Comparison, Amazing Hair Days, and New Dishes

July 31, 2016 by Patti 30 Comments

Ducal Florentine Dishes 024I’m sure you don’t do this but sometimes I compare myself to others.  I look at other writers, or speakers, or beautiful singers of song, or super athletic Spartan racers, and I think about how amazing they are.

Ducal Florentine Dishes 017From time to time I’ve even been heard to say, “I want to write, or speak, or sing, or be a crazy mud runner just like her!”  Well, to be honest, maybe not the mud runner part even though I do admire my friends who do that!

Ducal Florentine Dishes 016In fact, that’s just the way the conversation went today with my friend Debbie, who is here visiting from Washington State.  Debbie laughed out loud as I read her a blog post written by Karianne of Thistlewood Farms, in which she shared about her amazing hair day.

Ducal Florentine Dishes 006Kari is incredibly funny and she truly does have amazing hair, and pretty red lipstick, and she writes blog posts delectable enough to save and savor over a cup of coffee.

Karianne

This is an IG picture of me with Karianne at the Allume conference last Fall where I somewhat accosted her in my excitement over seeing her in person.

Debbie (also one to be admired at www.debbiekitterman.com), quickly reminded me of the message at the She Speaks conference we attended last weekend.  Comparing ourselves to others will only rob us of our joy.  Speaker Shauna Niequist taught us that not only shouldn’t we try to be like others but that the most beautiful thing about each of us should be the person we are behind closed doors.  Ouch!

Ducal Florentine Dishes 015Shauna also exhorted us with these words, “Don’t be the next anybody!”  In other words, don’t strive to be that person you look up to and admire.  Be yourself.

Ducal Florentine Dishes 003God has given each of us unique gifts and callings, and when we are walking out God’s plan for our lives we are NOT each other’s competition.  The enemy of our souls is our competition.

Ducal Florentine Dishes 004Other “sticky statements” I came away with from the She Speaks conference were, “Don’t let the enemy tell you that you aren’t called or that you aren’t worthy,” – Micca Campbell.

Ducal Florentine Dishes 011“You cannot miss your season of ministry,” and “Your ‘Yes’ [to God] today unleashes God’s ‘Yes’ [to you] tomorrow.” – Whitney Capps.  In other words, be obedient to the thing God asks you to do today and don’t try to make things happen outside of God’s timing.

Ducal Florentine Dishes 021In one of the main sessions speaker Suzie Eller spoke to us and gave us this question to ask ourselves, “Is my need to be known greater than the need before me?”  Wow, right?  Because if I am truly serving God it is never about me.

Ducal Florentine Dishes 007I love learning and writing and sharing the things I learn.   I love sharing God’s story, and my story, all wrapped up together.  Inner happiness comes from knowing that He has chosen me and that He has given me a plan and purpose that is for me alone.

Ducal Florentine Dishes 008 Y’all have your own plans too because God says to those who serve Him, “I know the plans I have for you . . . plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jer. 29:11 NIV

Ducal Florentine Dishes 008Isn’t it great that we can thoroughly enjoy other gifted women and know that they are not a threat to what God has called us to do?  There is always more power in teamwork than in going solo.

I hope y’all will take a minute to read Karianne’s POST and hear her amazing hair day story because, in her own words, “Us rock stars have to stick together.”

Ducal Florentine Dishes 001Just in case you were wondering, Debbie and I got to do a bit of antiquing while she was here with me this week and I got a killer deal on this beautiful set of antique dishes.  I thought all this talk of amazing was the perfect place to throw them in.

Love, hugs, and gigantic blessings to you girlfriends,

DIY Mini Garden Conservatory

July 14, 2016 by Patti 82 Comments

“What is that thing out in the woods?,” my brother-in-law asked quizzically.  When I explained to him that it was a mini conservatory made of old windows I could tell by the look on his face that he was thinking, “Ohhh-KAY!”

Y’ALL!  Not everyone gets us, we diggers in old trash.  I know y’all are with me on this.  Why else would you read a blog like mine?  The thrill-of-the-hunt-to-find-the-perfect-parts-that-will-come-together-into-one-grand-creation-of-our-own-making.

SIGH . . . Life is GOOD!

Mini conservatory after 021Quite awhile back I did a post showing pictures of garden houses (LINK HERE) and shared my dream of having one of my own.  Back then there wasn’t a single place in our yard to add such a dream.  HOWEVER, now that we are in a house with a larger yard and much of it natural woods, I found myself dreaming once again.

Dreaming and searching online for Mini Garden Conservatories.  I found several on Pinterest which you can check out on my Garden Houses Board.

The following is a simple tutorial showing how Mr. OTN and I put our own Mini Conservatory together:

Old windowsWe began with six windows found on Craigslist.  Four for each of the sides and two to make the peak of the roof.

Mini Conservatory 001Mr. OTN jumped right into the project (I think he enjoyed the fame of being written about in my Recaning a Vintage Chair post) and used a drill and screwdriver to attach L-brackets to three corners of the structure.

Mini Conservatory 002

Mini Conservatory 003Next was the peak of the roof.

Mini Conservatory 004We knew we wanted a flat section on the top for attaching decorative trims so he screwed a 2×4 down into the edges of the top and added brackets on both ends to stabilize the roof.

Mini Conservatory 005

The bottom edges of the roof windows fit down perfectly into the tops of the base windows so all Mr. OTN had to do was add screws to secure them.  The door was added next and Mr. OTN shaved off a bit of the top corners with his mitre saw so the door wood swing smoothly under the roof.

Mini Conservatory 006We used old hardware that came with the windows as a door latch.

Mini Conservatory 009I wanted a tin strip over the top of the roof and after measuring I used metal snippers to cut the trim from a piece of dryer vent.

Mini Conservatory 010You can see here that I took my hammer to it to make it look like hammered metal.  This was just the beginning.  By the time I got through with my hammer and a metal chain it looked really grand!

Mini Conservatory 012I decided to cut a piece of wood to cover the end brackets and give my house a more finished look.  This is the template I created for the wood before cutting it with the table saw.  Yes, I get to use the dangerous tools!

Mini Conservatory 013 I could hardly wait until it was all put together to begin painting.  NOTE:  It was a waste of time to tape everything before painting.  I have a pretty steady hand and I found that I could paint and wipe away excess much faster than I could tape.  Besides, this is an outdoor project so who really cares if the paint is a little sloppy?  Live and learn.Mini conservatory after 023The best part was trimming out my creation.  I had leftover metal trim from my Outdoor Herb Shelf project.

Mini conservatory after 022I found an inexpensive cross at Hobby Lobby and added some plastic crystals for a little sun catching bling.

Mini conservatory after 025I found an old trivet at Habitat for Humanity and since it was dark like the trim I rubbed a little gold paint over it to make it stand out.

Mini Conservatory After 01I’ve had this crystal doorknob in my spare parts box for awhile now so I was delighted to be able to use it on this project.  The well patina’d doorknob plate was a cheap brass one that I also found in my spare parts box and aged with salt and vinegar.  Poifect!

Mini conservatory after 012The decorative accent on top is two plant hooks screwed down into the wood and metal.

Mini conservatory after 008I wanted to elevate my Mini Conservatory so was extremely happy to find an old coffee table at Goodwill that I painted with the same outdoor paint that I used on the windows.   Aren’t the legs good looking?

Mini conservatory after 027Finally I was able to add a bit of color with beautiful plants.

Mini conservatory after 024This little boy and his dog were sitting in the woods behind our house so I gave him a new place to observe the garden.

Mini conservatory after 002The broken pedestal piece was also out in the woods and it now serves as a stand for my plants.

Mini conservatory after 035I like adding a little interest to the woods behind my house . . .

Mini conservatory after 017. . . and the view from my screened porch makes me smile.  Silly old lady that I am.

Blessings friends,

Freedom Friday – Dealing With the Hurt of Personal Attacks

July 1, 2016 by Patti 13 Comments

Have you ever been at the receiving end of a personal attack so brutal that it wounded you to the core.  I have.  Attacks by someone we don’t really know may be easily brushed off (unless you are super sensitive, which I can sometimes be) but when we are attacked by those we are closest to the pain is real, and it hurts.

Myrtle Beach Sky 1

How do we respond to the hurt?

Welcome to FREEDOM FRIDAY – A devotional, emotional, spiritual and sometimes hysterical series that I will be sharing on occasional Fridays, in addition to my regular Old Things New posts. Why?  Because though once bound in chains Christ has set me free –  FREE to live, to love, to dance, to sing, to be who God created me to be!

When someone lashes out it may be that there is an element of truth to what was said or there may be no truth in it at all.  No matter what it still hurts and it’s easy to take up an offense against the person who hurt us.

Myrtle Beach sky 2

*Maybe that hurt is manifested in anger, “Well FINE, if that’s the way you want to be, I’m done!”

*Maybe your response is to flee and to isolate, pretending it never even happened.

*Maybe the hurt manifests in deep pain, even fear of loss so that you crumble, taking all of the responsibility upon yourself and scrambling to make things right.

For most of us it is very tempting to hold an offense against the person who hurt us, running the words over and over in our heads, giving them new meaning, maybe even beginning to believe untruths said about us and beating ourselves up, rather than remembering and dwelling on who we are in Christ (For a link to Scriptures telling who you are in Christ click HERE).

This is just plain wrong.

Tybee Island Beach 2

Good sense makes one slow to anger,
and it is his glory to overlook an offense. Prov 19:11 ESV

Did you know that when you become offended, and allow that offense control you, you have stopped serving God? Click To Tweet

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Eph. 4:31-32 ESV

When we become bitter all the fruits of the Spirit that God has placed in the Christ follower, love, joy, peace, patience, etc. are replaced by all of the emotions allowed to supplant them, hatred, unhappiness, agitation, self -pity and the like.  Quickly then, it becomes

All.  About.  Me.

Tybee Island 2

Following Christ is all about dying to our selfish desires and living for Him, loving God and loving others as ourselves.  So maybe we shouldn’t be overthinking and brooding over the injustices against us but instead asking God what is going on inside the other person that would cause them act in such a way.  What has hurt them so deeply that they would choose to lash out?  Where is God in their life?  What deep pain needs healing?  How can we pray for them?

Think of when Peter betrayed Jesus.  Jesus was hurt sure, but His hurt was for Peter not Himself.

Don’t allow hurt to cause you to take up an offense and reproduce the same bad fruit in you as the other person has exhibited toward you.  Don’t let hurtful words pull you in the wrong direction, away from God instead of toward Him.  Don’t let what you do with the hurt lead you into rebellion against God.

Ask yourself what thoughts you are having toward the one who offended you.  Are they true?  Are they honorable? Are they right, pure, and lovely?  Can you continue to hold onto the thoughts you are having and be obedient to Christ?

Forgive, forgive, and forgive, and when the feelings of the initial hurt resurface forgive again. Click To Tweet

At the beach

I know this is hard.   Believe me friends, I don’t write anything that I haven’t experienced myself.   The core of our pain can become, in God’s hands, the core of our purpose.

Remember that anything others do to you is nothing compared to what Jesus did for you. Click To Tweet
