Freedom Friday – On Forgiving God

October 30, 2015 by Patti 14 Comments

Have you forgiven God?

Perhaps this question seems ridiculous to you, or even offensive. Holiness is an attribute of God, a part of who He is, so by virtue of who God is He is incapable of sin.  If God is incapable of sin why would we need to forgive Him?

The Pretty Place 014

Welcome to FREEDOM FRIDAY – A devotional, emotional, spiritual and sometimes hysterical series that I will be sharing on occasional Fridays, in addition to my regular Old Things New posts. Why?  Because though once bound in chains Christ has set me free –  FREE to live, to love, to dance, to sing, to be who God created me to be!

The past two Freedom Friday posts have been  all about forgiveness, Forgiving Yourself and Forgiving Others (and they are really good so you might want to go back and read them!).  At the end of my post on forgiving others I led you through a prayer of forgiveness and afterwards asked the question, “Was God’s name on your list of those to forgive?”  That question leads to today’s post.

The Pretty Place 007

We all have hopes and dreams don’t we?  We also all experience disappointments when our hopes and dreams aren’t fulfilled, leading us to question God.

“Why have you allowed this tragedy to come into my life?”

“Why did you allow my marriage to be broken apart by another person?”

“Why must I live with this constant pain?”

“Why did you allow the lie to be believed that turned my best friend against me?”

“Why have you allowed evil people to succeed when I try to do good and only see failure?”

“Why did you take my child’s life?”

“Why can’t I be beautiful, thin, rich, popular . . . ?”

“Why did you allow that person steal my innocence when I was just a child?”

“Why don’t you answer my prayers?”

The Psalms are filled with laments toward God!

The Pretty Place 005

There have been times in my life where I’ve prayed with all my heart to escape a hard situation and no escape came, or when I prayed for something that I thought was good and was met with only obstacles, or when I prayed for God to give me an answer and all I heard was silence.  At times in my life I’ve been angry and wrestled with God over things that I felt weren’t “fair.”  I’ve also been through times of great hurt where I felt abandoned and questioned God’s love for me.

The Pretty Place 020

Many of my unfulfilled expectations were things I felt God should have done for me or that He should have prevented from happening to me, (you can read a whole post about expectations HERE) but God never sets out to hurt us or cause us harm.  He is perfect in all His ways (Psalm 18:30).  He can always be trusted to do what’s best for those who follow Him (Rom. 8:28) even when it seems to us to be all wrong!

When I hold a resentment against God it hurts me! Click To Tweet

Bitterness and unforgiveness hold me in bondage.  They steal my joy and keep me from moving forward in all of the fullness that God has for me.

The Pretty Place 022

So technically NO, God does not need our forgiveness.  He is sinless and He never does anything to harm us.  In truth, when we are angry with God we’ve placed our own expectations on Him rather than letting God be God and:

If I'm not letting God BE God I'm not really trusting Him. Click To Tweet

So maybe what’s really needed is for us to ask Him to forgive us for our attitudes of resentment toward Him and for placing our human expectations on the one who knows it all (Job 37:15-16; Dan. 2:22)!

The Pretty Place 027

In Job 40:8 (The Voice), after Job has done much questioning of God, God answers, “Would you go so far as to question my judgment?  Would you imagine Me guilty merely in order to justify yourself?”

The Pretty Place 028

It is okay to be authentic and honest with God about how we feel.  He understands our disappointments. To really grasp God’s sovereignty I had to come to a point in my life where I was stricken with fear over a situation that I had no control over.  All I could do was choose to really believe that God was in control.  It is such a release to trust Him and believe that He has my best interests at heart instead of trying to manipulate things to my own advantage.

The Pretty Place 033

So again, no, God doesn’t need your forgiveness.  He loves you and desires a full and unhindered relationship with you. Letting go of bitterness, accepting God’s perfect plan for your life, and allowing His peace to flow into those places where you’ve once held resentment will set you free!

The Pretty Place 037

PRAYER:  Papa God, please reveal those areas of my life where I’ve held resentment or anger against my circumstances, but really against You.  I know that as your child you only desire what is good for me but sometimes Your best doesn’t make sense to me.  I know that you are good and trustworthy, even when life is falling apart.  You are righteous in all your ways.  I’m sorry for the resentments I’ve held against you and though YOU don’t need forgiveness I forgive you for not doing it my way!  I may even be a little bit relieved that you didn’t do it my way!  Today I am letting go of the wrong thinking I’ve embraced and trusting You with every area of my life.  In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

God’s best to you my dear readers,

Southern Etiquette & How to Make Your Neighbors Jealous of Your Front Porch

October 28, 2015 by Patti 28 Comments

Fall Porch 2015 003

If you’ve been around this blog for any time at all now you know that I like to have a little fun.  So today I thought I’d share with y’all (I love saying that) some of the things I’ve learned about Southern Etiquette from one of my real life Southern blogging buddies Leslie, at Bungalow Nesting.  Leslie is one of the first people I met here in the upstate of South Carolina and she is one of the most delightful gals I know!  Her fun attitude is contagious and she has become a dear, dear friend.

Fall Porch 2015 021

When I first met Leslie she began right away to fill me in on proper Southern etiquette.  Since I’ve never lived in the South before I take these tips quite seriously and I’m sure that the following list of social etiquette will be KEY to making my way in this strange new land.

Fall Porch 2015 011

  • The first time Leslie and her husband Mark invited us to their home she told me that when you are invited to a Southerner’s home you always bring a gift.  I listened and I brought along a nice loaf of sweet bread.  She graciously thanked me and said that each subsequent time you are invited into someone’s home the gift must be bigger and better.  I can believe THAT!  They have a lot of company and they have a lot of nice things.

Fall Porch 2015 007

  • Southern greetings are very friendly. Always smile and remember that a smile is not only on the face but can be seen in the eyes. If your eyes aren’t smiling the other person will know you aren’t a friendly person.

Fall Porch 2015 029

  • Men usually shake hands, women embrace (except for church, church men embrace like women).  A woman-to-woman embrace often includes a kiss on the cheek.  Only woman-to-woman though.  Doncha’ dare kiss another woman’s husband!

Fall Porch 2015 028

  • When engaging in conversation it is proper to maintain eye contact.  Don’t stare too long though because that can be threatening . . . and don’t let your gaze constantly wander because that shows that you aren’t listening.  If you are bored listen for awhile and then find something you must suddenly attend to.

Fall Porch 2015 014

  • Speaking of eye contact, don’t gawk! This is especially true for men who should only gawk at their own wives.

Fall Porch 2015 018

  • Don’t stand too close when conversing with another person.  This can cause the other person to feel uncomfortable, not to mention the fact that you might have offensive breath or even risk “spraying” them.

Fall Porch 2015 016

  • Be careful what you say while conversing.  Remember, the heart of who you are comes out of your MOUTH.  If you want to be nice your words must be nice and that is the goal of every Southerner.  Being nice!

Fall Porch 2015 017

  • When being introduced to another person always smile and say something pleasant like, “It is good to meet you.”  Once you know them you can greet them with, “Hey.”  Or, “Hey, hey,” if you are a Finnish Southerner.

Fall Porch 2015 025

  • When someone offends you or says something you don’t like never argue or get nasty.  Simply say, “Bless your heart.”  Say it with a smile too because the good book says that showing kindness to those you don’t like is just like heaping burning coals upon their head!

Fall Porch 2015 031

  • Never show up at someone’s house unexpectedly.  A Southern woman will feel the need to invite you in and will be embarrassed if there is any little thing out of place.

Fall Porch 2015 028

  • Never show up to a party early.  In fact, don’t show up on time!  At least 30 minutes after the party is set to begin is the real start time of any party in the South.

Fall Porch 2015 024

  • Always return the favor. Whether it is an invite, a gift, a card, a kind word, always return the favor . . . if you want to continue the friendship. If you don’t want to continue the friendship don’t return the favor.

Fall Porch 2015 030

  • Be Words: Be humble. Be Courteous. Be friendly. Be modest. Behave.
  • Courtesy Words: “Please,” “May I,” “Thank You,” “You’re Welcome,” “Excuse Me,” “Pardon Me,” “Yes sir,”  “No sir,” “Yes ma’am,” “No ma’am.”
  • Southern Cuss Words: Ding dangit; Heavens to Betsy; Dag nabbit; Lard bucket; What in the Sam Hill; Oh my land; Yankee; Shoot a monkey; Jumpin Jehosaphat!  These words are acceptable outbursts in place of  “real” swear words, except in church.  No cuss words in church!

Fall Porch 2015 001

Now in case you’re wondering at the title, How to Make Your Neighbors Jealous of Your Front Porch, it should be pretty obvious by now that you should never deliberately make your neighbors jealous of your front porch or any other part of your life.  If they happen to become a little green with envy over your modest porch decor simply invite them in for a glass of sweet tea and all peace will be restored.

Fall Porch 2015 032

I hope you’ve enjoyed these rules of Southern etiquette in social situations.  There are of course rules for every situation, church etiquette; shopping etiquette; porch etiquette; bathroom etiquette; etc.  Too many to touch on them all in one post!   Know this:  If you follow these rules your popularity will be sure to increase . . . because people like people with good manners. 😉

What We Wore – Allume

October 26, 2015 by Patti 25 Comments

My eyes scanned the lines of well attired bloggers making their way down either side of the long buffet table.  Writers, artists, photographers, seekers of beauty and lovers of God.  Outside adornment reflecting inward creativity with cute leopard shoes, chunky jeweled necklaces, lace trimmed sweaters, and red lipstick!

A chuckle of amusement began to arise within me as I thought of what “real life” might look like for some of these bloggers.  If they are like me (but they probably aren’t because Allume bloggers are so darned cute) a day of blogging might look like unkempt hair, old mascara under the eyes, ragged fingernails, and unflattering pajama pants.

Deb & Patti Blogging2

Like my friend Debbie and myself last summer on a day when my husband came home from work to find us still in our pajamas!

The Allume Conference last weekend was inspiring!  It gave me new direction and much needed encouragement to press on in this writing life of mine.  It was also a lot of fun to meet some of the women I’ve been getting to know online this past year through The Consilium, a group for writers/bloggers over the age of 45.

What We Wore - Consilium 054

This post is dedicated to my Consilium sisters who, even though we are a bit more seasoned than most of the bloggers at the conference, really know how to rock it when it comes to dressing ourselves up.  The following are some pictures I took at our meet up in the lobby.

Moving From Fear to Faith

October 15, 2015 by Patti 4 Comments

I am so excited I’m beside myself!  My clothes are laid out, my houseguests have arrived, and we are set to have an amazing time this weekend at the Allume Conference for writers and bloggers!  In fact, I’m so excited that I almost forgot to share with you about the post I’ve written for Faith ‘n Friends.

Smokey Mountain Parkway 079

I mentioned in an earlier post that I am now a contributing writer on a new website called Faith ‘n Friends and today my first post was published.

The post I’ve written offers tips for moving from Fear to Faith and you can link up to read it right HERE

I would be eternally grateful, absolutely adore you, and love you forever if you would go over and take a peek.  It would be even better if you would leave a comment on the site so Deb, the site admin, won’t fire me!

Headed off to bed now so I can be rested and refreshed for the conference tomorrow!

Blessings to you,

A Cozy Den & Being Content

October 11, 2015 by Patti 16 Comments

As I sit here on this dark, damp, Saturday night I’m thinking to myself that this isn’t the place I’d rather be.

Fall in the Den 001

After a day of running errands in the pelting rain and puddle hopping to no avail, I sit now in my favorite chair in the den, bare feet resting on a worn leather footstool, shoes set out to dry.

Fall decor indoors 156

Writing spontaneously tonight I have no lofty ideas, nor great accomplishments to share, other than finding a cute coral-colored, gold-lined raincoat to bring a splash of color to a grey day.  Thank you Mr. OTN for being my shopping buddy today 😉

Fall in the Den 005

The flames in the fireplace chatter and the warmth reaches out to touch the sides of my legs.  I hear the ticking of a distant clock and the clink of ice cubes as Mr. OTN raises his glass to drink from the iced coffee I made for him this evening.  We take care of one another, hubby and I 🙂

Dogs 003

He is sprawled out on the couch, reading. Big dog Sasha is in her usual place at his feet, half hidden by the beaten up old trunk that serves as our coffee table.  Little dog Cozy wanders restlessly in and out of the room a few times (always missing her mama) before finally settling down at my feet.

Fall in the Den 010

Being with my hubby and the pups brings me great happiness.  This new(ish) home isn’t as busy as our lake house was, or as noisy as the house our children grew up in, but it is still filled with life.  This last week we had out-of-town company, old friends and new, and they were just the beginning of a month of visitors yet to come.

Fall decor indoors 074

But tonight our home is still and we are at peace in our togetherness.

Fall in the Den 008

Our den is like a cocoon with warm caramel colored walls to surround us and a plush oriental rug in rich creams, browns, reds, and greens beneath our feet.  The oversized leather couch (large enough for two to nap, one on each end) is filled with plump pillows.  Tables, lamps, and comfy side chairs make this room a favorite place for good conversation.
Fall in the Den 020

Items old and new adorn the twin bookcases flanking the doorway to the living room behind me.  Treasures saved from both our childhoods and collected on our travels together.

Fall in the Den 014

The mantle is topped with an antique mirror from our old house on the lake.  It was the first piece we bought for that house and it’s also a perfect fit right here.  Simple Fall decor adorns either side of the mirror and rustic old corbels rest on the hearth.

Fall in the Den 011

Baskets on the floor hold reading materials and cozy blankets, and there are large floor pillows for pulling up in front of the fire.  The den is our most used room during Fall and Winter.

Fall in the Den 009

It’s peaceful here tonight.  Darkness encloses our home in the trees.  The rain has slowed to a drizzle.  I feel safe, warm, and dry.  I also feel loved.  Loved by my hubby, the pups, and loved by God.

Fall in the Den 003

So where would I rather be on this drizzly Saturday night?  When I began to write this evening I thought that I’d rather be in a tropical place, walking barefoot beside the sea on a clear and starry night, warm breezes blowing around all me.  But I’ve changed my mind.  After all of this reflection I realize that there is no better place to be than right where I am!

Fall in the Den 023

Wherever you are as you read this I hope you’ll take time to realize the beauty of living in the now before it slips away.

In all circumstances

Blessings,
