Pollen Proofing the Screened Porch!

April 6, 2016 by Patti 50 Comments

“You don’t know what pollen is until you live in the South.”  That’s what people told me when we were moving here but did I listen?  Of course not!  I used to think that Spring pollen was bad in the Pacific Northwest.  We had not only the yellow pollen that left a gauzy film on our cars but at times it looked like it was snowing outdoors with the cottonwood seed hairs drifting through the air.  HA!  That was amateur stuff compared to the insidious pollen grains that  seep right through the screens on the porch and blanket the furniture in a thick yellow veil.

Screened Porch Curtains 002

It isn’t easily dusted off either.  No, it takes a little elbow grease to remove.

A Pollen Free Screened Porch

That’s why Mr. OTN and I decided that this year we were going to POLLEN PROOF our screened porch.  Well . . . as pollen proof as you can get anyways.

Screened Porch Curtains 001bWe began by reading all the DIY outdoor curtain posts we could find on Pinterest and then set to work.

Screened Porch Curtains 002bWe purchased galvanized plumbing pipe and fittings and spray painted them with Rustoleum’s Oil Rubbed Bronze to prevent rust.  You can see in the above photos that the two types of fittings we used were straight and elbow fittings.  For the corners we installed decorative brackets for support.

Screened Porch Curtains 003bWe placed curtain clips on the rod before screwing the pipes together.  We wanted clips instead of rings for ease of laundering the curtains.

Screened Porch Curtains 002aThese are the painter’s drop cloths that we purchased at Home Depot . . . after purchasing another brand at Lowe’s and finding out that more than half of the drop cloths purchased had horizontal seams through them.  Not a good look.  In the end these cloths turned out to be a much nicer fabric too and this made me extremely happy.

Screened Porch Curtains 007And now some photos of my room with the drop cloths in place.  I haven’t hemmed or ironed them yet as I’m still trying to decide what length I want and also considering various ways to weight the bottom.

Screened Porch Curtains 003I bought some lead weighted cord but it was extremely lightweight, more for sheers.  I also don’t want them so heavy that with a gust of wind they pull off the curtain clips.

Screened Porch Curtains 004I’m leaning toward sewing in some simple chain from the hardware store to weight them or maybe nothing at all.  We don’t have a lot of heavy wind here and I don’t mind the gentle blowing of the curtains.  We did have a windstorm the other day and we simply set our furniture legs on the hems of the drapes.

Screened Porch Curtains 009Once pollen season is over we will throw the drapes open wide and enjoy the full view of our backyard.

Screened Porch Curtains 010We may even take them down for the summer . . . if we don’t decide to sometimes use this as a sleeping porch.

Screened Porch Curtains 023 How fun would that be to camp out in our own backyard?

Screened Porch Curtains 014We might also find them useful in the chill of late Fall when we can close everything up and bring a heater out to the porch for a little afternoon reading . . .

Screened Porch Curtains 018 . . . or even a nap, like Cozy here is considering.

Screened Porch Curtains 019Our screened porch is our very favorite place to JUST BE.

Screened Porch Curtains 027By the way, this is what I use to clip the curtains together when they are closed.

Screened Porch Curtains 028They hold well and are fairly unobtrusive.

Screened Porch Curtains 020And this is what I made to hold them open.  You can bet there will be a “how to” post on that later.

Where are you spending your time this Spring?  Do you have a favorite outdoor place to sit?  I know, many places are still experiencing winter so maybe your favorite Spring place right now is beside a fire in a warm den.

Wherever you are, I hope you’ll take the time to be still and experience being in the here and now.

Blessings,

My Signature

Bunnies, Bunnies, Everywhere!

March 18, 2016 by Patti 11 Comments

To be sure, the bunnies  overrunning my house are more prolific than my writing has been of late!  We spent the first week of March in San Diego and since then I’ve spent much of my time fighting and then recuperating from an influenza virus.  UGH!

“No honey, I did NOT get my flu shot this year but I’m glad you did.”

So today, my words will be few and I’ll simply share a few Spring/Easter vignettes scattered around my house.Easter Decor 002This mama bunny cookie jar adorns my kitchen island, along with a pot of lavender and some gold leafed eggs.

Easter Decor 003Notice baby bunnies peeking out from beneath mama’s skirts.

Easter Decor 004

Easter Decor 043On my kitchen counter is a tray holding another porcelain bunny.

Easter Decor 005Easter Decor 006And one of many nests scattered throughout my house.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 056The den has gone Green for Spring (more pics showing my bookcases HERE).

Easter Decor 017Thrifted and painted candlesticks and silver.

Easter Decor 016Dried hydrangeas from last year’s garden and a DIY moss covered cross.

Easter Decor 013I shared this photo on Instagram of a collection of vintage pocket watches and a tiny bird’s nest.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 047Vintage books abound in my home decor.

Easter Decor 023I found this big bunny in a thrift store last Spring and I’m still debating on whether to leave him “as is” or to paint him.  I’m really loving the grey stone bunnies I’ve seen around the home decor stores.

Easter Decor 022Or maybe I’ll just paint his overalls pink and make him a her!

Easter Decor 011This is my favorite frame because I can print out seasonal pictures from The Graphics Fairy to change it up for each holiday.

Easter Decor 012I’ve added one of my tiny boxwood wreaths behind the glass to frame it.

Easter Decor 027On to my living room and another boxwood wreath hung on a lantern.

Easter Decor 026A lantern that is filled with more bunnies of course.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 027I bought this stuffed bunny a couple of years ago because he looks so real.

Easter Decor 028I love his little chick friends too.

Easter Decor 029

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 033In my dining room an old toolbox filled with lavender sits atop the hutch.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 001A Spring Bouquet in a garden urn adorns the dining table,

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 007with another bird’s nest for good measure.

Easter Decor and Spring Arrangement 036One of my favorite things to create displays in is this large cloche that I’ve filled with Spring goodies.

Easter Decor 035Vintage sheet music with another miniature bird’s nest.

Easter Decor 039A mix of decoupaged eggs and gold leafed eggs.

Easter Decor 038A faux chocolate bunny purchased at Stein Mart.  This, after using a real chocolate bunny in a floral arrangement two years ago and finding it melted down into the flowers one sunny afternoon.

The weather is very Springlike and warm this week in South Carolina and the pollen is beginning to fly.  Hubby and I are working on a solution for keeping the furniture on the screened porch protected from the messy pollen this year.  I’ll let you know how that works out!  I hope you all are well and that you are enjoying the entrance into this new Season, wherever you may live.

Blessings friends,

Bookcases Going Green for Spring!

March 8, 2016 by Patti 21 Comments

I love going on vacation this time of year because when you come home after only a week away there are so many changes.  The temperatures have warmed by 10 degrees, the swelling buds on the trees have begun to explode into flowers, the sun shines brighter, and the birds chirp louder . . . or so it seems.

I enjoy changing out the bookcases in our den with the Seasons.

Since Spring is about to burst forth I’ve added a lot of green accents.

I think it’s pretty great of Mr. OTN to let me rummage through his office for books of green.

Bookcases Going Green 001

This is his favorite room to relax in after a long day at work and he actually takes great delight in my making it a comfortable place for him to come home to.

Bookcases Going Green 018

Do you have a favorite room?  The rooms that we spend the most time in can become kind of messy and neglected but I believe it’s important to take care to make these rooms as welcoming as any other part of the home.  These spaces can be real sanctuaries, places of escape from the outside world.

Is the weather becoming Springlike yet where you live?  Have you begun any Spring cleaning or Spring decorating?  Sometimes we just have to start the ball rolling and wait for the weather to follow!

Almost Spring blessings to you my friends 😉

Spring Bouquet in a Garden Urn

March 1, 2016 by Patti 30 Comments

Spring Arrangement 003Did you read my post about The Lie of Perfectionism a couple of weeks ago?  Yeah well, I may have had to read that again myself before sharing my floral arrangement with you today.  I’ve never taken a flower arranging class in my life but I know the look I like.  I’m pretty sure a professional would take one look at my arrangement and want to fix it for me.  In fact, I did ask the opinion of a friend who has won awards for her floral arrangements and she had some suggestions for me, but after playing around with it a bit more I stayed with what was pleasing to my eye.

Spring Arrangement 002When I look into my dining room, which is several times a day as I go up and down the stairs, I feel happy.

Spring Arrangement 001 The sun streams through the plantation shutters onto my dining room table and reminds me that warm days are right around the corner.

Spring Arrangement 007This large bouquet is filled with some of my favorite flowers and, quite by accident in an attempt to fill a bare spot, a sweet bird’s nest with gold leafed eggs.

Spring Arrangement 008I have neither the time nor the money to create a new arrangement of fresh flowers every week, but over time I’ve invested in some really good faux flowers which I’ve mixed with some really average faux flowers, to create an arrangement that makes me smile.

Spring Arrangement 009A little burlap twisted around the stems of the flowers gives it the shabby touch I adore,

Spring Arrangement 012and a big French garden urn at the base of it all makes it a statement piece.

Spring Arrangement 013Nope, not even near perfect, but Perfectly Imperfect just like me!

Blessings friends 😉

When Life Gives You a Broken Wrist (or a Leaky Birdbath) Plant Succulents!

May 15, 2015 by Patti 32 Comments

Perhaps you’ve noticed that I haven’t been blogging much lately and yes, there is a reason.  I hate to sound whiny here on my blog and I also hate to seem whimpy.  That’s why I waited a week after breaking my wrist before going to the doctor to have it x-rayed.  That’s also why I waited two weeks after the cast came off before going back to the doctor with my suspicion that something wasn’t right.  Pride?  Yeah, maybe.

Feeling more pain after the cast comes off than when it went on is not good.  Not being able to write or type or turn the key in the ignition, or sleep soundly at night because of shooting pain up your arm is bad.  Having your husband tell you to get into the doctor, when your husband is a doctor, is the worst!

I remind myself that a broken wrist is a little thing and how blessed I am compared to people who have really awful things in their lives.  Still, not being able to work on all of the projects I’ve started has left me feeling a bit “down in the dumps” for the past couple of months (losing our SnoopyGirl didn’t help either).

Succulent birdbath prep

Before planting I drilled a few holes in the bottom of the cement birdbath and added rocks to the bottom for drainage as succulents don’t like to remain too moist.

So when life gives you a broken wrist, or a leaky birdbath, the perfect thing to do is plant succulents!  I have been able to do projects that don’t require small motor movement of my right hand and wrist so I’ve been spending a lot of time working in my yard, which is a delight this time of year.  Now . . . since even writing this little bit is painful . . . I’m going to move on and show you the pics I took after planting this old birdbath and thrift store pitcher with succulents.

Succulent birdbath 001

Succulent Birdbath 001a

This is one small corner of my yard where I’ve added color. Beyond the grass is a fenced wooded area with a walking trail.  We plan to add more plantings along the edge of the grass as time goes on in order to create a bit of an enclosed courtyard feeling to our backyard.

Succulent Birdbath 002

Succulent birdbath 011

Over the summer these succulents will grow and begin to overflow this container like they did in the three-tiered succulent planter I did a couple of summers ago.

Super simple and super cute right?  And how handy it was to have a tree right there to wire the pitcher to.

Succulent Birdbath 006

Today I start twice weekly occupational therapy on my frozen wrist.  My faith tells me to pray for healing of my wrist.  I’ve had lots of prayer and I believe that God is healing my hand.  The whiny in me would love for it to be sooner rather than later.

Though I’ve missed sharing what I’m working on with you all I can honestly say that I’m enjoying not having the pressure of hours spent preparing and sharing posts.  As we head into summer my stress meter is lower than it’s been in a long time so perhaps I’m learning a thing or two along the way.  Any maybe, just maybe, God’s timing for healing my hand is the perfect timing 🙂

Though I’m not blogging much right now I AM taking pictures of the things I’m enjoying every day. If you like to share in that, please follow me on Instagram.

Blessings to you until the next time,
