An Unexpected Gift Outside my Door & Lessons Learned

June 27, 2015 by Patti 23 Comments

“This thing isn’t working out too well,” declared Mr. OTN after being jabbed in the side of the face for the umteenth time by a wayward piece of faux lavender.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with it.  I keep pushing the flowers back in place and they keep getting all messed up,” my answer, as I once again began rearranging the floral arrangement on our front door.

Spring Basket on Front Door 029

I loved THIS Spring Floral Arrangement.  I took pictures of it and blogged about it and lots of other people liked it too!  So what WAS wrong with it?

A couple of times I chalked up the mysteriously mutilated arrangement to inclement weather, high winds and rain . . . but then I would go out to the porch on a perfectly calm Spring day and find it all messed up again.

While fighting the daily battle with the mysteriously out-of-control flower arrangement, different people would stop by for a visit and when they did we would open the door really, REALLY wide so they could get through the opening without having to dodge around the wild branches sticking straight out from the door.  I would apologize, straighten everything up again and invite my friends inside.

You’d think I would’ve suspected something . . . the day I opened the front door and a bird whooshed right past my head into the dining room.  The bird was terrified and I wasn’t feeling too brave either (my first horror movie was The Birds) but after a chase and a scream and a lot of barking by the dogs, I opened the front door wide while we retreated to the back of the house, to wait for the bird to leave.  She did.

You’d think I would’ve suspected something . . . when I went out to clean up the front porch and it was littered with bits of dried leaves and twigs (in the Spring?), as well as a few birdy droppings.

Finally . . . there came the day when a very tall man rang the doorbell.  Hubby and I were expecting him so we went to the front door together and I did my usual thing of opening the door really, really wide so this stranger wouldn’t receive a poke to the eye as he came inside.

He didn’t step over the threshold though.  He pointed his finger at my once pretty floral arrangement (was he about to point out what an unholy mess it was?) and said,

Bird's Nest 1

“Is that a bird’s nest?”

And yes.  It was.  A sweet little bird’s nest built right into my flower arrangement.  Hidden from my too-short-to-see view behind the flowers in front.

Bird's Nest 039

We let it be after that and decided to wait until we were sure that the nest was empty.  I only hoped I hadn’t crushed any eggs in all my pushing and shoving and rearranging of flowers that would never stay in place.

Bird's nest 029

Finally yesterday, when I felt that any baby birds would by now have safely flown the nest, I carefully began removing flowers to reveal this precious little nest (and . . . PHEW . . . no evidence of broken eggs!).  If I was thinking of doing something new and different for my summer door decor those ideas flew right out of my head as I realized that this was the best door arrangement ever!

Bird's nest 027

I tucked couple of flowers back in to fill space around the nest and it was done!  It was enough.  It was and was PERFECT!

If I was a little impressed with my floral arrangement before this one far exceeds my own attempts at beauty.

Bird's Nest 041

Lessons learned:

Sometimes when frustrations come into our lives and we keep trying to “fix it” to no avail, it might be that God is in the midst of building something new.

Sometimes our very best attempts, the things we take pride in, are overshadowed by that which is simple.

Sometimes the best gifts aren’t the showiest or the most expensive, but those that are absolutely free!

Finally. . . don’t be short-sighted (look up, look down, look all around) and don’t miss out on the wonder that surrounds you!

Blessings,

My Secret to Great Looking Arrangements Using Faux Flowers

March 23, 2015 by Patti 28 Comments

I am thifty. Yes I am.  But I also like my Faux Floral Arrangements to look good!  And while I’d love for my home to be filled with fresh flowers all the time, I don’t have the budget to replenish them each week.

Do you want to know My Secret to Creating Great Looking Arrangements Using Faux Flowers?  In this post I’ll share with you the Spring Basket I just put together for my front door.

Spring Basket on Front Door 029

Spring Basket on Front Door 011

Spring Basket on Front Door 006

I started with a door basket made from loosely woven vines and lined it with some sheet moss.

Spring Basket on Front Door 028a

Then I tucked in some really nice looking purple and pink sprigs of faux lavender purchased at Michael’s, and some little sprigs of white flowers from my own stash.  The basket, the moss, and the flowers were, so far, very inexpensive . . . especially with coupons. I only shop Michael’s with coupons and I have the store App loaded onto my iPhone so I never forget my coupon at home.

Spring Basket on Front Door 003

The next addition to my basket, and the crowning glory, were three gorgeous faux tulips.

Spring Basket on Front Door 019

Buying a few realistic flowers to add to the less expensive flowers IS my SECRET to creating a gorgeous arrangement.

Spring Basket on Front Door 004

Having a few stunningly beautiful flowers tucked into an arrangement really makes it special, as they draw your eye directly to their beauty.  These particular tulips look so real that you want to touch them and, when you do, they even feel real!

Spring Basket on Front Door 020

While realistic looking faux flowers can be expensive, I only needed three for this smallish basket, and they will last for years to come.

Spring Basket on Front Door 017

Last year I got to go to the LA Flower Market (pics HERE).  It is HUGE . . . blocks and blocks . . . and the prices are unbelievably LOW (unless you include the airfare to LA).  My local source for faux flowers is Twigs, in Greenville, SC.  Their single stem flowers, swags (like my kitchen swag HERE), and pre-made arrangements are fantastic.  I like to go there just to walk around and soak in the beauty!

So were my beautiful tulips a little expensive?  Yes.  But since I’ll have them for years to come they were, in the end, a very thrifty find. If you liked this post please don’t forget to Pin It!

Now, do you know what would make my door pop even more?  Color!  Yes, I’ve been pinning pretty doors to my Exterior Door Colors Pinterest board for awhile now, so watch for some changes coming up soon!

Happy Spring y’all!

Preserved Boxwood Wreath Tutorial and Other Thrift Store Crafts

March 14, 2015 by Patti 11 Comments

Savvy shopping.  It’s a family tradition . . . passed down from mother to daughter.  My mother never learned to drive but when I got my license you’d better believe she made sure I got a lot of practice . . . and the best way to practice was to drive to shopping destinations all over the greater Seattle area.  One of her favorite places was the gigantic Goodwill Store in downtown Seattle!  It is the biggest thrift store I’ve ever been to and it is amazing!

I don’t know if you know this Savvy Shopping Tip, but thrift stores are the BEST places to shop for seasonal decor . . . and right now they have their Seasonal displays right up front for your shopping pleasure!  Ceramic eggs that have lost their cool?  No problem . . .

Mossy Decoupage Egg

Cover the egg with sheet moss and a bunny graphic and it will be cuter than ever.

Empty plastic eggs from Easter’s past?

Decoupage eggs

They will be beautiful displayed in a basket once they’ve been decoupaged with Spring napkins.

A plain old basket with no pizzaz?

Mossy Basket

Moss it!!! To see the complete tutorials for these adorable projects, click on the links HERE, HERE and HERE.

Some winter decor and our living room 018

All that leads me to the main subject of this post, how to make a Preserved Boxwood Wreath.  My boxwood wreath began it’s life as a grapevine wreath adorned with silk flowers that were well past their prime!  Thrift stores and garage sales are a great source for inexpensive wreaths in need of a makeover.  You only have to look beyond the surface and imagine . . . what . . . might . . .  be . . .

Of course that is the main theme of Old Things New!

Boxwood Wreath 001

Grapevine wreaths are great to work because they are woven together loosely enough that it’s easy to tuck boxwood stems (even silk flowers . . . pretty ones) between the gaps, and their tight woody branches hold your stems in place as you work.

Boxwood Wreath 003

I tucked my individual boxwood pieces into the wreath with each stem going in the same direction.

Boxwood Wreath 002

Then I added green florist’s wire, wrapping it around the wreath several times to hold everything securely in place and to tame unruly branches.  I was careful to hide the wire under branches on the front side of the wreath.

If you prefer a “well-groomed” look to your boxwood you can achieve that by doing a little trimming with pruning shears.  I chose to leave my boxwood just a little bit wild!

For more boxwood ideas you can link back to my Decorating With Preserved Boxwood post HERE.  There you’ll also find the link to where I purchased my preserved boxwood in bulk (the thriftiest way to go by the way).

I don’t want to forget to remind you that Farragoz, the online painting course shown on my sidebar has a LIMITED TIME OFFER for my readers only going through the end of March.  The course, normally offered at $150 is being offered for $99.  This is a great value for this amazing online painting course and the only way to link up to the special offer is to click on the link below.  To read more about the course you can link back to my full post HERE.

I know it’s been a pretty harsh winter for many and I hope it’s beginning to feel more Springlike where you live.  Doing a Spring project sure helps to make it feel like it is a bit closer.  If you enjoyed this post, don’t forget to Pin It or Tweet It!

Decorating With Preserved Boxwood

February 26, 2015 by Patti 17 Comments

Decorating With Preserved Boxwood.

A long cardboard box on the front porch, the zip of the box cutter, rose tissue paper crunching under anxious fingers as it’s pulled away from lush green branches, and awww . . . inhale the sweet scent of boxwood.

Living Room AND Boxwood Wreath 002

These are the little things that make me happy.

Living Room AND Boxwood Wreath 004

I don’t have boxwood bushes in my yard and the cost of buying preserved boxwood wreaths and topiaries can be quite high.  But I have found a great source for preserved boxwood in bulk and it is very reasonable considering how much comes in one box (4.4 pounds is a LOT of boxwood) and how long it lasts.  I’ve had my miniature boxwood wreaths for 1-1/2 years now and they still look like they are fresh cut greens.

Living Room AND Boxwood Wreath 005

Bella Marie is my source for preserved boxwood and I’ve never been disappointed with their product or their service (this is not a paid post by the way).

Living Room AND Boxwood Wreath 008

I like touches of green around my house year round and since I’m not great with houseplants over the long haul (I kill them) (not on purpose) (I love them but they don’t love me), this is a wonderful option for me.  Let me show you some of the different ways I decorate my home with preserved boxwood.  I created this wreath with added wired silver balls for embellishment.  I like the extra touch of color it adds to my display of blue plates in the kitchen.

Living Room AND Boxwood Wreath 012

Here I added a little green to a bouquet of roses purchased at the Charleston Farmer’s Market.  They were handmade by Miz Laura, a Gullah craftsperson we met there.

This is a topiary I created with preserved boxwood (Tutorial HERE).

Some winter decor and our living room 018

This large wreath was simple to make with a recycled grapevine wreath that was once adorned with brightly colored silk flowers.

As you may have noticed in some of my previous posts, I enjoy using touches of boxwood all over my house.

Christmas 2014 041

I have several small wreaths that I’ve used in various places.

Christmas 2014 036

Christmas 2014 021

I also like to use sprigs of boxwood here and there, even more so during the holidays.

I decorate with boxwood year round to add a fresh look of the outdoors to the inside of my home.

Boxwood Decor 002

I’m so happy I bought boxwood in bulk.  Even with all the things I’ve made, my box from Bella Marie still has quite a bit of boxwood left to work with, and I have a lot more ideas running around in my head.  Maybe even some gifts for my friends (wink, wink).

Speaking of gifts (what an amazing segway that was) Farragoz (the online painting course featured on my sidebar) has a SPECIAL OFFER just for my readers, now through the end of March. The course, which is usually priced at $150 will be $99 for this limited time.  I wish you ALL could’ve won the contest I hosted but this is the next best thing! How to make a Spring Wreath for a Chandy

March 25, 2014 by Patti 20 Comments

This is my crystal chandy.  As I’ve shared before, this was the first birthday gift given to me by Mr. OTN in our first home together.  So while I love it “as is”, I find it fun to change it up a bit with the seasons (my favorite was my Christmas Chandy which you can view HERE).

21-Undecorating the Christmas Chandy 033To usher in the warmer weather I’ve created a Spring wreath (of sorts) for my chandy, with flowers purchased at the L.A. Flower market (to read more about the market and see the amazing flowers you can link back HERE).

01-Spring Chandy 001-001I began with two different types of flowering branches.  I have no idea what these flowers are called though I wish I did.  Does anyone know what they might be?

02-Spring Chandy 003-001I laid down three of these pretty green branches first, across the arms of the chandelier.

03-Spring Chandy 005Then I placed three of the white flowering branches on top.

03-Spring Chandy 017After a little twisting (to connect the ends of the branches together) and a little tucking (to hide the bare ends and the wires) . . .

04-Spring Chandy 007. . . VOILA!  A Spring wreath for my chandy!

05-Spring Chandy 008

08-Spring Chandy 013-001You can see in this picture that it is another sunny day on the lake, for a few minutes anyway.  This time of year the weather is so unpredictable and it has been sunny . . . rainy . . . cloudy . . . sunny all day.

18-Spring Chandy 026The shining sun causes the crystals to send off rainbows of color all around the room.  Be still my beating heart!

10-Spring Chandy 021So that’s it.  A Spring Wreath for my Chandy.

12-Spring Chandy 023It was fun decorating her for Spring but I’m already thinking ahead and wondering what her summer decor will be.  Shells perhaps?

Blessings,
