post, Sherry’s blog header was the color inspiration for my living room.

When I saw that this painting was up for sale I immediately began to yearn for it.  I drooled, I swooned, I nearly fainted over it.  Okay, so I’m exaggerating, but I had a strong desire to purchase this painting for my “work in process” dining room.  The problem is that Sherry lives in Florida and I live in South Carolina (an 8 hour drive) and shipping would be too expensive.  After obsessing on this painting for awhile I began to reevaluate my painting lust, especially as I began to think about all that I have and weighed that against what is really important in life.  I felt convicted and decided that I needed to give it up.  I prayed.  I thanked God and I closed that door.

“When are we going to take our road trip?,” hubby asked one morning last week.

“Whaaaa?”

“I think we should head out Monday morning.”

Lesson learned:  Sometimes you have to give something up before it can become yours.

Sherry No Minimalist 007

So here I am with Sherry, Superstar Blogger at No Minimalist Here!

Forgive me if I gush but Sherry’s blog is one of the first blogs I followed and you can’t believe how excited this (then) newbie blogger was when she followed me back!  That was in the days when I reported every follow to my patient husband and tolerant daughters until it got to the point where they thought I had gone “blog crazy”.

I adore Sherry’s style and her blog is a never ending source of inspiration.  I never dreamed that I’d have the opportunity to meet her and even be invited into her home.  I had to restrain myself from prattling on and on about every little thing I saw as she gave us the tour (not so sure I did very well with that).  The funny thing to me was, that my husband also gushed over Sherry’s home.  He even took my camera from me and started taking pictures!

Sherry No Minimalist 005

This is one of Sherry and I standing in front of her Trumeau mirror flanked by the sea fans that she dyes herself.

Sherry No Minimalist 001

Here we are in Sherry’s dining room with the painting behind us.  The history of this canvas is that it is a 19th century painting that originally hung in Jamestown Plantation in Virginia.  What a beautiful conversation piece it will be in my dining room.  I wonder what the story will sound like?  Will I talk about it’s historic roots or will I talk more about meeting the beautiful and gracious Sherry and the story behind how the picture came to belong to me?  History runs deep.

Wallpapering 005

So guess what I’ve been plugging away at (with 1-1/2 hands) since we got back from our whirlwind trip to Florida?  Preparing my dining room for new wallpaper.

The room had two layers of wallpaper.  The first one came off easily.  The second had been applied directly to the sheet rock without proper preparation (sizing), and when I began to remove it it took the top layer of the sheet rock right off.  That was several months ago and it has lived that way until now.

Wallpapering 006

Without renewed motivation this past couple of days I sanded away the torn paper . . .

Wallpapering 010

. . . and applied a skim coat of joint compound.  After it dried I used a sanding block to knock down the rough surfaces, wiped off the dust with a damp rag and left it to air dry.

Dining Room Wallpapering 001

My next step will be to roll on a primer that is specially formulated for wallpaper.  I’m pushing through tonight because I have company coming from Washington State this upcoming week and may not get back to it for awhile.  Hmmm . . . unless I can get my company to assist in the wallpapering.  3- 1/2 hands are always better than 1- 1/2 hands.

Old Door Mirror & Dining Room Wallpaper 006

On the way home from Florida Mr. OTN said to me, “You know we did this because I love you right?”

I knew.
