When Life Gives You a Broken Wrist (or a Leaky Birdbath) Plant Succulents!

May 15, 2015 by Patti 32 Comments

Perhaps you’ve noticed that I haven’t been blogging much lately and yes, there is a reason. I hate to sound whiny here on my blog and I also hate to seem whimpy. That’s why I waited a week after breaking my wrist before going to the doctor to have it x-rayed. That’s also why I waited two weeks after the cast came off before going back to the doctor with my suspicion that something wasn’t right. Pride? Yeah, maybe.

Feeling more pain after the cast comes off than when it went on is not good. Not being able to write or type or turn the key in the ignition, or sleep soundly at night because of shooting pain up your arm is bad. Having your husband tell you to get into the doctor, when your husband is a doctor, is the worst!

I remind myself that a broken wrist is a little thing and how blessed I am compared to people who have really awful things in their lives. Still, not being able to work on all of the projects I’ve started has left me feeling a bit “down in the dumps” for the past couple of months (losing our SnoopyGirl didn’t help either).

Succulent birdbath prep

Before planting I drilled a few holes in the bottom of the cement birdbath and added rocks to the bottom for drainage as succulents don’t like to remain too moist.

So when life gives you a broken wrist, or a leaky birdbath, the perfect thing to do is plant succulents! I have been able to do projects that don’t require small motor movement of my right hand and wrist so I’ve been spending a lot of time working in my yard, which is a delight this time of year. Now . . . since even writing this little bit is painful . . . I’m going to move on and show you the pics I took after planting this old birdbath and thrift store pitcher with succulents.

Succulent Birdbath 001a

This is one small corner of my yard where I’ve added color. Beyond the grass is a fenced wooded area with a walking trail. We plan to add more plantings along the edge of the grass as time goes on in order to create a bit of an enclosed courtyard feeling to our backyard.

Over the summer these succulents will grow and begin to overflow this container like they did in the three-tiered succulent planter I did a couple of summers ago.

Super simple and super cute right? And how handy it was to have a tree right there to wire the pitcher to.

Succulent Birdbath 006

Today I start twice weekly occupational therapy on my frozen wrist. My faith tells me to pray for healing of my wrist. I’ve had lots of prayer and I believe that God is healing my hand. The whiny in me would love for it to be sooner rather than later.

Though I’ve missed sharing what I’m working on with you all I can honestly say that I’m enjoying not having the pressure of hours spent preparing and sharing posts. As we head into summer my stress meter is lower than it’s been in a long time so perhaps I’m learning a thing or two along the way. Any maybe, just maybe, God’s timing for healing my hand is the perfect timing 🙂

Though I’m not blogging much right now I AM taking pictures of the things I’m enjoying every day. If you like to share in that, please follow me on Instagram.

Blessings to you until the next time,

Counting Down the Hours!

October 22, 2014 by Patti 6 Comments

I am SO excited.

I just don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep tonight!

Do you have any idea what happens when I don’t get enough sleep? No, of course you don’t! I get all emotional and teary and giggly and silly all at the same time. I don’t function very effectively and I need to be able to function to take in all that this upcoming weekend has to offer!

So what is all the excitement about? This weekend I will be attending my first Allume Conference in Greenville, SC (right down the road from where I now live). Not only that! My gal Debbie and her husband John (the ones who bought our old house) are flying in tonight so she can attend the conference with me!

Woot!!!

So what is the Allume Conference all about?

Logan Wolfram, Executive Director and Host of Allume says:

“We desire to increase people’s passion for the power of Jesus to reach others…to equip them with the vehicle of online blogging and social media, to engage them to recognize the power of the voice that they have in that space, and to release them into the world… into that space… and into their communities with a greater passion for the power of Jesus to reach others.
It’s ‘Real Light Living.’ “

In addition to a great statement of purpose this conference will be packed with awesome speakers, individual workshops, opportunities to fellowship with other writers, and (they tell us) gifts galore! Again . . . Woot!

I first heard about the conference from Diane at An Extraordinary Day last Spring when she emailed me in response to a question I asked her. As that email came through my inbox Mr. OTN and I were in the process of planning a trip to Greenville to check on a job opportunity and to see if the city would be a place where we might like to relocate.

Me: “Can you believe it? A Christian bloggers and writer’s conference in Greenville, of all places!”

Mr. OTN: “When is it?”

Me: “In October.”

Mr. OTN: “Book it!”

Me: “What? How do you know we’ll be living there?”

Mr. OTN: “Book it!”

I guess I would’ve been making my way across the country to the conference if he hadn’t been offered the job he applied for the on the very same day that he interviewed for it. Maybe Mr. OTN knew something I didn’t about the direction our lives would take but a Christian blogger’s conference in Greenville was definitely one of the many “signs” that pointed the way toward South Carolina.

So, the guest room is ready . . . though not decorated exactly the way I want it . . . but hey, we haven’t even been here for two months.

I’m ready . . . to hug on Deb’s neck and to go to what I believe will be a fabulous conference together!

Mr. OTN is ready . . . to see his friend John and to hang out and do guy things . . . like watching the Seahawks in our NW/Seahawk themed Bonus Room!

I’m hoping to come back from the weekend with lots of goodness to share with Y’all.

Blessings,

A Brand New Blog Design

March 12, 2014 by Patti 7 Comments

It has been a much longer break from blogging than anticipated but I’m finally back, roaring to go, with A Brand New Blog Design. What do you think? Do you love it? I do! I’ve struggled with a lot of little “glitches” on my blog ever since my transfer from Blogger to WordPress last summer and it has been very frustrating. I was able to figure out a lot of things on my own but there were certain problems that “Googling it” just couldn’t solve for me. In addition to the glitches, I wanted a lighter, fresher look for my blog. I really liked my previous header and the general layout of my blog. It was a lot of work and I created myself with virtually NO technical knowledge (pat on the back), but it seemed a bit old and “heavy”. It was time to make an Old Thing New.

Enter Mr. OTN, my knight in shining armor! I virtually have NO budget for blogging but I do have a husband who doesn’t like to see me struggle. It was at his urging that I finally decided to pay someone to help me out. After looking at some of my favorite blogs and seeing who they used for blog design I chose Julie at Blogger Boutique and I am so happy that I did! Before I met Julie though I have to confess that I tried two other companies that offered help to bloggers. The first one didn’t charge much at all and I got a step-by-step tutorial that I had a hard time following. When their steps didn’t work on my computer they couldn’t help me. The second one charged a little more and actually transferred my blog from Blogger to WP but I was left with a lot of things that didn’t work. I emailed and emailed for follow-up help, all to no avail. I was willing to pay anything to get things working but never heard back. All this to say that it is better to pay a little more and find someone who others have had a good working relationship with before putting money into your blog.

favicon So the process began with Julie setting up a Basecamp account where we were able to email back and forth to come up with the blog design. First she sent me a questionnaire asking me what other blogs I liked and why, what my favorite colors were, what I’d like my layout to look like, etc. Then she went to work and came up with this beautiful style board. I loved it right away. She understood what I was looking for on the very first try.

Next came the creation of my header from pictures I uploaded to our Basecamp account. I sent Julie a large selection of pictures and asked her to choose which ones looked best together. Again, she captured the essence of my blog. Farmhouse Glam is my style. Can you see it here?

Then came my Facebook cover page . . .

. . . and here is my new blog button. So pretty.

The design is wonderful, the layout is wonderful and I love the slider across the top of my blog where recent posts can be seen. I’d better get to work on some new posts now so you don’t have to keep looking at holidays long past! A great big thank you to Julie at Blogger Boutique.

Blessings to you all,

WP Transfer Complete & an Old World Paint Technique Tutorial

August 20, 2013 by Patti 7 Comments

Whew! The Blogger to WordPress transfer is complete and I’m attempting my very first post on WordPress. There is a story behind why I decided to switch to a self-hosted WP site. The short version being that I woke up one day, logged on to my computer and when I tried to access my blog all I saw was a message shouting at me, “This content has been removed”! There was a moment of heart dropping terror, followed by a frantic Internet search for answers, followed by a resigned, “Oh well, I’ve only lost over a years worth of hard work . . . ! For some unknown reason, my blog came back after a few hours and I decided that the WP transfer I’d been talking about needed to happen sooner rather than later. Now, I don’t want to badmouth Blogger. I love Google and I use it every day. Let’s just suffice to say that with a self-hosted site no one can shut me down. What do you think Mr. OTN, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

So let’s get started with my first post. I’ll begin by adding a picture right here:

Hey! It came up! I must admit that figuring out how to size this picture took a bit of time but once I got the settings plugged in all of the other pics came up just the size I wanted them. So, what do you think of this “plasterish” piece of wall art I found at Goodwill? The original $49.99 price tag was still on it but I only paid $6.99. The color was a little dirty looking so I thought it might be fun to try using Gesso to create the Old World Finish that the amazing Rosemary at Villa Barnes is so adept at. I followed her step-by-step instructions.

I began by painting over the grime with Home Made Chalk Paint Recipe #3 in the color Myth by Behr Paints . You can find that recipe HERE.

Then I slathered on the Gesso (this product is used to prepare canvas and other surfaces to receive paint and can be found at any craft supply store).

I wiped it off before it could dry with an old t-shirt, leaving behind the Gesso that had settled into the crevices.

So simple and the look is totally different, don’t you think?

I think it now looks more like a piece of carved stone than plaster.

She looks so pretty behind my kitchen stove but alas, she cannot stay. This is just one more thing that will go along with me to the French Flea.

The contents of my booth are growing one item at a time.

Okay, well my first post in WP was a little time consuming but not too bad, especially since it was just little ol’ me trying to figure things out all by myself! There are still a few bugs to work out and there will definitely be a lot of new things to learn, just like there was with Blogger. I’m still trying to get used to my new look but that is something I can easily play around with (believe me, I’ve changed the background and script color dozens of times already). One feature I LOVE is that all my posts are truncated on the Home Page so that you can scroll down and see snippets of previous posts along with a thumbnail pic, and a button to “read more”.

All the credit for the Blogger to WP transfer goes to Kristi Linauer of Addicted2Decorating (Yay Kristi!). The whole process took her only one evening! The time that has elapsed since then has been me, wading through WP trying to figure things out. I’ve actually been able to customize several things all by myself. It’s funny . . . I always tell people that I’m not computer savvy because of my being of an older vintage . . . but now . . . what once seemed so foreign to me is really beginning to click. When I talk to other people (even young people) about HTML, widgets, etc. they often give me a blank look. I think I’m going to have to stop declaring myself a non-techy! WP really isn’t harder, it is just different, and the options for customizing my blog are endless. I’m sure I’ll be asking Kristi to fine tune a few things for me along the way but I’m feeling really good about becoming somewhat of a DIYer on the computer 🙂

Blessings to you,

P.S. I’m still trying to figure out how to get comments to show up in my email so I can respond directly. Please be patient with me as I’m really not intentionally ignoring you!
