The Ugliest Mirror in the World Makeover

May 28, 2016 by Patti 30 Comments

“Gold, pure gold.”  THOSE were the thoughts in the mind of the creator of this old mirror of mine.

The Ugliest Mirror Makeover 038aOkay, maybe not pure gold but still, I believe that in the beginning the creator of my thrift store mirror had every intention of making this mirror quite beautiful.  A mirror to be displayed and admired.

(Keep reading to hear a little secret about this mirror 😉

Eventually she was purchased and probably did have a stint at living life as the mirror she was created to be.  Then time passed and, as often happens, circumstances for this mirror didn’t turn out as expected.  Life happened.  Lots of life apparently as this mirror eventually became a lady most colorful.  And not in the best of ways. The Ugliest Mirror in the World 001I was so excited when I saw this mirror sitting on the Goodwill shelf with the $4.99 price tag that I added it to my cart in a heartbeat.  The checker though!  I could tell by the look on her face when I placed it on the checkstand that she was a bit surprised that anyone would dole out their hard earned money for such a hideous piece.

The Ugliest Mirror in the World 004A painted lady, gaudy in iridescent purple, blue, and green, hiding the gilded beauty of what she was originally created to be.  I get that.  I believe that we are all created with unique gifts and talents and the potential to be what God designed us to be.  Life circumstances can change us though, shut us down, make us fearful to pursue God’s intended path for our lives.

Homemade Milk PaintSome of us seem to push through to fulfill our dreams early on in life.  Others may need a lot of healing to get back on the right track (that’s me, a late bloomer).  Unfortunately some may never get there because they have no one in their lives to see through to the beauty beneath and walk with them toward their full potential.

Homemade Milk Paint 2I decided that I would not take this mirror back to her former glory because she wasn’t the same mirror.  She had many layers now and, though they were indeed gaudy, I didn’t want to hide them completely.

I began this project by toning down my colorful mirror with a few coats of homemade cassein paint that I learned to make in the online painting course Farragoz, The Art of Patina.  This simple-to-make paint creates great texture!

Crackle Medium To add even more depth I decided to give my mirror a crackled look by randomly dabbing wood glue over the cassein paint.

French LinenAfter that was nearly dry I painted the mirror using my Homemade Chalk Paint Recipe with latex paint that Home Depot custom matched to Annie Sloan Chalk Paint’s French Linen (taken from my ASCP color card).

French Linen 2You can see here how nicely the paint is cracking as it dries.

Old White WashA dry brushing of a lighter color Homemade Chalk Paint (a Home Depot match to Annie Sloan’s Old White) followed next.

Dust of Ages in Clear WaxLast of all I used a clear soft wax to seal the layers of paint, pressing Amy Howard’s Dust of Ages into the crevices while the wax was still somewhat tacky.  Have I told you how much fun this stuff is to work with?  It comes in a large 10 oz. jar which should pretty much last me forever.  For ordering info you can click on the picture below.

The Ugliest Mirror Makeover 018

The Ugliest Mirror Makeover 017Here you’ll see a little bit of the old color coming through because sometimes a little peek of where we’ve been can remind  us of how far we’ve come and make us grateful.

The Ugliest Mirror Makeover 015It’s hard to believe now that this was once an atrocious looking mirror, shunned and discarded at the Goodwill.

The Ugliest Mirror Makeover 003Maybe it takes one who has experienced the feeling of being shunned and discarded to see the beautiful potential in one like this.

Now for the little secret I told you I would reveal:  This mirror, underneath all of it’s Old World charm, is plastic!  Yes, PLASTIC.  Who would ever guess?

The Ugliest Mirror Makeover 015aFor more furniture painting ideas and techniques please check out my Pinterest board, and follow along if you like.  To enroll in an awesome online painting course where you’ll learn to make your own paints and be guided through the process of learning several different finishing techniques please check out the Farragoz link here (or on my sidebar).

“For You did form my inward parts; You did knit me together in my mother’s womb . . . My frame was not hidden from You when I was being formed in secret [and] intricately and curiously wrought [as if embroidered with various colors] in the depths of the earth [a region of darkness and mystery] . . . Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days [of my life] were written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them. How precious and weighty also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I could count them, they would be more in number than the sand. When I awoke, [could I count to the end] I would still be with You.”  Psalm 139:13-18 The Message Bible

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

And just in case you were wondering . . . it is never too late for God to redeem the wasted years of our lives.

You are loved so much!

4 Techniques for Refinishing Furniture to Look Vintage

May 26, 2016 by Patti 2 Comments

Hi sweet friends!  Today I’m happy to have Amy Spagnola doing guest posting to show you some simple tricks for making any piece of furniture look like a precious vintage piece. Welcome Amy!

Distress Success: 4 Clever Ways to Make New Furniture Look Aged

While many of the furniture projects on Old Things New focus on updating or repurposing existing furniture into something fresh and fabulous, there are times when people want to take something new and turn it into something old. Say WHAT?!?

Yep, that’s right, we’ve heard that there are some folks craving a vintage vibe to their recently purchased pieces; whether it’s a dresser, high chair or vanity, retro lovers want a flea market feel and we’re here to inspire!

Here are some refinishing technique ideas to turn that brand new piece into a classic antique:

Sandy Dandy  Luxedecor1

Take a modern dresser and give it a shabby chic facelift by sanding off the existing surface. By roughing up the top layer of newbie furniture, the surface will appear to be suffering from a super strength spa peel. A rough and crackling appearance offers the ultimate distressed signature. A stripped dresser can be left alone or additional paint, priming and sanding can convey a French cottage feel.

Hammer Time Luxedecor2For furniture that looks like it came from an Old West saloon, it’s best to scrape and smack. There’s no quicker way to achieve a rustic renaissance than with a lot of tools and some anger to boot. For achieving that timeworn look, using a hammer or a chain and lightly banging and beating will produce dings and nicks that will appear as though the furniture has lived a long life.

 Glaze for the Old Days

luxedecor3Found at most home improvement stores, tinted antiquing glaze can be used to take a new piece of furniture and give it an old school twinge. Whether it’s a medicine or china cabinet that gets the old overhaul, this technique is sure to take a modern furniture piece and give it a blast from the past.

Hard Knock Life

JC492992_zm

Less of a finishing technique and more of a DIY trick, using antique handles will add classic charm to any furniture piece. Victorian, French and Art Deco hardware designs all have a timeworn appearance. Adding vintage brass pulls and knobs to desks, dressers and doors will impart chic historic flair.

Guest Post By Amy Spagnola for LuxeDecor

I hope y’all have enjoyed learning a few new furniture ageing tricks today.  Hmmm . . . I have a piece of furniture on my porch that could do with a little roughing up . . .

Blessings 😉

DIY Outdoor Herb Shelf

May 22, 2016 by Patti 17 Comments

Sometimes in my wanderings I come across some amazing piece of junk that I decide I simply MUST have.  Hubby goes right along with, even encourages my obsession for this chippy, shabby stuff.

Outdoor Shelf a It’s not that he is overly fond of my purchases himself but he loves me and is therefore most willing to indulge my Old Things New habit.  Still . . . sometimes I can’t help but wonder if he isn’t compensating for the fact that his “stuff” is a whole lot more expensive than mine.  Things like electronic gadgets, fancy tools, more fishing poles, . . . boats.  Is it wrong of me to question his motives?  Shhh . . . we won’t tell him because we LIKE his generosity.  We kinda’ like the boat too.

Outdoor Shelf 001This weathered old corbel was one of those must-haves.  I didn’t have any idea how I’d use it or where, so it has been moving from room to room, inside and out, until this Spring when we started pulling our backyard deck area together and making it into a “French Courtyard.”  That’s when the idea bell went off in my head and an Outdoor Herb Shelf was born.

Outdoor Shelf 002After a couple coats of black outdoor spray paint to match my patio set they were just like new.

Outdoor Shelf 003Since our house is brick, hubby used special concrete screws to hang the corbels on.

Outdoor Shelf 002aWe added a piece of leftover plywood for the shelf . . .

Outdoor Shelf 004. . . and I painted the shelf with a medium grey colored paint . . .

Outdoor Shelf 003a. . . followed by a wash of a lighter grey for effect.  I don’t know what the effect is but it sounds good right?

Outdoor Shelf 002cI felt that the edge of the board could use some embellishment to make it “Frenchier” so I did an online search and found the Frank Morrow Company who sells decorative metal banding by the foot.

Outdoor Shelf 005After spray painting the banding to match the corbels I used some cut tacks to attach them to my board.

Outdoor Shelf 006I’m not sure what these tacks are meant to be used for but I found them in the garage and they were black so I thought they were perfect.  I suppose hubby has them for some other, more expensive, purpose.

Outdoor Shelf 007The metal banding was fairly easy to cut with metal snips and the angles were made by hand bending them over the edge of the board, then stepping on the bend to make a sharper edge.  With shoes of course.

Outdoor Shelf 016So here are several shots of my shelf.

Outdoor Shelf fI have a few fresh herbs displayed along with some other decorative, thrifted items.

Outdoor Shelf 017This super simple project can be done with thrift store corbels or new wooden corbels from any hardware store.

Quick and easy projects like this one make me happy and a happy wife makes a happy hubby.

What outdoor projects are you doing this Spring?

Blessings friends 😉

Overcome by Shiny Objects & a New Crystal Light Fixture

May 9, 2016 by Patti 8 Comments

Pinterest is not my friend.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Pinterest for all of the wonderful ideas I find there but the problem is that I find too many wonderful ideas!  As soon as I’ve pinned something into a category, another something shows up and I pin that, forgetting all about the first something I’ve pinned.  If that makes sense to you then you are just like me!

Crystal Bathroom Light Fixture 006

Having too many ideas coming at you, one after another, can cause you to lose focus on what you’re doing in pursuit of the next “shiny” thing.  There is a name for that:

Shiny Object Syndrome or S.O.S.!  Seriously!

This is a sponsored post and though I’ve received compensation, that compensation did not prevent me from giving a fair and honest review.

Crystal Bathroom Light Fixture 002Speaking of shiny objects, today I want to share with you the new light fixture we recently installed in our master bathroom and also give you a review of the company it came from.

Several months back I won a drawing for $60 off any light fixture from Parrot Uncle on my friend Sherry’s blog, No Minimalist Here.  I was so excited to win!  Looking through Parrot Uncle’s online catalog I found various types of Pendant Lighting, including Tiffany Pendant Lights,  beautiful Crystal Chandy’s, and so much more, all at really GREAT prices.  I quickly decided on the flush mount fixture you see here because . . . well, it sparkles.  A LOT.  When I went to place my order I was asked if I would be interested in doing a review of the company in exchange for a FREE light fixture!   You betcha’!

Crystal Bathroom Light Fixture 006Given the great price of the fixtures in the catalog I was somewhat skeptical about what the light fixture might look like or what the quality might be.  I even thought the crystals might be plastic.  So imagine my surprise when I unwrapped it and found dozens and dozens of beautiful crystals all sparkling at me at the same time, thus causing me to lose all sense of focus.

Crystal Bathroom Light Fixture 005In review, this is a beautiful transitional style light fixture.  It has a nice drum shade with a fuzzy black print on it and tons of  sparkle.  It takes four LED lightbulbs (not included) but as you can see from this picture, even when the lights are switched off the crystals pick up light from the bathroom window and show off a rainbow of color.

Crystal Bathroom Light Fixture 004The only thing I must say in review is that though there were pictures for how the crystals attach to one another (they came separate and carefully wrapped in bubble wrap to keep them from chipping) there weren’t instructions on how to hard wire the light fixture into the ceiling.  My hubby and I know how to do that so it wasn’t a problem but if you don’t know how it is wise to hire someone to do the job for you.

Your safety is very, very important to me!

Crystal Bathroom Light Fixture 002The shade fits flush to the ceiling and when the lights are turned on they glow brightly.

Crystal Bathroom Light Fixture 001The shade also casts a pretty pattern on my bathroom ceiling.

I am so pleased with the beauty of this fixture in my master bathroom, in spite of the fact that it makes me want to continue the updates.  Be sure to check out Parrot Uncle’s catalog of great fixtures, with free shipping and free returns.

Crystal Bathroom Light Fixture 003a

Now, I must get back to my Pinterest Bathroom Board to see what I might find next to add to this bright and shiny room.

Focus, focus, focus.

Blessings,

My Signature

Freedom Friday – Embarrassed by the Serenity Prayer

May 6, 2016 by Patti 8 Comments

When I was a little girl I used to love looking through my mom’s catalogs.  They weren’t like the catalogs I receive today, Pottery Barn, Ballards, or Front Gate.  Nothing that high end.  My favorite catalog was Lillian Vernon because it always had affordable trinkets that even an unemployed child of 10 could afford.

One Mother’s Day I found the perfect gift for my God-fearing mom.  I couldn’t have paid more than a few dollars for it because that would be more than I ever kept in my piggy bank.  I don’t even know how I ordered it but it must have been by putting cash in an envelope and mailing it off to the company.  Master Charge (now Master Card) hadn’t become a part of our family dynamic at that point in time.

God grant me the serenity

via Pinterest

Soon the little wooden plaque with the brass plate inscribed with these words arrived in the mail.  I wrapped it for mom and proudly presented it to her on Mother’s Day.

She was so pleased that I would order a gift for her.  She beamed and hugged and kissed me, and then she said, “Did you know that this is the alcoholics prayer?”

What?  I barely even knew what an alcoholic was except that I knew we had some in the family and it wasn’t a good thing.

Though my mom meant no harm I was so embarrassed to have made such a stupid mistake.

Now, on the other side of middle on this birth-to-old age timeline I look at this prayer not as the “alcoholics prayer” but as a prayer that is valuable for anyone facing difficult circumstances.

Serenity to accept the unchangeable - Peace in knowing God is sovereign. Click To Tweet

Courage to change what's changeable - Boldness to step by faith into what God calls me to. Click To Tweet

Wisdom to know the difference - Discerning when I should move and when I should be still. Click To Tweet

Feeling grateful for an awesome God who has used the “alcoholics prayer” to change my life.

Blessings,
