The War Room, Friends, & Polishing the Silver

September 24, 2015 by Patti 15 Comments

Sometimes I get SO distracted. As I began creating a Fall arrangement for my dining room table I decided that I must have one of those large acorns for the arrangement that would go on my kitchen counter. I traveled to the kitchen and began arranging that bowl and soon realized that I needed one of the white pumpkins I’d placed there for the small terrarium on my kitchen table.

It didn’t stop there. From those three arrangements I took some velvet pumpkins up to our guest rooms and, lo and behold, I noticed that the tray in the blue room had tarnished handles!

Downstairs again , I pulled out the silver polish.

Note: This is seriously the best silver polish ever. It literally melts tarnish away.

Realizing the bottle was running low I decided to use it up. Thus began the gathering and polishing of more silver pieces, and then some more, and then some more, until I had polished every piece of silver on the main floor of my house!

In the end, my three Fall arrangements were still a shambles.

Last week I shared a bit of my heart with you HERE and honestly, I can’t begin to express how blessed I am to have readers like you, who responded with such an abundance of encouragement.

I shouldn’t be amazed . . . but I am . . . by how much God cares about our feelings. He made us for each other, to love one another, as a way of showing His love for us.

With all of the encouragement I received I honestly began to feel so bad that I had made y’all feel bad (especially since some of you are struggling with much harder things than I am) that I started to write something funny today to make everyone feel better! Then I realized that the right thing to do is to just say THANK YOU!

Can I brag on God a little more? Do you remember my mentioning that I miss having friends who live near enough to message and say, “Do you want to meet for a cuppa’ Joe?” Within a few hours of my post appearing on Facebook I received a comment asking that very question. That message came from an acquaintance, a friend-of-a-friend, someone I’d met only once at a lunch where we’d sat at opposite ends of the table.

So though I felt a little bit embarrassed, and a little nervous, and a little bad that I made anyone feel sorry for me, because honestly I’m not an attention seeking type of person, I said, “Yes”.

Do any of you remember how easy it was to make friends when we were little girls, when all of the complications of being grown women didn’t get in the way of connecting quickly? This was like that! I believe that this is just the beginning of a great good friendship.

Another way God encouraged me this week was at the grocery store where I was greeted warmly by a woman from the church we’ve attended these past two Sundays. After feeling like a stranger in our new town for the past year you can imagine how good it felt to see a familiar face and to be recognized by someone.

Within the last few days I feel like God has been stripping away sadness like tarnish from silver and I have renewed hope for this new adventure we’re on.

The last thing I want to tell you about is the most important, and what I believe was the catalyst for change. I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie War Room, but even before I penned my sad post, Mr. OTN spent time in his “war room” praying to God on my behalf. He prayed as hard as he’s ever prayed, even begging God for answers (begging God is not something he’s very comfortable with but he was desperate. You see, he has been feeling the sadness too and even wondering if he made the right decision in moving us here).

Shortly afterwards, while sitting on our screened porch, he received a very real (repeat VERY REAL) assurance from God that everything is going to be okay.

Hubby chose the church we would go to that very Sunday, saying that he had a good feeling about it. I must say that this is the friendliest church I’ve ever been to and after a couple of weeks there I’m feeling cautiously optimistic. I know, where’s my faith right? Lord???

As I sit on the screened porch this evening with the fragrance of Gardenias drifting across my yard, I’m aware of the many ways God works in our lives to encourage us. Sometimes it’s the little things, like the smell of flowers or hummingbirds at the feeder. Sometimes it’s through the people He sends our way.

I believe that these nudges of encouragement are God’s way of smiling upon us.

In my sadness I think I may have missed some of His smiles lately. Like I said, sometimes I get SO distracted.

I HEART y’all VERY much!

P.S. You know life can’t be too bad when one has so much silver to polish. 😉

A Cup of Coffee & a Heart-to-Heart

September 18, 2015 by Patti 29 Comments

Do you know what one of my favorite things is? I love meeting up with friends at a local coffee shop for a good heart-to-heart. On a Fall day, when the morning air is crisp, I prefer to sit in the big comfy chairs near the fireplace. I slip off my shoes and curl my legs up all comfy-like as I wrap both hands around my coffee mug and bring it up next to my face so I can feel the steam and inhale the rich, sweet aroma. Face-to-face we share what’s been happening in our lives, both our joys and our burdens, and when our time comes to an end I leave knowing that I am blessed to have such great friends.

Maybe you’ve noticed that I haven’t been here on the blog much lately. Maybe you’ve discerned from my last few posts that my heart has been a bit downcast.

It has been one year since we moved to South Carolina and I think it’s finally hit me that the way I once did life with old friends is not the way it will be now. Many old friends have drifted away and I don’t even see them much on Facebook anymore. That’s pretty natural I guess, for those that were more surface friends. For those that remain close we’ve found different ways of staying in touch, though it will never be as satisfying as face-to-face over coffee.

I hate to be a “Debbie Downer” (a big sorry to all you Debbies) but I want to be honest and real. Fall has always been the hardest season for me because of the Seattle gloom, but even living in sunnier South Carolina I find myself having a bit of a rough time. Sure, we’ve begun to create some great friendships here, with some really amazing people that God has brought into our lives, but since we’ve been traveling into the next city to attend church we haven’t really made friends in our own community. I haven’t found any girlfriends nearby that I can text and say, “Wanna meet for a cuppa’ Joe?”

As recently as last week I found myself driving down the road in tears asking God, “Where are my people?”

This sadness has made me lose much of my “zest” for blogging. Then there is the part of me that says, “Here I am, the Freedom Session lady, in a great big funk! Where is my freedom? What kind of example can I be?”

I KNOW that we aren’t to walk in self condemnation and I KNOW that I haven’t lost my freedom just because I feel sad. In fact, sadness is perfectly normal given all the changes we’ve made this past year (hubby’s job, moving far from friends and family, leaving behind a thriving ministry that we loved, losing our Snoopygirl, plus a few physical issues that have cropped up). But sadness isn’t where I want to stay and, as Mr. OTN says, staying stuck is not an option.

So today I want to share some NEW THINGS I’m doing to press forward into this new life of mine:

  • First, since Mr. OTN doesn’t like to see me sad he recently made the decision, and I quickly agreed, that we need to start searching for a church in our own city. At first that idea made me even sadder as I felt like we would be starting all over again, but it’s not like we are really starting over because we will continue to remain friends with those we’ve come to know. So we’ve been church hunting and will be trying out a new church close to home for awhile, to see if we are a good fit.
  • The second “new thing” is that I’ve begun writing for a new site called Faith ‘n Friends. This site is made up of several inspirational bloggers who will be coming together to share and encourage our readers. We will also be hosting a weekly link party on Fridays where you will have the chance to link up your own encouraging thoughts. I’ll be sure to keep you updated as to our start date in October.
  • A third “new thing” is that I am getting back into a regular exercise routine. For me, that is always a great mood booster. My broken wrist last Spring and the resulting nerve damage threw me, big time. The healing process has been very slow and being on the computer has been especially aggravating. I can now swim again without pain and have been able to do some modified Pilates exercises, so I am committing anew to becoming strong in body!
  • “New thing” number four is that I will be continuing to work on the book that I started writing (yeah, I probably never told you I had a book in me) and stepped away from due to lack of time and lack of confidence.
  • “New thing” number five, I (we) will continue to wait on the Lord and see what doors he opens for us to give back to others what we’ve so freely been given. It has been over a year since we were directing Freedom Session and both Mr. OTN and I feel that we are not at our best if we aren’t sharing our hope with others.
  • Number six, for the second year I will be attending the Allume blogger’s conference in October in hopes of getting answers to some questions I’ve been struggling with. Does my blog format need to change? Are there aspects of my blog that I need to step away from? Are there things I need to add? Even . . . should I just stop blogging altogether? I’m hoping to gain some clarity at the conference.

Thank you SO much for sitting down and listening to me today. I know that I am blessed to have great and encouraging readers like you and I hope you know how much I appreciate you. It’s your turn to share now, because even in the midst of my own stuff I care about what’s happening in your lives. What’s on your mind? What are your thoughts about MY thoughts? Have you experienced similar feelings? What kind of things are you going through now? Do you have any victories to share? Maybe we can even pray for one another!

We are all work in progress and the story is not finished yet!

Blessings sweet friends,

A French Flea Market Look With Homemade Paints

September 4, 2015 by Patti 11 Comments

What do you do to keep from going stir crazy when you’ve come down with a late summer cold that leaves you feeling just…plain…crummy? What do you do when the good doc says, “You need rest,” but resting leaves you restless? When my body is at rest my mind becomes busy with thoughts of all of the things that need to be done. Can anyone relate? So I’ve been doing my best to follow doctor’s orders, resting a lot and only doing “little” projects.

In playing around with paint this week I decided to give this sweet plaster angel an Old World look, like something you might find in a French Flea Market. I first learned this technique from Rosemary, who blogs at Villabarnes and is an amazing artist. It is a technique that is easily accomplished with a little paint and Gesso. Note: Gesso is a medium used to prepare painter’s canvas and can be found in art and craft stores.

This painting technique looks best on items with lots of nooks and crevices, such as frames, carved boxes, and figurines. Thrift stores have a wealth of items available or you might want to try it out on a decorative piece you already have at home.

I began by quickly painting my angel with dark grey paint. I wasn’t particularly careful about how I painted it and I left some areas more sparsely painted where I wanted the original gold to show through.

After the grey paint dried I slathered on some homemade Gesso. Yes, slathered. I wasn’t at all careful about full coverage.

Before the Gesso could dry I wiped back the whole piece with a paper towel, exposing the color beneath.

Finally, in certain areas that I wanted to highlight, I wiped even more of the Gesso away with the corner of a damp paper towel.

A little drying time and VOILA, a new creation! Old Things New or maybe New Things Old?

Here she sits on my dresser amidst my Vintage Lace Bottles, wearing a little vintage jewelry of her own.

I like the color contrast of this angel against all the creamy white.

Here you can see the areas where I didn’t quite cover the gold. I ended up sanding back even a bit more to allow more gold to show through.

I do believe this is the quickest and easiest DIY I’ve ever posted. I love simple projects like this don’t you?

I made my paint and Gesso with very little expense using recipes that I learned in the Farragoz Painting Course but you could use any chalk type paint and store bought Gesso to accomplish the same effect.

I’m off now to take a little rest before transforming another garage sale find! 😉

Blessings,
