Decorating With Preserved Boxwood

February 26, 2015 by Patti 17 Comments

A long cardboard box on the front porch, the zip of the box cutter, rose tissue paper crunching under anxious fingers as it’s pulled away from lush green branches, and awww . . . inhale the sweet scent of boxwood.

These are the little things that make me happy.

I don’t have boxwood bushes in my yard and the cost of buying preserved boxwood wreaths and topiaries can be quite high. But I have found a great source for preserved boxwood in bulk and it is very reasonable considering how much comes in one box (4.4 pounds is a LOT of boxwood) and how long it lasts. I’ve had my miniature boxwood wreaths for 1-1/2 years now and they still look like they are fresh cut greens.

Bella Marie is my source for preserved boxwood and I’ve never been disappointed with their product or their service (this is not a paid post by the way).

I like touches of green around my house year round and since I’m not great with houseplants over the long haul (I kill them) (not on purpose) (I love them but they don’t love me), this is a wonderful option for me. Let me show you some of the different ways I decorate my home with preserved boxwood. I created this wreath with added wired silver balls for embellishment. I like the extra touch of color it adds to my display of blue plates in the kitchen.

Here I added a little green to a bouquet of roses purchased at the Charleston Farmer’s Market. They were handmade by Miz Laura, a Gullah craftsperson we met there.

This is a topiary I created with preserved boxwood (Tutorial HERE).

This large wreath was simple to make with a recycled grapevine wreath that was once adorned with brightly colored silk flowers.

As you may have noticed in some of my previous posts, I enjoy using touches of boxwood all over my house.

I have several small wreaths that I’ve used in various places.

I also like to use sprigs of boxwood here and there, even more so during the holidays.

I decorate with boxwood year round to add a fresh look of the outdoors to the inside of my home.

Kitchen Swag 024

I’m so happy I bought boxwood in bulk. Even with all the things I’ve made, my box from Bella Marie still has quite a bit of boxwood left to work with, and I have a lot more ideas running around in my head. Maybe even some gifts for my friends (wink, wink).

Speaking of gifts (what an amazing segway that was) Farragoz (the online painting course featured on my sidebar) has a SPECIAL OFFER just for my readers, now through the end of March. The course, which is usually priced at $150 will be $99 for this limited time. I wish you ALL could’ve won the contest I hosted but this is the next best thing! Farragoz Giveaway - And The Winner is . . .

February 23, 2015 by Patti 3 Comments

Were you one of those lucky girls that was chosen first for games in P.E.? Or even second or third? Or twenty-second in a class of thirty? Insert Patti frowny face here because I was NOT. On the bright side, I wasn’t usually the last either, only second or third to the last. “Bashtiful Patti,” the neighbor man’s name for me, wasn’t very assertive so I was never a top pick for competitive sports. Now, if we’d had to choose teams for art class . . . well . . . I wouldn’t have been top pick for that team either but I would’ve been closer to the top for sure! Awww . . . the traumas of childhood.

Repurposed “Jonque”

That is probably what’s behind my wanting everyone to be a winner of the Farragoz Giveaway I’ve been running on my blog. I’ve learned so many things in this painting course that I can now apply to my furniture painting and repurposing of “jonque” (junk looks so much better in French) that I want everyone else who is a painter of stuff to have the chance to learn what I’ve learned. But there can only be one winner . . . THIS time!

So . . . drum roll please . . . Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr . . .

The winner of the Farragoz Painting Course is JUDY!

Congratulations Judy. Farragoz will be contacting you via email today to get you started.

Repurposed “jonque”

Now . . . since I want everyone to feel special do I have a consolation prize for the rest of you? Stay tuned for my next post.

Blessings,

Shabby Flannel Roses for Valentine’s Day

February 6, 2015 by Patti 15 Comments

Have you ever had a love affair with an article of clothing? Some things are easy to put into the donation bag and some . . . well . . . not so easy.

Sounds silly right? But this little red flannel shirt and I go back a long way. She’s experienced a lot of life with me. Once crisp and new, she is now aged to the perfect degree of softness. Once stylin’ with a pair of crisp black jeans she now looks better paired with faded ol’ blue jeans. Once a perfect fit, she is now snug across the back and the front. No, it isn’t too many trips to Cracker Barrel (though this new place we’ve found to eat since moving south worries my youngest daughter greatly), it is this strange shape-shifting thing that is going on now that I’m about to turn . . . EEK . . . 60!!! But even with my renewed commitment to fitness (Water Zumba - so much FUN) this shirt is past it’s prime . . . one sleeve is covered in paint, the color frayed, and fabric wearing thin.

So rather than toss my beloved shirt, I decided to make some flannel rosettes, especially since it is red and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. With a few strips cut and rolled, and a little bit of hot glue, it was a quick and easy project accomplished in just over an hour.

Voila! Shabby flannel roses! Here, I’ve attached them to a kitchen towel to add to my Valentine’s Day decor.

What do you think?

I think there is nothing cuter than rosettes made of flannel.

I think they are good for my health because they make me smile!

I think they add a great pop of color to my white kitchen.

I think they look perfect right alongside my Valentine’s Day towels.

Wool Shirt Rosette Wreath 001-001

There are so many things you can do with flannel rosettes. I made these rosettes a few years ago for a Christmas wreath but for
Valentine’s Day you could make a heart-shaped wreath, or attach them to a Valentine’s Day card or gift, or put a pin on the back and wear them on the lapel of a jean jacket (cute right?), or make a whole bouquet of plaid roses and pop them into a vase!

Creating a GLITTERY Nutcracker From a Thrift Store Find!

December 9, 2014 by Patti 8 Comments

Have you ever been out shopping when you’ve seen something that makes you proclaim, “I can make that!”? I do that all of the time, as a few of my friends can attest. Sometimes the things I think I can make turn out to be beyond my overly confident capabilities. Other times I give a project a try and I’m rewarded with the taste of success! This is one of those times.

I began thinking about creating my own glittery nutcracker after we attended last year’s performance of The Nutcracker Ballet in Seattle. The nutcrackers in the gift store were so magnificent that I couldn’t resist buying one of my own. Looking back, I’m so glad that I did because at the time we had no idea that that would be our last Christmas living in the Seattle area. After bringing my nutcracker home I began thinking about all of the sad, old nutcrackers sitting in our local Goodwill Christmas Store. That’s when I decided I’d try my hand at creating my own Glittery Nutcracker. After wading through an awful lot of nutcrackers I came across this little guy, whose face intrigued me . . .

Today I’ll show you the transformation of a thrift store nutcracker into a colorful and glittery nutcracker!

This is the way our nutcracker looked when we found him, in all of his traditional nutcracker colors.

This is the kit full of magic that I used to transform him into what he is today!

Though there are a lot of less expensive glitter sets than Martha Stewart’s, this set has the most beautiful colors of them all! Plus, the glitter really goes a long way as you simply pour what shakes off back into the containers for future use.

My daughter Bethany actually came up with the design and color choices for this nutcracker while she was home on vacation last Christmas.

She started the project by painting over the traditional red and black nutcracker uniform with pearlized and metallic paints (Martha Stewart Pearl Aquarium, Martha Stewart Metallic Sterling and Yellow Gold, and Decor Art Metallic Crystal Green)

She left the chippy face and hands alone as they have so much character just as they are.

Bethany used a paint brush to apply a thin layer of Martha Stewart glue creating a design of stripes on the jacket and hat . . .

. . . and a triangular “skirt” on the lower portion of the jacket.

After the glue was applied she simply shook the glitter onto the nutcracker, gently knocked off the excess and allowed the nutcracker to dry before going on to the next color.

As you can see, portions of the nutcracker were left glitter free.

I love her choice of jewel tones don’t you?

Since Bethany didn’t have quite enough time to finish the project while she was home I added the final details, white glitter on the mustache and eyebrows, and the painting of the staff and base. Hmmm . . . I guess you could say that this wasn’t really my success at all since she did most of the work! I did come up with the bright idea though!

You can see from the picture above how the glitter has” traveled” from the mostasche onto the face. That is a quick fix by gently brushing away the excess with a dry paint brush once the glue is completely dry.

To set the glitter in place so it won’t rub off with handling, I used extra strength hairspray and lightly misted over the entire piece. Krylon also creates a non-yellowing protective sealer called Make It Last!, but since the colors are dark I think the hairspray will be just fine.

Here are a few more pictures of our glittery nutcracker with the rest of his soldier friends.

Yes, that is the nutcracker from the ballet. I still think he’s gorgeous!

I haven’t put away my glitters just yet as I’m working on a special project for the fireplace mantle in our new home. I’m SO excited to finish so I can share it with you! I do hope you’ll come back to see the surprise!

What have you come across in your shopping that you’ve determined you would make yourself rather than buy? How did it turn out? Do the things you make ever include thrift store finds? I find great joy in making Old Things New and I hope you do too!

Blessings,
