A Sweet Purchase & My Meeting With a Superstar Blogger!

June 6, 2015 by Patti 18 Comments

Have you ever found that perfect “something” for your home? You really, REALLY wanted it until you began to feel like maybe you wanted it too much? Have you ever questioned whether your desire for things was out of balance with what is really important in life?

I left you hanging earlier this week with my post about being on the verge of something exciting thanks to my husband’s desire to make me happy.

My blog friend Sherry at No Minimalist Here, has recently downsized and has been having a virtual garage sale of items from her own home. THIS painting became the object of my desire! I have always loved this painting on the header of Sherry’s blog. The colors are so soothing and, in fact, as mentioned in a previous post, Sherry’s blog header was the color inspiration for my living room.

When I saw that this painting was up for sale I immediately began to yearn for it. I drooled, I swooned, I nearly fainted over it. Okay, so I’m exaggerating, but I had a strong desire to purchase this painting for my “work in process” dining room. The problem is that Sherry lives in Florida and I live in South Carolina (an 8 hour drive) and shipping would be too expensive. After obsessing on this painting for awhile I began to reevaluate my painting lust, especially as I began to think about all that I have and weighed that against what is really important in life. I felt convicted and decided that I needed to give it up. I prayed. I thanked God and I closed that door.

“When are we going to take our road trip?,” hubby asked one morning last week.

“Whaaaa?”

“I think we should head out Monday morning.”

Lesson learned: Sometimes you have to give something up before it can become yours.

So here I am with Sherry, Superstar Blogger at No Minimalist Here!

Forgive me if I gush but Sherry’s blog is one of the first blogs I followed and you can’t believe how excited this (then) newbie blogger was when she followed me back! That was in the days when I reported every follow to my patient husband and tolerant daughters until it got to the point where they thought I had gone “blog crazy”.

I adore Sherry’s style and her blog is a never ending source of inspiration. I never dreamed that I’d have the opportunity to meet her and even be invited into her home. I had to restrain myself from prattling on and on about every little thing I saw as she gave us the tour (not so sure I did very well with that). The funny thing to me was, that my husband also gushed over Sherry’s home. He even took my camera from me and started taking pictures!

This is one of Sherry and I standing in front of her Trumeau mirror flanked by the sea fans that she dyes herself.

Here we are in Sherry’s dining room with the painting behind us. The history of this canvas is that it is a 19th century painting that originally hung in Jamestown Plantation in Virginia. What a beautiful conversation piece it will be in my dining room. I wonder what the story will sound like? Will I talk about it’s historic roots or will I talk more about meeting the beautiful and gracious Sherry and the story behind how the picture came to belong to me? History runs deep.

So guess what I’ve been plugging away at (with 1-1/2 hands) since we got back from our whirlwind trip to Florida? Preparing my dining room for new wallpaper.

The room had two layers of wallpaper. The first one came off easily. The second had been applied directly to the sheet rock without proper preparation (sizing), and when I began to remove it it took the top layer of the sheet rock right off. That was several months ago and it has lived that way until now.

Without renewed motivation this past couple of days I sanded away the torn paper . . .

. . . and applied a skim coat of joint compound. After it dried I used a sanding block to knock down the rough surfaces, wiped off the dust with a damp rag and left it to air dry.

My next step will be to roll on a primer that is specially formulated for wallpaper. I’m pushing through tonight because I have company coming from Washington State this upcoming week and may not get back to it for awhile. Hmmm . . . unless I can get my company to assist in the wallpapering. 3- 1/2 hands are always better than 1- 1/2 hands.

On the way home from Florida Mr. OTN said to me, “You know we did this because I love you right?”

I knew.

Blessings,

My Signature

Welcome to My Favorite Room - The Screened Porch!

November 5, 2014 by Patti 22 Comments

When I saw this room I was a goner. It was the first room I walked into at our new house and after seeing it I no longer cared what the rest of the house looked like.

I was smitten with The Screened Porch.

Buffet and Screened Room 038

For a long time I’d been rather jealous of those who lived in the South. You see, they got to have these beautiful screened porches and I didn’t. Not that I didn’t try to talk Mr. OTN into adding one onto our lake house.

It always came down to practicality though as really, how many months of the year would we be able to use a screened room in the Pacific NW? So when we decided to make the move south, a screened porch was HIGH on my “Must Have” list and this is the room that cemented the deal for me. Lucky for Mr. OTN the rest of the house was perfect for us as well!

The former owners, Mr. and Mrs F. told us they used to begin and end every day in this room. Now . . . here it is November . . . and we are still enjoying afternoons on the porch (yesterday it was 72). In negotiating for the house we were able to have included in the price all of the screened room furniture, as well as some of the interior furniture. This worked out perfectly for us because we had to sell a lot of our old furniture to keep the moving company costs down.
Isn’t the view of the yard beautiful? It may not be the same view we had at our lake house but it is still pretty wonderful.
At first we were talking about putting a pool in here . . . something to make up for losing our lake view.We may add a water feature in the future, for the sound it makes, but we are loving looking out at the trees so much that we don’t really feel the urge to tear things up to make room for a pool.
You may recognize these bottles and some of the other things we’ve decorated the porch with from our lake house and also our old guest cottage at the lake.
I always used some coastal decor in my summer decorating (you can take a look back HERE) and our guest cottage was ALL coastal (if you missed that remodel you can view it HERE). I knew when I saw this screened porth that it would be the room I would fill with happy west coast memories! Can you believe these vaulted bead board ceilings? LOVE!This is the view that captures me when I lay my head back to rest.
Now for a few close ups of some of my west coast decor transformed to east coast decor!

As you can see, the dogs have made the transition with no difficulties at all. Cozy loves nap time on the porch.Sasha keeps an eye out for chipmunks or squirrels who might invade her territory.Say what???

Even old girl Snoopy, who is almost 17 and doesn’t do much but sleep, is happy here on the porch.

The porch is indeed my happy place. It is the place I go to find total peace . . . but . . .

. . . anyone who knows me well knows that I have a gazillion ideas for this space. I’ve run them by Mr OTN and he just shakes his head. “Not right away”, I tell him, knowing that he is still reeling from the cross country move and a new job! “Eventually . . . little changes over time . . . “, I assure him.

He just rolls his blue eyes and smiles.
So blog friends . . . here are my ideas! I’m just certain that this room would be even more wonderful if we added a few more things to enhance the coastal feel:

A Sky Blue Ceiling

A Corner Fireplace Made of Natural Stone

Brightly Patterned Pillows . . . LOTS of them!

A Gray Wash on the Floor

A Large Patterned Rug to Pull it all Together

What do you think? It definitely won’t happen right away. We still have plenty to do just getting settled into our new home and community.

Hmmm . . . maybe I’ll go grab an afghan and spend some time mulling over my ideas . . . right here in my favorite room.

Blessings,

Shabby Kitchen Table . . . You’ve Stolen my Heart!

August 5, 2014 by Patti 24 Comments

My Shabby Kitchen Table has been used in many a photo shoot here at Old Things New, but I don’t believe she’s ever had her very own feature! I guess it’s about time since this was one of the first pieces I ever painted with chalk paint.

Vintage Kitchen Table (fold-in leaf) 006She is a great table with lovely legs!

I recognized her potential right away even when I first found her painted gold and sealed with grime!

I was so excited to bring her home and give her a fresh new look.

The best thing about this dining table is that she easily goes from being a table for four . . .

. . . to a table for six, simply by pulling up the built in leaf!

It is always so hard to find a place to store table leaves when they aren’t in use. I think whoever came up with this idea was simply brilliant!

This was another paint project that was done by layering and mixing different colors of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint . . .

. . . then distressing with a damp cloth before the paint dried completely . . .

. . . and distressing a little more with a sanding sponge before sealing with wax.

I was so pleased with the way the layered colors came out and the soft sheen of the wax.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this little dining table and she has been perfect for our lake house. Since we’re moving cross country though, and need to lighten our load, she was sold at our flash garage sale last weekend. Note: We’ve found that cross country moving expenses are unbelievably high and I’m sad that I’ve had to part with quite a bit of furniture. The upside is that I will be doing a lot of thrifting and antiquing once we get to our new home. Plenty of future material for Old Things New!

It feels sorta funny (if funny qualifies as a feeling) to let go of this shabby kitchen table. I think even more so because as I look at this table I remember the many faces that have sat around it over the past several years. Parents, children, sisters and brothers, friends both old and new, my dear crafting buddies, some amazing pastors and leaders, Freedom Session facilitators and even many of our FS participants, who have poured out their hearts right here at this table.

Wow . . . I don’t think there is a single piece of furniture that holds my heart quite as strongly as my shabby little kitchen table. I can only hope and pray that her new family will create as many fond memories around this table as we have.

Blessings,

My Signature-001

Summer Decorating at Our Lake House

July 20, 2014 by Patti 19 Comments

So what am I doing spending time decorating my house when I should be packing for our upcoming move to Greenville? I know, right? But when I saw Linda of Coastal Charm‘s recent post sharing her Coastal Vignette I just had to dig out my own coastal decor to do a little summer decorating at our lake house. I need to get back to packing so I won’t talk much, just share my pictures. Let’s start in my living room with the addition of a few coastal touches, some things old and some things new.

Coastal Decor 091Summer pillow covers replaced heavier covers for my entry hall bench and other living room furniture.

Coastal Decor 083

Here, a sea fan I bought last year from Sherry at No Minimalist Here.

An old tool box I also bought last year and added a driftwood handle to. It is filled now with a collection of things from the sea.

Coastal Decor 002

My giant Japanese float atop my kitchen cabinets.

My frog sugar and creamer always make me smile. Love their colors!

And now for several shots of my table centerpiece made up of a random collection of items.

Coastal Decor 036Coastal Decor 002 (2)bWhere is your happy place in summer? Is it the mountains, camping in the woods, poolside or simply sitting on your front porch?

Whether it be at the lake or beside the sea, The Beach is my Happy Place!
