Baby it’s Cold Chalkboard Hearth Bucket

December 8, 2015 by Patti 15 Comments

How in the world did this battered old white bucket with the goofy looking rainbow trout painted on it’s side make it’s way into the moving van and travel all the way across the country with us?  When we were feverishly trying to lighten the load by selling and giving away things of value (like all of my thrifted furniture that was slated for makeover – TEARS) how did this silly bucket make the cut?

Woodland Mantle 042

Perhaps we’ll never know the answer to that question unless maybe, just maybe, it was destined for some purpose all along.  With Christmas right around the corner and some of the prettiest pinecones I’ve ever seen just waiting to be displayed, I took a little walk out to the garage where said bucket jumped right out at me and begged for a makeover.  With a lumpy bottom (Hmmm, sounds familiar) from the water that froze in it one winter when it was the dog dish, this little bucket wasn’t worth much.

Baby it's Cold Bucket 005

Being transformationally inclined I pounded out the dents in the bottom so it would no longer tip sideways.  Then I printed off this free chalkboard art that I found on Pinterest.

Baby it's Cold Bucket 004

That and a bottle of Mod Podge gave this old bucket new purpose in life!

Baby it's Cold Bucket 001

I applied some Mod Podge to the bucket, carefully applied the chalkboard art, then sealed it with a little more Mod Podge over the top.  Piece of cake right?

Woodland Mantle 038

It’s the perfect thing to hold my pinecones and a few sprigs of berries.

Woodland Mantle 039

And these are the most perfect pinecones I’ve ever seen, collected on Tybee Island this Fall.

I’ve pinned some of my favorite free printables and also some tutorials for drawing your own chalkboard art to my Chalkboard Art board on Pinterest which you can find right HERE.

Baby, it IS getting cold outside, even here in South Carolina.  It is the perfect weather for enjoying an evening by the fire and the beauty of another Old Thing made New.

Blessings,

St. Patrick’s Day Shenanigans!

March 17, 2014 by Patti 5 Comments

08-Vintage Strawberry Box Centerpiece and St Patti's Day Decor 023

Aw . . . ’tis St. Patrick’s Day. What a lovely excuse for a wee party,  a bit ‘o singin’ and a dancin’.  That’s what my Irish father would have said in answer to my childhood plea, “Speak Irish for us dad!”  I used to love hearing my father put on his Irish brogue to entertain me and my friends.  He might also say, “I’ll whip your bloody behind if ye don’t behave!,”   which always caused squeals of delight.

St. Patrick’s Day decorations are a nice way to transition into Spring.  I’ve removed the snowy winter display from my coffee table cloche and replaced it with this happy Irish leprechaun.

He even has his own pot of gold!

05-Vintage Strawberry Box Centerpiece and St Patti's Day Decor 020Is this a leprechaun or an Irish Priest?  Either way he’s a sparkly addition to St. Pat’s.

And this fun little frame-within-a-frame can be changed out with each holiday.

I have a whole set of different holiday pictures, courtesy of The Graphics Fairy of course!

2-St Patti's Day 006-001

This little guy can be seen around my house the whole year round.

1-St Patti's Day 002-001

You never know where he might pop up . . . kind of like The Elf on the Shelf.

3-St Patti's Day 009-001

Last year on St. Patrick’s Day I wrote about our family tradition where each grandchild received their own personal leprechaun from my father.  You can read more about that tradition HERE.

5-St Patti's Day 013-001

Right now he is hanging out on the bookshelf beside my Irish Papa’s picture.

Sooo . . . this is where the “shenanigans” part of this post comes in!  Sasha is all dressed up and ready for another holiday.

3-St Patti's Day 012

She looks so very patient but can you see the pleading look in her eyes as she longs for the treat in the bottom of her mug?  “Can we eat  now mom, can we, can we?”

4-St Patti's Day 015

5-St Patti's Day 016

7-St Patti's Day 023

“Ohhh, that was delicious . . .  but WAIT . . .  is that a piece of cookie I see on the table?”

6-St Patti's Day 019

“Should I do it?  Do I dare?”

8-St Patti's Day 028

“Got it!”

“SASHA!!!”

9-St Patti's Day 027

“I’m sorry mom but I really couldn’t help myself.  Besides, do you see what the sign says?”

1-Irish Prayer 001-001

“Is there anything more holy than a table covered in cookie crumbs?”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day and an Irish blessing to you too,

Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House

November 27, 2013 by Patti 8 Comments

So, a couple of weeks ago I had this hair brained idea. Our guest cottage became open unexpectedly, leaving us with just a few weeks before the arrival of our Christmas visitors.  Not being one to waste a good opportunity I asked Mr. OTN if we (my friend Linda and I) could host an Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House (wow, that’s a mouthful) and sell some of the things we’ve been working on.  Knowing that this would mean a bit of craziness around our house he gave us the go ahead (love him!) and we started working on getting it together this week.  Actually, we started getting it together just yesterday as we were busy with another bazaar last weekend.  I’ll give  you all the details at the end of the post but for now, here are some of the items we’ll be selling:

Seasonal decor . . . 02-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 002

03-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 005

18-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 062

09-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 026

01-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 001Purses and jewelry . . .

13-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 038Some mod decor . . .

04-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 008A coastal themed room . . . after all, that is the decor of our little cottage . . .

15-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 04314-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 040A bit of French Country . . .

05-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 010

23-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 078

07-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 013This is one of the pieces Linda’s been working on with a special paint that gives a patina’d metal effect to just about anything . . .

17-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 058And lots of miscellaneous pretties . . .

12-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 032

11-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 031

24-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 080

08-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 023Finally, I’m selling some of my Patti’s Perfect Paint Powder that can be mixed with any latex paint to create a homemade chalk paint.  After testing many home made chalk paint recipes this is the one I find to be superior.  I’ve packaged some  up some to sell locally and, who knows, maybe I’ll find a market it for it  on my blog as well.  I’ll be demonstrating how it works while I sell!

19-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 066So, here are all the details.  Our Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House (that is STILL a mouthful) will be held this Friday and Saturday from 9-3.  I would love for you to come on by if you are in the area.  Along with our own handcrafted items  we  have a couple of friends who’ve contributed to our “store”.  Our cottage by the lake is THE place to be on Black Friday (and Saturday).  We’d love for you to come have a cup of hot chocolate and stick around awhile for a little visit.
