Dried Roses & Moss Valentine’s Day Heart

January 20, 2017 by Patti 21 Comments

How do you fill the dark space between the shiny bright Christmas season and the glorious colors of Spring?

My house was feeling a little empty yesterday so I made a trip to Home Depot.  As I walked through their quiet nursery department the only flowers they had for sale were Winter Pansies and Flowering kale. That would do!

So I picked up a few pots and came home to arrange them in my vintage strawberry crate.

The cool colors of these plants are perfect for the Winter season.

That project done, my creative juices were still flowing so, not wanting to do any “real” work, I dug through a few boxes and put together this little Valentine’s Day heart.

This was made with dried roses that I often find at the grocery store for $12 for three dozen. Thank you Bi-Lo!

Sometimes I display my roses in vases but, more often than not, I hang them to dry for future use.

I’m sure Mr. OTN wonders at this practice but he never says a word.

He is one good man 😉

My favorite roses to buy are brightly colored ones as they dry prettier than pastels, which can turn brownish in color.

I’ve also been known to collect and dry moss from my yard, especially when we lived in the rainy Pacific NW.

With supplies gathered, I glued both purchased and collected moss to a small wooden heart that I had on hand (you could easily cut one out of heavy cardboard).

The dried roses were then randomly glued in a heart shape atop the moss.

A very simple and super sweet,

Valentine’s Day Heart from me to YOU!

A Junky, Mossy, Lacy, Easter Centerpiece!

April 14, 2014 by Patti 23 Comments

Easter Centerpiece 009Fresh Spring flowers.  A mix of hydrangeas, tulips and heather.

For an Easter Centerpiece does it get any better than that?

Easter Centerpiece 019Maybe . . . if you add in some wonderful vintage “junk” . . .

. . .  like old lace, a faded children’s book, an ironstone bowl and an old wooden strawberry crate.

Easter Centerpiece 045Then gather up some other items from Easter’s past, like decoupaged eggs . . .

Easter Centerpiece 007. . . and these adorable nesting bunnies.

Easter Centerpiece 004

Easter Centerpiece 001Easter Centerpiece 029I wish I could say the flowers were from my yard but the only thing blooming this early is my heather.  I gathered together an assortment of my favorite blooms from the floral department of my local grocery store and created a custom arrangement.

Easter Centerpiece 035For a period of time (when my kids were at home) I was doing this every week.  Somehow I got out of the habit.

Easter Centerpiece 036  It is an inexpensive way of treating oneself and I think I need to reestablish this old routine.  Flowers for Mr. OTN!  Yes, I’m sure he would agree 🙂

Easter Table Centerpiece 004As a final touch I added a couple of crystal candlesticks . . .

Easter Table Centerpiece 003. . . and placed it all atop a table runner made of moss.

Easter Centerpiece 056Here is one final view looking down from above through my “Wreathed” Chandy.

Isaiah 43:19 KJV – “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”

Awww . . . the season of Spring.  New things on the horizon.  I wonder what they will be?

Blessings,

My Signature-001

Creating a Spring Topiary

April 11, 2014 by Patti 15 Comments

Do you see it?  It’s the sun streaming in through my windows and bringing it’s warm touch into my home!

It isn’t full-on sunshine, but the muted early morning glow of a sun that hasn’t fully burned off the fog.  But it’s enough!  Enough to make me know that Spring is finally here.  Time for something new.  New life . . . green and growing things . . . bunnies in the yard . . . rhodie blooms opening wide . . .  fresh new decor around the house . . .  and time to wash the windows!

Topiary 013We took a trip to Hobby Lobby on Monday (LOVE) where I picked up some supplies to put together a Spring Topiary.  Here is what I used:

Moss Cross 008A pre-made topiary form and a willow ball.

Moss Cross 010Some greenery (though I love the dark green color of boxwood I chose a lighter shade for Spring as I can always change it out with the seasons).

Moss Cross 011And this is how I put it all together:

I began by stretching the willow ball to create a hole large enough to put the topiary ball through.  Don’t worry, you’ll be able to pull it back together easily when you’re finished.  After that I simply began tucking sprigs of greenery into the willow ball, weaving them over and under the willow branches to secure them in place.

Topiary 001I chose not to completely cover the ball as I like the willow branches showing through a bit (just my preference).

Topiary 003To keep the ball from being wobbly I tucked some moss up and around the styrofoam ball inside.  I also like the way the moss looks peeking through the branches and the greenery.

Topiary beforeThis is what I started with, the dusty Old Thing that I no longer had use for.  I liked the pot though and I kept wondering what I could do with it to make it New.  I thought of making one of those metal orbs, or using a BIG ball of boxwood to place on top, but I finally decided on a Spring Topiary.

Topiary 004I’m not sure that I’ll leave the pot as it is.  It might look nice painted up with a bit of chalk paint.  Old White or Graphite?  What are your thoughts?

Topiary 008Perhaps I could even add a little fleur de lis?

Topiary 010I added some moss around the base of the topiary and a flowering branch “wreath” . . .

Topiary 011 . . . just for the Spring.

Topiary 014It adds a cheery touch to this sitting area off my kitchen . . .

Topiary 016. . . collecting rays of light and making this corner such a happy place to be.

Topiary 017Awww . . . the colors of Spring.

I am so glad you stopped by to see me today and I hope you are feeling the joy of Spring wherever you happen to live.

Blessings,

Mossing Around With Baskets

April 1, 2014 by Patti 19 Comments

1-Mossy Basket 030

Do you have any old baskets hanging around your house that you don’t know what to do with?

You know, the kind that came to you all wrapped in pretty cellophane and filled with yummy treats . . . but now sit empty on a closet floor.

Or perhaps you still have some of those baskets that used to hang in decorative groupings on your kitchen walls . . . or marched across the top of your kitchen cabinets!

(I’m thinking back to the country decor of the late 70’s, early 80’s here and I hope I don’t offend anyone if your baskets are still adorning your walls or your cabinets.  As far as I know that may even be back in style)!

01-Mossy Basket 001

Perhaps you have a stray basket like this one.  It’s cute but not big enough to hold swags of flowers, or to use as a laundry basket, or sit on top of an armoire.

This little basket has been sitting out on my front porch for the past year.  At times it’s been filled with a few seashells that came home with me from the beach, or moss and sticks and other treasures picked up while out walking the neighborhood.  In Winter it held a few pinecones and red berries.

So now it’s Spring and time to add something new to my basket.  When I saw that it was growing a bit of it’s own moss I decided why not help it out?  Thus, the birth of an idea:  Mossing Around With Baskets!

02-Mossy Basket 005

Now if you live in a place like I do, you can take a walk through the neighborhood to collect your moss.  It is on the trees and the sidewalks.  It is on deck railings and patios.

1-Moss 002I actually found the greatest moss ever on top of this outhouse!  Oh how I wanted to trespass and do some moss collecting.

Haha! I feel a joke coming on here . . . You know you’re a redneck if . . . your neighbor doesn’t have the moss cleaned off the roof of his outhouse!

(Just to clarify, we live on a lake that used to be mostly summer cottages and this is a remnant of that time.  We ourselves don’t have an outhouse . . . but hmmm . . .  we do live on a gravel road . . .)

ANYHOO, if you live in a drier climate you can always head down to your local craft store and pick up a bag of moss.

05-Mossy Basket 009

This is such a simple project and it takes about ten minutes to complete.  You simply begin by pulling your moss apart into strips like this.

04-Mossy Basket 008

Then start poking it into the sides of your basket.  I actually had my glue gun out and ready to go but I found that this basket had large enough gaps that the moss held firm when poked into the holes with my thumbnail.

03-Mossy Basket 007

06-Mossy Basket 012

I just kept adding moss wherever there were holes to poke it into.

07-Mossy Basket 018

And that was it!

08-Mossy Basket 020

The bonus is that even the inside of the basket has a little moss peeking through.

09-Mossy Basket 025

11-Mossy Basket 027

10-Mossy Basket 026So what do you think?  Cute yes?

12-Mossy Basket 029

When you’re finished you can fill your basket with whatever Easter or other Spring décor you have around the house.  Here I’ve added some Spanish moss and eggs that I decoupaged last year.  The tutorial can be found for the large egg HERE and for the smaller eggs HERE.

5-Mossy Basket 011

My old basket is back out on my front porch, sitting on an old chair.  I tucked in a few sprigs of heather cut from my yard.

3-Mossy Basket 006

2-Mossy Basket 003

1-Mossy Basket 001

I absolutely love simple projects like this one and I think my old leftover basket looks so happy now that it is all filled up and made new again!

1-Mossy Basket 008

What ideas do you have for using old baskets?  I’d really love to hear!

If you liked this post please share it with a friend 🙂
