Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House

November 27, 2013 by Patti 8 Comments

So, a couple of weeks ago I had this hair brained idea. Our guest cottage became open unexpectedly, leaving us with just a few weeks before the arrival of our Christmas visitors. Not being one to waste a good opportunity I asked Mr. OTN if we (my friend Linda and I) could host an Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House (wow, that’s a mouthful) and sell some of the things we’ve been working on. Knowing that this would mean a bit of craziness around our house he gave us the go ahead (love him!) and we started working on getting it together this week. Actually, we started getting it together just yesterday as we were busy with another bazaar last weekend. I’ll give you all the details at the end of the post but for now, here are some of the items we’ll be selling:

Seasonal decor . . .

Purses and jewelry . . .

Some mod decor . . .

A coastal themed room . . . after all, that is the decor of our little cottage . . .

A bit of French Country . . .

This is one of the pieces Linda’s been working on with a special paint that gives a patina’d metal effect to just about anything . . .

And lots of miscellaneous pretties . . .

Finally, I’m selling some of my Patti’s Perfect Paint Powder that can be mixed with any latex paint to create a homemade chalk paint. After testing many home made chalk paint recipes this is the one I find to be superior. I’ve packaged some up some to sell locally and, who knows, maybe I’ll find a market it for it on my blog as well. I’ll be demonstrating how it works while I sell!

So, here are all the details. Our Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House (that is STILL a mouthful) will be held this Friday and Saturday from 9-3. I would love for you to come on by if you are in the area. Along with our own handcrafted items we have a couple of friends who’ve contributed to our “store”. Our cottage by the lake is THE place to be on Black Friday (and Saturday). We’d love for you to come have a cup of hot chocolate and stick around awhile for a little visit.

A Stripey Makeover for a Vintage Suitcase

September 24, 2013 by Patti 27 Comments

I love the look of old trunks and suitcases and I’ve been wanting to do a vintage suitcase makeover for some time now. I must admit that mine in a knockoff of one I saw on another blog, but I can’t remember exactly where. Can anyone help me with that? Maybe it’s you and I’d love to give you credit. The vintage suitcase I used came from my in-laws garage sale and it is exactly like one that my parents had when I was a child. This made it especially appealing to me. I started by taping it off for the stripes and began painting, using two colors of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Old White and Versailles. The pictures that I decoupaged onto the suitcase came from The Graphics Fairy website, of course. The number of my projects that have revolved around that website I can’t even say!

To age the graphics a bit I dipped them in strong coffee and laid them out on a foil-lined cookie sheet. I “baked” them at 200 degrees for about 4 minutes (watching them closely to avoid a fire) and then laid them out on a wire rack to finish drying.

After Mod Podging the graphics in place I sealed everything with two coats of MinWax Polycrylic. Funny, Mr. OTN liked the color combo and he thought it looked cool with the graphics applied but he was VERY concerned that it was no longer useful as a piece of luggage, “It will be ruined if someone uses it for travel!” I patiently explained to him that this isn’t meant to be used as a piece of luggage anymore but as a piece of home decor.

“Why are you staging it for pictures like it’s going on a trip if it’s no longer luggage?”, I can hear Mr. OTN thinking in his head. I haven’t come up with a good answer for him yet. If I don’t sell this I’d better find something to do with it in my home. Maybe I’ll pad the inside and make it a bed for the dogs . . . that would make Mr. OTN happy . . . or it could be stacked with some other pieces of luggage and used as a side table in his office.

I actually kinda like it just sitting in my front entryway looking like some interesting guests have just arrived for a stay. What are your ideas? What would you do with this suitcase? Does it even really need to have a purpose?

Blessings to you,

Generation Vintage Fall Open House

September 18, 2013 by Patti Leave a Comment

Generation Vintage was one of the many vendors I met at last weekend’s French Flea Market. They are hosting an Open House this weekend at their shop and studio and I want to encourage you to pay them a visit if you are in the Olympia area. These ladies are so sweet and they are a three generation team of mom (Keri) , daughter (Victoria) and baby girl (Aubrey)! I’m trying to figure out how to slip away from the classes Mr. OTN and I are teaching all day Saturday. Hmmm . . . maybe we’ll finish up in enough time to rush on over there!

So here are just a few pictures I took of their space at the French Flea (the lighting was really bad so please excuse the quality).

Refurbished furniture,

Vintage finds,

Cool retro stuff,

. . . and repurposed items . . . that’s what you’ll find at Generation Vintage‘s Fall Open House. So grab a girlfriend (or your husband if you have a shopper like mine) and enjoy browsing while sipping on a cup of hot spiced cider.

Victoria and her adorable Aubrey.

Wishing you great success at your exciting event ladies.

Blessings,

WP Transfer Complete & an Old World Paint Technique Tutorial

August 20, 2013 by Patti 7 Comments

Whew! The Blogger to WordPress transfer is complete and I’m attempting my very first post on WordPress. There is a story behind why I decided to switch to a self-hosted WP site. The short version being that I woke up one day, logged on to my computer and when I tried to access my blog all I saw was a message shouting at me, “This content has been removed”! There was a moment of heart dropping terror, followed by a frantic Internet search for answers, followed by a resigned, “Oh well, I’ve only lost over a years worth of hard work . . . ! For some unknown reason, my blog came back after a few hours and I decided that the WP transfer I’d been talking about needed to happen sooner rather than later. Now, I don’t want to badmouth Blogger. I love Google and I use it every day. Let’s just suffice to say that with a self-hosted site no one can shut me down. What do you think Mr. OTN, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

So let’s get started with my first post. I’ll begin by adding a picture right here:

Hey! It came up! I must admit that figuring out how to size this picture took a bit of time but once I got the settings plugged in all of the other pics came up just the size I wanted them. So, what do you think of this “plasterish” piece of wall art I found at Goodwill? The original $49.99 price tag was still on it but I only paid $6.99. The color was a little dirty looking so I thought it might be fun to try using Gesso to create the Old World Finish that the amazing Rosemary at Villa Barnes is so adept at. I followed her step-by-step instructions.

I began by painting over the grime with Home Made Chalk Paint Recipe #3 in the color Myth by Behr Paints . You can find that recipe HERE.

Then I slathered on the Gesso (this product is used to prepare canvas and other surfaces to receive paint and can be found at any craft supply store).

I wiped it off before it could dry with an old t-shirt, leaving behind the Gesso that had settled into the crevices.

So simple and the look is totally different, don’t you think?

I think it now looks more like a piece of carved stone than plaster.

She looks so pretty behind my kitchen stove but alas, she cannot stay. This is just one more thing that will go along with me to the French Flea.

The contents of my booth are growing one item at a time.

Okay, well my first post in WP was a little time consuming but not too bad, especially since it was just little ol’ me trying to figure things out all by myself! There are still a few bugs to work out and there will definitely be a lot of new things to learn, just like there was with Blogger. I’m still trying to get used to my new look but that is something I can easily play around with (believe me, I’ve changed the background and script color dozens of times already). One feature I LOVE is that all my posts are truncated on the Home Page so that you can scroll down and see snippets of previous posts along with a thumbnail pic, and a button to “read more”.

All the credit for the Blogger to WP transfer goes to Kristi Linauer of Addicted2Decorating (Yay Kristi!). The whole process took her only one evening! The time that has elapsed since then has been me, wading through WP trying to figure things out. I’ve actually been able to customize several things all by myself. It’s funny . . . I always tell people that I’m not computer savvy because of my being of an older vintage . . . but now . . . what once seemed so foreign to me is really beginning to click. When I talk to other people (even young people) about HTML, widgets, etc. they often give me a blank look. I think I’m going to have to stop declaring myself a non-techy! WP really isn’t harder, it is just different, and the options for customizing my blog are endless. I’m sure I’ll be asking Kristi to fine tune a few things for me along the way but I’m feeling really good about becoming somewhat of a DIYer on the computer 🙂

Blessings to you,

P.S. I’m still trying to figure out how to get comments to show up in my email so I can respond directly. Please be patient with me as I’m really not intentionally ignoring you!
