All That Glitters in my Entry Hall

November 9, 2013 by Patti 28 Comments

Step into my entry hall where all that glitters is definitely not real gold but I hope you’ll still feel a big, warm welcome! I am so happy that gold tones have made a comeback in home decor. If you’ve read this blog for any time at all you’ll know that I am a big fan of blues and greens but I have always loved using touches of gold and red as well. This Fall I’ve been busy changing things up a bit to give my entryway a warm feel for the chilly days ahead.

It all began with the wall color, the same tan tone I have in my living room with a Valspar Brushed Pearl Finish painted over that base color. This finish is very subtle, unlike the sponge paint that was previously on this wall, and I think it adds just a touch of elegance. FYI: Lowe’s doesn’t carry the same color I used in my entry hall any longer but if you look at the link to the Brushed Pearl finishes, “Simply Elegant” looks pretty close to what I have here.

The first thing I did to welcome Fall was to take off my summery linen pillow covers, exposing the heavier Fall fabrics beneath. I don’t buy new pillows, I just swap out pillow covers for each season, saving money and space.

This is a bench we picked up at our local Habitat Re-Store. I’ve left it unpainted for now as the wood is nice but I’m contemplating painting it Pottery Barn black. What do you think? I’m open to suggestions.

It’s nice that the lid on this piece opens for storing our scarves and gloves. I’ve added two pillow top cushions for comfy seating and four baskets beneath for more storage.

Next I started rearranging my wall to make space for a very special new arrival which I’ll share with you at the end! Each of my wall hangings have been collected over time and all have special meaning to me.

I love antique frames and picked this one up at a local antique store. I think it’s funny when people comment that a frame isn’t in good shape because of the pieces that are broken off of it. The imperfections of this frame are exactly what made me want to take it home.

The monogram was a cardboard letter from JoAnne’s painted with gold paint and aged with dark wax. I added some rosettes made from old book pages and dry brushed them with a bit of gold.

I was only a young child but I remember the day my mom purchased this picture of a little girl at her piano lesson. She found it at an oceanside antique store on our way home from a trip to southern California. For many years it hung over the organ in our home and was meant to be an encouragement to me to practice, practice, practice . . . something I didn’t really want to do. It later hung over my own daughter’s keyboard where she practiced for the pure joy of making music. Needless to say, she became much more accomplished than I.

Antique mirrors are also something I’m drawn to and this little one is perfect for that one last check before I head out the door!

This sweet little brass hand was one of those things I just couldn’t pass up and how lovely it is for holding a few flowers from my yard.

This is an oil painting we purchased in Israel in 2007. I first saw this painting through a shop window on the Cardo, the main street through the old city of Jerusalem. I was so touched to think of the brave soldiers who protect the nation of Israel praying at the wailing wall for their own protection, that it brought tears to my eyes. The shop owner, the artist himself, came out of the shop to talk to me and when he saw how moved I was he offered to give me the picture. Of course I couldn’t let him do that but I did purchase it and had it shipped home. The oil paint used in the wailing wall portion of the painting has actual crushed wailing wall stone mixed into it. I later came to find out that the artist is quite famous in Israel and throughout the world. His paintings hang in many prestigious places, including The White House. If there is anything pure gold about my entry hall, this is it!

Next is another old frame I fell in love with at another antique shop and made into a chalkboard modeled after one I saw at Worthing Court. 2004 is the year we bought the home we live in now. Suzy’s tutorial on how to transfers letters to chalkboards is just great! I look forward to doing more chalkboard art in the future.

Finally, my most recent purchase and something I find to be such a fun addition to my entry hall are these lovely horns! I thought they were supposed to be antelope horns but they don’t look like any of the pictures I’ve seen online, so I don’t really know what they are. Can anyone tell me?

This is a before pic of our friend John (you remember the photo bomber from my last post?) attempting to attach them to his hat.

This is the after, with the plaque cleaned up and stained, the horns bleached to remove the greenish tinge and the tips gold leafed. Aren’t they amazing?

Did you notice how the sunlight catches the gold on these horns? And it’s a cloudy day! I think these horns are going to bring great joy into my life! Haha!

I know it isn’t everyone’s style to have horns hanging in their home. I guess that’s why they call my style Farmhouse Glam! If you’re interested in finding out what your particular style is you can take a test right HERE. It has actually been very helpful to put a name to my style in that it has helped me to stay focused when I go shopping. I just like so many different things!

Of course I had to add a little Fall wreath for embellishment!

So that’s the update to my Entry Hall, and here’s Sasha, eagerly awaiting the arrival of company.

Though I’ve resisted until now putting away the summer decor I’ve finally embraced the season and I’m enjoying the changes to my home. It will be nice to sit by the fire on the long dark winter nights ahead and sip on a hot drink. What a nice break it will be from all the outdoor work of Spring and Summer.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven . . . Ecclesiastes 3:3 (KJV)

I hope you are enjoying this season of life too.

Blessings to you,

A Visit to The Amazing (and Scary?) Manresa Castle

October 31, 2013 by Patti 15 Comments

Last week we took a much needed escape to Port Townsend, Washington. It was one of those unplanned, spur-of-the-moment trips. We didn’t really have the time to get away, considering our long list of “to-do’s”, but sometimes it is just necessary to take a time out for the sake of one’s sanity. That said, the two friends we brought along with us are no “saner” than we are so, needless to say, we had a hilarious time! One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to and personal tour of Manresa Castle in Port Townsend.

Fantastic right?

Then we stepped into the gorgeous lobby . . .

which leads into a front parlor sitting room . . .

. . . filled with fabulous antique furnishings.

Next stop on the main floor is a dance hall. Notice Mr. Dainty Dancer, AKA The Photo Bomber? Take a good look at him. At the end I’m going to ask you to tell me how many times you can spot him in this post.

After our tour of the main floor we headed upstairs in this antique and somewhat shaky elevator. Mr. OTN, and our friends Debbie and John are scared but trying to put up a brave front.

What does that say? Guest Elevator? Or is it Ghost Elevator? Goodbye guys! I’m taking the stairs! Haha! Just kidding.

We were given a peek into several of the rooms, all of which are available for nightly stays, and all with a view of either the water or the garden courtyard.

This bedroom is reported to be home to a few ghosts. Haha! I don’t believe in ghosts, do you?

This gorgeous bedroom is on the turret corner of the castle and has a wonderful sitting area. I’ll take this one please!

Heading down the hallway Mr. OTN asked our tour guide what these stairs led to and she told him it was the attic. “What’s up there?”, we ALL wanted to know. “Oh nothing, just some old furniture and stuff.” What? Just old furntiture and STUFF? Well, being that we had spent the entire car trip to Port Townsend hitting the junk stores you’d better believe we asked it we could go up and take a look!

Oh my goodness? What is this circle of chairs? Our tour guide told us that this is where the ghost hunters come to wait for ghosts. So silly!

What are you doing up there John?

John the dainty dancer, AKA The Photo Bomber, AKA The executioner? Oh my!

And yes, he was the only one who was willing to climb the ladder to the top of the turret to take this picture of Port Townsend and the harbor below.

Heading back downstairs we finished up with a tour of the restaurant.

Some more gorgeous windows.

I couldn’t resist throwing in a couple more pictures of these beautiful leaded glass windows,

and the amazing woodwork seen throughout the castle.

Here is one more view of Port Townsend from the front porch.

And a final look back. Wait . . . what’s that in the upper window?

Oh whew! It’s just our tour guide and her friend waving goodbye.

I hope you enjoyed the tour. For a link to the history of Manresa Castle you can click HERE. To check out the rooms and rates click on the link Manresa Castle.

Oh no! I almost forgot! How many times DID you see our photo bombing friend?

Blessings to you,

Generation Vintage Fall Open House

September 18, 2013 by Patti Leave a Comment

Generation Vintage was one of the many vendors I met at last weekend’s French Flea Market. They are hosting an Open House this weekend at their shop and studio and I want to encourage you to pay them a visit if you are in the Olympia area. These ladies are so sweet and they are a three generation team of mom (Keri) , daughter (Victoria) and baby girl (Aubrey)! I’m trying to figure out how to slip away from the classes Mr. OTN and I are teaching all day Saturday. Hmmm . . . maybe we’ll finish up in enough time to rush on over there!

So here are just a few pictures I took of their space at the French Flea (the lighting was really bad so please excuse the quality).

Refurbished furniture,

Vintage finds,

Cool retro stuff,

. . . and repurposed items . . . that’s what you’ll find at Generation Vintage‘s Fall Open House. So grab a girlfriend (or your husband if you have a shopper like mine) and enjoy browsing while sipping on a cup of hot spiced cider.

Victoria and her adorable Aubrey.

Wishing you great success at your exciting event ladies.

Blessings,

Queen Bee French Flea Market Highlights

September 16, 2013 by Patti 31 Comments

Monday morning and I’m still in awe of the beautiful displays, creative talent, and the goodhearted helpfulness of the vendors at this year’s Queen Bee French Flea Market. A year ago I attended as a shopper. It was the first year of the event that was sponsored by The Queen Bee Art Cottage and Courtyard Antiques of Olympia, Washington. I was smitten with everything I saw that day and longed to be a part of it all! When I saw a sign up sheet to participate in the next year’s market I thought, “Why not?” It couldn’t hurt to sign up for the information.

As the year went on I plugged away at my projects, blogging about them along the way. I pushed the thought of being a market vendor to the back of my mind because I didn’t know if I would really get to the point of being brave enough to actually do it. But months later, when I received my first email about the upcoming event I decided to go for it. I asked my beautiful and talented friend Linda if she’d be interested in sharing booth space with me (I’m SO thankful I did) and we got to work.

So last Saturday was the one-day market and it was a whirlwind experience! I love being creative. It is my release. To slip away to my garage and lovingly work on a piece of old furniture, bringing out new beauty, fills me with joy. The two weeks leading up to the market though were CRRR . . . AZY!!! Working night and day trying to finish my projects, attempting to figure out in my head how we would set things up, what props would be needed, how we would place them in our 12 x 12 space, what tools we’d need to bring along, the lighting, who was going to lift the heavy stuff for us, etc., etc., etc. For those of you who’ve done this before you know what I mean. More on how all of that worked out later. Let me take you in to The Queen Bee French Flea Market for a peek at the AMAZING shopping experience it was . . . just like walking into a Paris Market . . . (FYI, I kinda rushed through these pictures because I couldn’t leave my booth for very long, so I’m sorry for the less than stellar quality).

I can’t possibly show you every vendor so here are a few pictures of each of my market “neighbors”. Poppy & Co. has a wonderful storefront shop in Tacoma, Washington. This is only a peek of what you’ll find there.

If you’ve never been shopping in Snohomish, Washington you’ve gotta go! That’s where Faded Elegance is located. We’re talking a girl’s overnight there soon.

37-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 079Forget Me Not is a local Olympia, Washington store and one of my favorite places to browse on a dreary Washington day. The warmth of their store is reflected in their booth at the market.

40-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 082 41-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 083

Next is Flippin’ Cute Stuff. This was Lisa’s first market experience also and she is hoping to begin selling in the retail market soon. I definitely think she’s ready, don’t you?

Her entire store was set up to look like you were walking into a bedroom. The “bed” was two tables covered in bedding. Everything she has created is so lovely.

One more local Olympia shop you’ll love is Tattered Treasures.

Last of all, here are some pictures of our booth. To be completely honest, during the set up on Friday I felt a bit overwhelmed by of the quality of merchandise I saw coming into this market. There were a lot of dealers with “real” stores and real experience. My workshop is my kitchen counter and almost everything in our shop was handmade. In spite of that I don’t think it turned out too badly.

My banner above . . . and some close ups of our shop’s wares below . . .

21-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 059That’s Linda on the left and Moi on the right, all dressed up in our Frenchy finery so that we could haul boxes, lift heavy furniture, scuttle under tables with extension cords . . . and look pretty for the shoppers! I think my hair is sticking to my head with sweat here!

At the end of the day my body was exhausted but my spirit soared. It wasn’t because I made a pile of money, although we did do well, but because of the goodness of people who supported this dream of mine. During the months leading up to the market I had friends who would stop by just to see what I was working on and cheer me on. I had fellow bloggers sending encouraging words. The week before market two friends of mine (a husband and wife duo) offered a whole day out of their own very busy lives to help with anything I needed. You better bet I took them up on their offer while at the same time thinking, “Who does that?”

I’m a wife and a mom who has always served my family, I’ve run a daycare out of my home when my kids were small and then I worked in the health care field for years. I serve, but I’m not used to being served, and I must admit that it is a little hard for me to accept . . . but I’m learning. The day before the event I had friends texting me, one even offering to bring over a nutritious lunch! My husband had to work so he wasn’t available to help (oh, but he did help because he encouraged me all year long and provided the funds needed to fund this creativity of mine). Linda’s family (Rob, Josh & Autumn) really stepped up to the plate, loading trucks, hauling the heavy stuff, climbing up into precarious places to hang lighting, banners, etc. By the time our set up was complete I couldn’t even look at our booth anymore without being totally critical. That’s when my friend Deanna came to do some fine tuning. That’s what she does professionally and she is really good at it. During the event many friends came by to visit and show their support, even offering helping hands as they saw the need.

As I shared this story yesterday two people said to me, “That’s what family does.” But my family lives far away . . . and my husband works a job with long hours, and that isn’t at all flexible . . . so much of the time I really am on my own. So what family??? This is the family that God has put into my life. We all go to different churches but we hear the same message to encourage, serve and help others in need. Need? I’m not impoverished or ill. I didn’t really NEED to be involved in this market . . . but I really, really wanted to be. So was this really a need? I guess it appeared that way to my friends. It was a dream and they wanted to help me see my dream fulfilled. Even as I write this there are tears in my eyes. There are many lessons for me to ponder here. I know for certain that I am BLESSED.

So what’s next? Do I want to start doing the market circuit? Oh no, not me. We begin teaching Freedom Session again at the end of the month and that is the biggest priority in my life, as my husband and I get to be a part of seeing people’s lives renewed. Old Things New, is not just for furniture you know! So for now I will continue blogging, creating, and doing a show here and there as I’m able. I do hope I can be a part of The Queen Bee’s French Flea again next year. It was a blast!

Blessings to you my dear readers,

Queen Bee French Flea 2013 153

Junking at The Second Hand Rose

August 31, 2013 by Patti 6 Comments

One of my favorite close-to-home getaways is The Second Hand Rose in Lacey, Washington. This get-away isn’t a resort or a spa retreat (although those things are nice too), it is an antique, junk, and miscellaneous store like no other! People come from miles away to explore this amazing store and my first visit took me two hours to complete!!! I want to share just a peek with you today.
The Second Hand Rose is housed in a former dance hall so it is really BIG! I’ll show you the outside yard first to give you a feel for what this place is all about. No commentary necessary, it is simply fabulous!

Pretty cool right? There are always fun bargains to be had outside . . . now let’s head indoors.

Can you see why I love this store? There is so much to see and it isn’t all in front of your eyes. Up, down, all around . . . even the drawers in the display pieces are filled with treasures! Looking for something you can’t find? Just ask and they probably have it somewhere!

The Second Hand Rose is only open Friday-Sunday. Sometimes when I get an idea into my head of something I “need” it is a wee bit torturous to have to wait until they open again to go find it. This has become a place that I make regular drop-in visits to because the store is always changing . . . things moving in and out . . . and you never know what you might find.

Finally this is Terry, the owner of The Second Hand Rose. A lifelong collector and the nicest man you could ever meet. Taking a trip to Washington State? Put this place on your tourism map for sure!

I hope you’re having a wonderful Labor Day weekend. I’m headed off on a little jaunt to Camas, Washington today to check out the Camas Vintage Street Faire.

Blessings,
