Pottery Barn “Jingle” Pillow Tutorial

December 3, 2013 by Patti 29 Comments

Pottery Barn catalog is one of my favorite sources for decorating ideas and inspiration for creating “one of my own.” Sooo . . . when the Christmas catalog arrived and I saw this cute little Pottery Barn “Jingle” Pillow the wheels in my head began turning. In no time at all I had created a new pillow that was much kinder to my budget than the $39.50 Pottery Barn price!

In addition, I think the font on this pillow is actually cuter than Pottery Barn’s, with the added embellishment of tweeting birds and snowflakes!

Here is what you’ll need to put this together yourself:

Drop Cloth Fabric, Burlap or another fabric of your choice

A Pillow Form - or - Polyester Fiberfill

Jingle Bells

Iron-on Transfer Paper (I recommend Lesley Riley Tap which I purchased from Amazon.com. It really is the best!)

A Free Font From Dafont.com

This is the super cute font (KingthingsChristmas) that I chose from Dafont.com. This great website has hundreds of fonts available for download onto your computer’s word processing program. Most are free or “by donation” to the creator. The homepage at Dafont.com gives downloading instructions for your particular type of computer. For my PC I simply chose the font I wanted, hit “download” and saved it to my computer. Then I opened the font I’d just installed (if you have trouble finding it do a search). When you open it a page comes up with several lines. One line says “read this” and it gives guidelines for use of the font (most are for private use only). On another line is the font itself which you simply “open” and “install”. If your computer shows a “zipped” file just right click and “extract” to open the file.

The next step is to open your computer’s Word Processing program and type out your text, in this case the word “jingle”. After typing the text you’ll adjust your font size (this was 600) and color (red). I ended up with four pages and saved them in my pictures as a JPEG file.

The next step requires that you have Microsoft Publisher which, to me, is really worth having as I use it all the time. Open Publisher and choose a blank page size (8-1/2 x 11). “Insert” your saved picture onto the blank page (you will be inserting and flipping one page at a time). Highlight your text and click on “arrange”, “rotate or flip” and “flip horizontal”. Now you have a mirror image of your script and you are ready to print onto your iron-on transfer paper and then iron onto your pre-cut fabric. You can make your pillow any size you want but mine (and PB’s) is 12″x24″.

After ironing sew on a few jingle bells to the front of your pillow, stitch your pillow together, stuff (or add a pillow form) and sew bells to the four corners of your pillow.

My pillow looked perfect on Mr. OTN’s leather lounge chair. He loved it too. In fact, he missed it when it disappeared. SOLD! Yes, right out from under him. I will be making him another though. Super cute! Super easy! Super cheap! My kinda’ holiday craft. Do you have a favorite idea catalog? What kinds of “knock-offs” have you tried? I think it would be fun to have a “knock-off” party. What about you?

Blessings to you,

Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House

November 27, 2013 by Patti 8 Comments

So, a couple of weeks ago I had this hair brained idea. Our guest cottage became open unexpectedly, leaving us with just a few weeks before the arrival of our Christmas visitors. Not being one to waste a good opportunity I asked Mr. OTN if we (my friend Linda and I) could host an Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House (wow, that’s a mouthful) and sell some of the things we’ve been working on. Knowing that this would mean a bit of craziness around our house he gave us the go ahead (love him!) and we started working on getting it together this week. Actually, we started getting it together just yesterday as we were busy with another bazaar last weekend. I’ll give you all the details at the end of the post but for now, here are some of the items we’ll be selling:

Seasonal decor . . .

Purses and jewelry . . .

Some mod decor . . .

A coastal themed room . . . after all, that is the decor of our little cottage . . .

A bit of French Country . . .

This is one of the pieces Linda’s been working on with a special paint that gives a patina’d metal effect to just about anything . . .

And lots of miscellaneous pretties . . .

Finally, I’m selling some of my Patti’s Perfect Paint Powder that can be mixed with any latex paint to create a homemade chalk paint. After testing many home made chalk paint recipes this is the one I find to be superior. I’ve packaged some up some to sell locally and, who knows, maybe I’ll find a market it for it on my blog as well. I’ll be demonstrating how it works while I sell!

So, here are all the details. Our Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House (that is STILL a mouthful) will be held this Friday and Saturday from 9-3. I would love for you to come on by if you are in the area. Along with our own handcrafted items we have a couple of friends who’ve contributed to our “store”. Our cottage by the lake is THE place to be on Black Friday (and Saturday). We’d love for you to come have a cup of hot chocolate and stick around awhile for a little visit.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving,

Fabulous Tickled Pink Friday Features . . . I’m so Inspired!

October 3, 2013 by Patti 3 Comments

I am so happy to be participating in the Tickled Pink Times Two Fridays party again this week. Holly at 504 Main and Meegan at What Meegan Makes throw the best party, so I was honored when Holly asked me if I’d like to pick a few of my favorite features from last week. Are you kidding? I am THRILLED by the opportunity!!! But guess what? It’s harder than you’d think. There were so many great links and, since I’m the kinda gal that wants to make everyone happy (yeah, I’m working on that), it was a really tough decision. I ended up choosing three very different types of links.

First off is the Faux Leather Sign shared by Amber over at Domestic Bliss Squared. Hilary and Jessica asked her to create a Fall themed sign for their Fall Festival of Guest Posters. Isn’t this great? She shares the complete tutorial too! After you check out her sign at Domestic Bliss Squared, please be sure to head over to Dimples and Pigtails to read Amber’s inspiring story.

My next pick is from Karen at Redoux Interiors. She shows us the amazing patina she’s achieved on a plain wooden table, with the use of special paints. I already have the perfect picture frame that I’m going to try this on. You’ll definitely want to visit this site if you are interested in making old things new. Karen is not only amazingly talented at furniture re-dos but she is very real and very funny!

Finally, since it is Fall and time for comfort foods, I chose Cathy’s (Lemon Tree Dwelling) Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel Corn. Doesn’t this look delicious? Dark chocolate, popcorn and salted caramel . . . three of my favorite treats all rolled into one. I can’t wait to try it!

I hope you are as inspired as I am. Thank you Holly and Meegan for letting me share in the fun this week!

Blessings,
