Freedom Friday – On Feeling Lonely

September 28, 2014 by Patti 13 Comments

I knew it would come to this.  No one had to tell me that I would feel this way.  I anticipated it long before our move . . . the missing of and longing for the familiar.

06-Autumn Porch 042-001 (640x427)

I also knew that when we first got here, to beautiful South Carolina, this new home far away from home, I would be excited to be here.  I still am.

I expected that I would find joy in setting up our new home and figuring out what piece of furniture would go here . . . or what piece of artwork would go there.  I still do.

I also anticipated that when Mr. OTN started working his new job . . . a very demanding job . . . a twelve PLUS hours per day job . . .

I would feel a little lonely . . .

And every once in awhile it sneaks up on me, that overwhelming feeling of sorrow over all that I’ve left behind.

02-Autumn Porch 016-001 (325x640)

FREEDOM FRIDAY.  That is the name of a new devotional, emotional, spiritual and maybe sometimes even hysterical series that I’ll be adding to my blog.  It may not be every Friday and it may not be for everyone who follows Old Things New.  I’ll still be posting “how to’s” as I create beauty out of old things and plug away at decorating our new home.  The truth is that Old Things New has never been just about finding old things and making them pretty.  At the core of my desire to create beauty out of brokenness is my own story of a life made new.  That is the why of Freedom Friday.

04-Autumn Porch 031-001 (427x640)

So back to this roller coaster of emotions I’ve been experiencing, having recently moved across the country from Washington State, where I’ve lived my entire life (a LONG time)!

In the month we’ve been here it has been fun shopping, exploring, decorating and setting up my new home.  My head is swimming with ideas . . . so many that I’m good for posts for a long time to come.

What has been hard is when I find myself alone for hours on end.  I miss my friends.  Oh yes, I still talk to some of them on the phone, or text or Facebook message with them and that is good.  It is the knowing that I won’t see them at church on Saturday night or that we don’t have a shopping date on the calendar to look forward to . . . where we will laugh, and share the hard things, and laugh, and go to  pretty stores, and laugh, and eat chocolate and then laugh a little more before going back to our “real” lives (can you tell that I love to laugh?  LOVE!).  It is the knowing that a coffee date is no longer just a phone call away.

03-Autumn Porch 025-001 (427x640)

I also miss the comfort of familiar surroundings.  MY grocery store, the one I knew backwards and forwards, my favorite places to have coffee, the antique stores and junk stores that I frequented, Mount Rainier peeking through the clouds just to remind me that it was really there, the shy Blue Heron who would make an occasional appearance on my dock and remind me that I too could soar, my church . . . OH how I miss my church.

Am I making you sad?  I don’t mean to.  My hope for this post is that it will speak to one or two others who sometimes feel alone and lonely.

01-Autumn Porch 009-001 (427x640)

We’ve made this move for a reason.  We have no doubt about that.  We know that God’s purposes are higher than just a change of job and scenery.  After directing Freedom Session for four years back in Olympia we are hopeful that God will bring us to a place where we can do that again . . . if that is His plan for us.  Until then, we feel like we are supposed to be having a time of rest and refreshing.  Mr. OTN likens our rest to being in a cocoon . . . safe, nourished, and comfortable.  So we’ve been visiting churches . . . trying to find a “home” but it is really hard to feel at home where no one knows you.  Can you imagine going home for Thanksgiving and walking into a dining room filled with strangers?  Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been reflecting on the importance of knowing and being known.

11-Sunny Autumn Porch 006 (427x640)

In my “aloneness” on Sunday mornings as I sit in  yet another new church (and yes, you CAN feel alone even in the midst of hundreds . . . even thousands . . . of other church goers) I’ve found myself drifting back into some of my old ways of thinking, remembering old lies that said things like, “You’re not enough.  You’re flawed.  You have a past.  You aren’t perfect. You are not one of the ‘beautiful’ Christians.”  Though I was once held in bondage by these lies I quickly recognize that I am being attacked once again in the place where I am most vulnerable.  But there ARE an awful lot of beautiful Christians in SC!

12-Sunny Autumn Porch 011 (501x640)

In Freedom Session we teach a section on how to hear God speak personally to you through the reading of His Word, the Bible.  We teach people to read a passage, mark the areas that stand out to them and then ask God what He wants to say (and yes, it IS okay to ask God to speak to you!).  In my daily quiet time, as I’ve been reflecting  and reading the Bible, it feels like God has been telling me that He wants me to draw closer to him and depend upon him more than I ever have before.  He wants me to know and be known by Him.  WOW!

09-Autumn Porch 059-001 (427x640)

Here is a portion of Scripture that stood out to me this week and how God spoke to me personally through it.  NOTE:  This is neither a study of nor commentary on Psalm 23.  It is simply how it applied to me and my life.

Psalm 23:1-5
(The Voice version)

”The Eternal One is my Shepherd, He cares for me always.
He provides me rest in rich, green fields
besides streams of refreshing water.
He soothes my fears;
He makes me whole again,
steering me off worn, hard paths to roads where truth and righteousness echo His name.
Even in the unending shadow of death’s darkness,
I am not overcome by fear.
Because You are with me in those dark moments,
near with Your protection and guidance,
 I am comforted.
You spread out a table for me,
provisions in the midst of attack from my enemies;
You care for all my needs. anointing my head with soothing, fragrant oil,
filling my cup again and again with Your grace.
Certainly Your faithful protection and loving provision will pursue me,
where I go, always, everywhere.
I will always be with the Eternal One,
 in Your house forever.”

The highlighted verses are those that spoke to me most clearly.  I asked God what He wanted to say to me and then this is what I wrote down in my journal:
“God – You have made me whole!  When my thoughts go back to old ways of thinking I need to remember that and focus on what is true.  I must remember who I am in You!  In the midst of the attacks on my mind you provide a veritable feast.  You supply me with everything I need to remain grounded in You.  I am nourished and strengthened by your word.”
 15-Sunny Autumn Porch 005 (640x427) (640x427)
What about you?  Do you ever find yourself in a vulnerable place where the whispers of defeat begin to play over and over in your head?  We all have our own particular areas of weakness, usually based on things we’ve experienced long ago. As our Pastor Peter once said those whispers of defeat will “suck the life right out of you!”
If this is true for you right now then maybe it is time to stop focusing on the challenges you are be facing and meditate on God and His promises to you.  Maybe you are reading this and you don’t even know or believe in God.  My challenge to you is to ask Him to reveal Himself to you and then wait . . . and watch . . . to see what happens.
07-Autumn Porch 053-001 (640x427)
God says if we look for Him intently we will find Him. Jer. 29:13
God says that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. James 4:8
God says that He will satisfy all our needs according to his riches in glory in Christ. Phil. 4:19
PRAYER:
Father God, through Jesus Christ you have given me access to ALL of Your abundance.  Show me how to wait for You, how to listen for your voice, how to abide in You, to feast on your Word and draw  strength from You, and You alone.  Teach me how to delight fully in You as I walk into the purpose you have for me . . . even if I don’t know what that is yet.  Finally, please bring me to the point of being able to say with all honesty,
“If it is nothing but me and You God it is okay.  You are enough and Your love never fails.”

Blessings,

A Grand Fall Porch!

September 22, 2014 by Patti 19 Comments

01-Fall Porch 2014 001The front porch of my new house feels . . . so . . . well . . . GRAND!  At least to me.  As I took a walk through my new neighborhood this past week I was itching to go back to my house and grab my camera to shoot some pictures.  That might not be the thing to do if I want to endear myself to my new neighbors though.  Every home is beautiful and I saw so many gorgeous wreaths and inviting porches.  It is evident that my new neighbors care about appearances.

If you saw my last post, a Farewell to Our Lake House, you’ll see that my old neighbors cared too . . . in a different . . . sometimes “funny” way.

37-Pattison Lake Homes 138Case in point . . . multi-colored Flamingos!

15-Fall Porch 2014 019This is a very different type of neighborhood.  Very classy.  Very sophisticated.  I feel like The Jeffersons . . . “Movin’ on up, to the Eastside . . .”

Will I measure up?  Does my style need to change to match my new neighborhood, my new house?  For a peek back at my lake house’s Fall porch decor you can click HERE , where you’ll see the simple country style that fit that house so well.

05-Fall Porch 2014 007My new house is a lot more formal with it’s brick stairway  and columned portico (I’ve never had a portico before).  It is a style that demands a little different approach to decorating for sure.

So I pulled a few things out of my Thanksgiving bin and headed down to Greenville’s Farmer’s Market this weekend to pick up a few extras.

16-Fall Porch 2014 021The first thing that caught my eye was this great wreath made of bittersweet berries.  It matches perfectly the swag I had from last year.  Does anyone know a method of preserving bittersweet?

02-Fall Porch 2014 003I also picked up some great gourds and pumpkins . . .

06-Fall Porch 2014 008

09-Fall Porch 2014 012 . . . to go with my velvet pumpkins.

04-Fall Porch 2014 006

12-Fall Porch 2014 015

11-Fall Porch 2014 014

07-Fall Porch 2014 009I found a gigantic mum just beginning to bloom out and I’m hoping it will be in full color when our friends from the NW come for a visit in just a few weeks.

08-Fall Porch 2014 011Our good Ol’ Beauregard has found his rightful place on our new front porch.

14-Fall Porch 2014 018He arrived with a few new scrapes and scratches but we’ll have him in top shape again . . . as soon as I can find my paints!

05-Fall Porch 2014 007So it isn’t exactly the same as my old front porch but I’ve still used very natural elements to add some much needed color to my front porch.  I’m pretty sure having our butler dog Beauregard adds a bit of class to the whole picture too . . . or at least a bit of whimsy.  I don’t think I’ll have to change my style much at all.  Your thoughts?

By the way, I have the BEST method of making velvet pumpkins which I’ll be sharing with you later this week so I do hope you’ll come on back.

Blessings,

A Fond Farewell to our Pattison Lake House

September 18, 2014 by Patti 6 Comments

At LONG last we are finally here and beginning to feel settled into our new home in South Carolina.  For the past couple of weeks we’ve been unpacking boxes and trying to figure out where things should go.  We’ve also been trying to find our way around the city (I’ve gotten lost three times), have been shopping for a new car, searching out the right people to help with yard work and bug control (EEK!), looking for a good place to take Mr. OTN’s dry cleaning, etc., etc., etc.  We’ve been church shopping as well, which is a whole new experience here.  How do you know you are in the South?  There are more churches than there are Starbucks!  The FUN part of decorating our home has also begun and my plan is to get one room (nearly) completed at a time and share my progress with y’all (trying out my Southern accent) as I go.

In the meantime, this post is a fond farewell to our Pattison Lake home back  in Washington State.  Let me share with you our “million dollar view”  and some of the sights we saw each and every day.

2-Pattison Lake 007The sky was always changing and we took many pictures during our ten years on the lake.  This is one of our sunrises as viewed from our deck.  Fall sunrises were always the BEST!

2-Pattison Lake 006This is the same sky reflected in the lake.

1-Pattison Lake 005And here, a different day, a different color.

1-Pattison Lake 001Do you see Mount Rainier over to the right in this picture?  Love that mountain!

1-Foggy Sunrise on Pattison lake 002And here is yet another day with the sunrise peeking through the fog.

We had some marvelous moonrises over the lake as well.

3-Moonrise over Pattison Lake 007Here is a moonrise on the lakeside while the sun was setting behind our house.

3-Sunset over Pattison lake 014

2-Sunset over Pattison lake 012Can you see why it was a bit hard for us to leave our lake house?

On summer evenings one of our favorite things to do was to cruise around the lake on our pontoon boat.  I never tired of looking at other peoples houses and yards to see what they were up to.  Pattison Lake used to be a resort lake and, unlike the lakes closer in to Seattle with their multi-million dollar houses, many of these lake homes are simple summer cabins.  This is exactly what made it feel like we were on a never ending vacation while we lived there, especially in summer.

15-Pattison Lake Homes 093So come along with me as I enjoy one last cruise around the lake.  I think you’ll see the fun nature of our neighbors in some of the yards and also catch a glimpse of the patriotism of this military community.

75-Pattison Lake Homes 218Finally, here we are back at home.73-Pattison Lake Homes 211I’m not sure what the glow is in this final picture of our old house but I like to think it is the blessing that rests over it. We are absolutely thrilled that our friends John and Debbie bought our home and will continue to enjoy it as much as we did.  This home had many people in and out of it’s doors during our time there and it was often a refuge to the weary and brokenhearted.  John and Deb will continue that tradition and for that we are thankful.

76-Pattison Lake Homes 219To be very honest, moving away from Washington State, the only place I’ve ever lived, has been an emotional roller coaster.  I’ve had times of great excitement and absolute joy over this beautiful new place we get to live but also times of great sadness, especially over the great friends I’ve left behind.  I know without a doubt though that this is where we are supposed to be and I’m looking forward to the adventure that lies before us.

So . . . farewell to Pattison Lake with a picture of one last rainbow to remind us that God is smiling down on us, wherever we are.
