Welcome to our New Home – The Entry Hall

October 9, 2014 by Patti 16 Comments

It felt a bit like Christmas . . . opening one box after another and carefully removing and unwrapping one object at a time.

What treasure would I find inside?

Sure, it had only been a few weeks since I’d packed our things for their long trek across the country . . . and it wasn’t as if I’d forgotten what I had, but somehow . . . all of our things looked  different to me here in this, our new HOME.

Fall Entry Hall 004Before I forget my manners I want to give you all a WARM WELCOME to our new (to us) home in South Carolina!

01-Fall Porch 2014 001I’ve already shared with you the front “portico” all decked out for Fall in my post A Grand Fall Porch!  . . .

Fall Entry Hall 052. . . but I haven’t taken you inside.  So please, come on in and see what I’ve been up to in the Entry Hall.

2014 Fall Decor 054As you come in the front door the dining room is to the right and the living room is to the left. The hallway leads to the kitchen and the den.

Fall Entry Hall 010The staircase leads up to the bedrooms and bonus room, which I’m still working on getting decorated.

Fall Entry Hall 040I said in my intro that my things look different here than they did in my old house and as I unpacked each item I became excited to see that they actually looked better here!

Fall Entry Hall 011My decor is a mix of things both old and new . . . ornate and shabby!  A casual sort of elegance.

Fall Entry Hall 044Many of my things have been handed down to me by family members or I’ve found them through Craigslist,  thrifting, antiquing or just plain careful shopping.  In my new home there are a lot of home décor items that you’ve never seen before on this blog.  They are things that I didn’t highlight so much when I lived in my lake house.   There you saw more of my thrifted and painted furniture and coastal decor.  I actually sold a lot of those things to the new owners and to friends before moving, knowing that my new home had a very different style.

Fall Entry Hall 060So this is my Entry Hall decorated for Fall.

Fall Entry Hall 013Birchwood candles on shabby garage sale candlesticks,

Fall Entry Hall 045a grand old mirror from one of my favorite junk stores in Washington State, The Second Hand Rose, a treasured picture that my mother bought from an antique store when I a child . . . because it reminded her of me,

Fall Entry Hall 019an iron lamp that she bought at that same antique store and painted a creamy white,

Fall Entry Hall 021some precious family books, including my mother’s own well-worn Bible,

Fall Entry Hall 017rusty old keys tied with twine,

Fall Entry Hall 018dried rosebuds from the garden at my lake house,

Fall Entry Hall 049a favorite cloche filled with velvet pumpkins,

Fall Entry Hall 039 (My tips for creating gorgeous velvet pumpkins tutorial HERE)

Fall Entry Hall 031and an old basket filled with hydrangeas and pumpkins.

Fall Entry Hall 026

Fall Entry Hall 027

Fall Entry Hall 040So this is only a tiny glimpse inside my new home . . . but I’ve been working hard at pulling things together and I promise . . . there is much more to come!

It feels to me as if our things have come home . . . to the place they were meant to be.  I think you’ll see as I decorate and take you through my new home, one room at a time, that my furniture and home decor fits quite well here.

But what about me?  As I work on each room, placing and arranging, then moving and rearranging, I’m feeling pretty good here, in this place that at first seemed as if it might be too grand for me . . .

the jeans girl . . . the lake girl . . . the girl who used to feel like she was never quite enough (and who under pressure still has twinges of those feelings today) . . .

When I told my friend Deanna that I wasn’t sure if this house was my style she said that when she saw the pictures she knew it was exactly my style.  And who would know better?  She is the one friend that I’ve spent the most time with shopping through home decor stores, pouring over magazines in Barnes and Noble’s coffee shop and discussing home interiors (to see one of our amazing shopping trips you can link back to Inspired in Seattle Part I, Part II and Part III  I just went back and took a look myself and I’m inspired all over again)!

Deanna is right of course.  I was actually raised in a home very much like this one, a grand old brick in a beautiful Seattle neighborhood, so some of my treasures actually have “come home”.  Truth be told, I’m not feeling much like a stranger here either.  In fact, it is beginning to feel a bit like I’ve come home, after a long, long time away.

Blessings,

My Signature-001

Favorite Tips for Creating Gorgeous Velvet Pumpkins!

October 2, 2014 by Patti 25 Comments

A brand new mini dress with psychedelic swirls of hot pink and lime green . . . my big sister “ratting” the crown of my new short haircut and sealing it in place with Aqua Net, the cement of hair sprays . . . a little bit of mascara (shhhh . . . don’t tell mom) . . . a touch of white frosted lipstick and I was out the door.

But OH, how I was shaking in my hot pink heels.  You see, it was my first day of Junior High and I was so afraid that I wouldn’t be sophisticated enough to fit in.

All my worries were for naught . . . as most of our worries tend to be.  I found a new best friend the very first day and went back to my normal mode of dress from that day forward, realizing that 7th graders aren’t very sophisticated after all.

5-Velvet Pumpkins & The Secret Garden Tea Room 001THAT is one of the memories of Fall that sticks out in my mind.  It is a good memory and a somewhat traumatic memory all at the same time!  I think it taught me a thing or two about trying to fit in though.  Flash forward to today . . . some (EEK!) 46 years later and remember . . . authenticity is always best.

So what about you dear readers?  What memories do you have of Fall?  What is the happiest memory you carry?  What is your favorite thing about this time of year?

2-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 069I don’t suppose you have to ask me what my favorite thing is because it is pretty obvious that I have a passion for decorating and making my home a welcoming place to be, each and every season.  It is especially fun this year to be decorating a brand new (to me) home.

9-Velvet Pumpkins Tips

I promised you in my post A GRAND FALL PORCH that I would be back to share with you my absolute best method for creating gorgeous velvet pumpkins.  I learned by trial and error so you don’t have to!  So lets get started:

2-Velvet Pumpkin Tute 002First of all, the Old Things New part.  I hit the thrift stores last Fall and searched out velvet and velour fabrics in pretty “Fallish” colors.  My pumpkins were made from old pillows, dresses and blouses.  You can make a whole LOT of pumpkins out of one woman’s full length dress, which is fun because then you’ll have some to give away to friends.  They will be delighted!

I created several sizes of pumpkins, using different sized plates as patterns.  The smallest pumpkin was traced from a salad plate and the largest from a serving tray.  I suppose you could have a REALLY big pumpkin if you traced it from something like a big aluminum snow sled!  How fun would that be?!

4-Velvet Pumpkin Tute 005Anyhoo, these are the “ingredients”:  White beans, Poly-fil, a couple different varieties of moss and dried pumpkin stems . . .

NOTE: For the pumpkin stems, you can dry stems taken from your own pumpkins OR, if you want a lot of them (like I did), you can walk through local pumpkins fields just after harvest and pick up what’s left behind (I actually did that . . . with permission of course).  The problem with that was I wanted to make velvet pumpkins . . . and I wanted to make them NOW!  So while my collected pumpkin stems were drying I ended up buying stems from an Etsy shop.

E6000 Lastly don’t forget the E6000, the absolute best crafting glue I’ve found . . . and I think they should pay me for saying that!

Begin by hand basting around the edges of your fabric circle with some extra strength thread.  Then pull the thread to gather the edges together, leaving just enough room to add the filler.

Now for my tried and true tips:

Tip number 1:  Add some beans to the bottom of the pumpkin, filling it about one third of the way.  This will give your pumpkin stability so it won’t tip over.

Tip number 2:  Be careful not to stuff your pumpkin too much.  Add polyester filler until your pumpkin is about three-quarters full, then pull your basting thread tight and tie it off.  Stuffing the pumpkin too full will make the pumpkin stems will look like they are sitting on top of the velvet pumpkin, rather than growing from it.

1-Velvet Pumpkins 002Tip number 3:  THIS tip is why I call this the BEST way to make velvet pumpkins. Attach the stems with E6000 and then scrunch the pumpkin up around the stem and rubber band it in place until it dries.  Overnight is best.  Remove the rubber bands and voila . . . gorgeous velvet pumpkin!

8-Velvet Pumpkins & The Secret Garden Tea Room 011But what if you have a mess up and it doesn’t look so gorgeous . . . like if you accidentally glop glue on top of the velvet, or you stuff it a bit too much and the stem doesn’t sit down inside the velvet nicely, or if your stitching shows, or whatever . . . ?

6-Velvet Pumpkins & The Secret Garden Tea Room 002Simply add a little moss to cover up the goofs!

Velvet Pumpkins 038And here you have it . . . a pumpkin redeemed!

7-Velvet Pumpkins & The Secret Garden Tea Room 005I like grouping my pumpkins together, some with moss and some without.

Velvet Pumpkins 025

Velvet Pumpkins 022

Velvet Pumpkins 069I also like mixing them in with real pumpkins and gourds.

Velvet Pumpkins 071

3-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 080One of my most viewed posts was this display of pumpkins contained in my junky chicken wire cloche.  To see more pics and to view the cloche tutorial you can link back HERE

4-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 106Finally, another cloche filled with pumpkins.  The Chevron patterned one was made from an old pillow cover and the little pumpkin on top was made from drop cloth fabric.  Aren’t they darling?  These pumpkins have a whole different look and were shared in a tutorial by the amazing Shannon over at AKA Design.  Head on over to her place to see the “how to” and while you’re there check out the rest of her blog.  It is packed with creative and inspirational goodness!

An added NOTE:  Jonni at Minnie’s Milestones made some of her own velvet pumpkins after reading this post and she has come up with a few extra tips that are extremely helpful. Head on over to her blog to see her pretty pumpkins and get some additional ideas!

So what’s next?  So far I’ve shown you the front porch of my new house.  Next I’ll be taking you inside where I’ve added a little more Fall decor.  I hope you’ll come back and join me.  I’m off now to find a Starbucks so I can savor one of my other favorite things about Fall, Pumpkin Spice Lattes!

Blessings,

A Grand Fall Porch!

September 22, 2014 by Patti 19 Comments

01-Fall Porch 2014 001The front porch of my new house feels . . . so . . . well . . . GRAND!  At least to me.  As I took a walk through my new neighborhood this past week I was itching to go back to my house and grab my camera to shoot some pictures.  That might not be the thing to do if I want to endear myself to my new neighbors though.  Every home is beautiful and I saw so many gorgeous wreaths and inviting porches.  It is evident that my new neighbors care about appearances.

If you saw my last post, a Farewell to Our Lake House, you’ll see that my old neighbors cared too . . . in a different . . . sometimes “funny” way.

37-Pattison Lake Homes 138Case in point . . . multi-colored Flamingos!

15-Fall Porch 2014 019This is a very different type of neighborhood.  Very classy.  Very sophisticated.  I feel like The Jeffersons . . . “Movin’ on up, to the Eastside . . .”

Will I measure up?  Does my style need to change to match my new neighborhood, my new house?  For a peek back at my lake house’s Fall porch decor you can click HERE , where you’ll see the simple country style that fit that house so well.

05-Fall Porch 2014 007My new house is a lot more formal with it’s brick stairway  and columned portico (I’ve never had a portico before).  It is a style that demands a little different approach to decorating for sure.

So I pulled a few things out of my Thanksgiving bin and headed down to Greenville’s Farmer’s Market this weekend to pick up a few extras.

16-Fall Porch 2014 021The first thing that caught my eye was this great wreath made of bittersweet berries.  It matches perfectly the swag I had from last year.  Does anyone know a method of preserving bittersweet?

02-Fall Porch 2014 003I also picked up some great gourds and pumpkins . . .

06-Fall Porch 2014 008

09-Fall Porch 2014 012 . . . to go with my velvet pumpkins.

04-Fall Porch 2014 006

12-Fall Porch 2014 015

11-Fall Porch 2014 014

07-Fall Porch 2014 009I found a gigantic mum just beginning to bloom out and I’m hoping it will be in full color when our friends from the NW come for a visit in just a few weeks.

08-Fall Porch 2014 011Our good Ol’ Beauregard has found his rightful place on our new front porch.

14-Fall Porch 2014 018He arrived with a few new scrapes and scratches but we’ll have him in top shape again . . . as soon as I can find my paints!

05-Fall Porch 2014 007So it isn’t exactly the same as my old front porch but I’ve still used very natural elements to add some much needed color to my front porch.  I’m pretty sure having our butler dog Beauregard adds a bit of class to the whole picture too . . . or at least a bit of whimsy.  I don’t think I’ll have to change my style much at all.  Your thoughts?

By the way, I have the BEST method of making velvet pumpkins which I’ll be sharing with you later this week so I do hope you’ll come on back.

Blessings,

10 Fab and One Sad Thanksgiving Tablescapes

November 16, 2013 by Patti 1 Comment

Thanksgiving is almost upon us and I’m in awe of the many amazing tablescapes I’ve seen.  This post includes 10 Fab and One Sad Thanksgiving Table.  Sad . . . because Mr. OTN must work Thanksgiving Day caring for our nation’s bravest and best (he has missed holiday call for several years in a row now so I guess that isn’t too bad).  Sad also, because my girls live so far away (I’ve mentioned before that we live in three opposite corners of the country) and they will be celebrating Thanksgiving closer to their own homes.

But on to the “FAB” . . . these Thanksgiving tablescapes are a feast in and of themselves. Many of them are from my favorite bloggers and many I’ve pinned from Pinterest.  Follow the link to each website for more Thanksgiving eye candy. Enjoy!

Amazing, yes?

Now, do I dare show you the state of my “sad” Thanksgiving table?   No . . .  I don’t want to detract from all the beauty you’ve just seen.  At present, my table is covered (in truth, my whole dining room is filled) with craft projects in a half done state as I prepare for our first ever Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House.  What I will most likely be doing on Thanksgiving day is finishing up projects for the Thanksgiving weekend sale to be held in our little guest cottage.  More info to come in a later post.

So, while I’m a little sad that I won’t be sharing Thanksgiving dinner with my beloved family, I’m grateful to have a family, and a wonderful one at that!

Blessings to you this holiday season,

My Signature

All That Glitters in my Entry Hall

November 9, 2013 by Patti 28 Comments

18-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 050Step into my entry hall where all that glitters is definitely not real gold but I hope you’ll still feel a big, warm welcome!  I am so happy that gold tones have made a comeback in home decor.  If you’ve read this blog for any time at all  you’ll know that I am a big fan of blues and greens but I have always loved using touches of gold and red as well.  This Fall I’ve been busy changing things up a bit to give my entryway a warm feel for the chilly days ahead.

1-Pearlized Walls 003It all began with the wall color, the same tan tone I have in my living room with a Valspar Brushed Pearl Finish painted over that base color.  This finish is very subtle, unlike the sponge paint that was previously on this wall, and I think it adds just a touch of elegance.  FYI: Lowe’s doesn’t carry the same color I used in my entry hall any longer but if you look at the link to the Brushed Pearl finishes, “Simply Elegant” looks pretty close to what I have here.

17-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 047

03-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 011

04-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 014The first thing I did to welcome Fall was to take off my summery linen pillow covers, exposing the heavier Fall fabrics beneath.  I don’t buy new pillows, I just swap out pillow covers for each season, saving money and space.

15-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 043

16-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 044

02-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 010This is a bench we picked up at our local Habitat Re-Store.  I’ve left it unpainted for now as the wood is nice but I’m contemplating painting it Pottery Barn black.  What do you think?  I’m open to suggestions.

14-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 042It’s nice that the lid on this piece opens for storing our scarves and gloves.  I’ve  added two pillow top cushions for comfy seating and four baskets beneath for more storage.

Next I started rearranging my wall to make space for a very special new arrival which I’ll share with you at the end!  Each of my wall hangings have been collected over time and all have special meaning to me.

08-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 022I love antique frames and picked this one up at a local antique store.  I think it’s funny when people comment that a frame isn’t in good shape because of the pieces that are broken off of it.  The imperfections of this frame are exactly what made me want to take it home.

09-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 023The monogram was a cardboard letter from JoAnne’s painted with gold paint and aged with dark wax.  I added some rosettes made from old book pages and dry brushed them with a bit of gold.

2-Golden Entry Hall 018I was only a young child but I remember the day my mom purchased this picture of a little girl at her piano lesson.  She found it at an oceanside antique store on our way home from a trip to southern California.  For many years it hung over the organ in our home and was meant to be an encouragement to me to practice, practice, practice . . . something I didn’t really want to do.  It later hung over my own daughter’s keyboard where she practiced for the pure joy of making music.  Needless to say, she became much more accomplished than I.

6-Entry Hall 023Antique mirrors are also something I’m drawn to and this little one is perfect for that one last check before I head out the door!

3-Golden Entry Hall 027This sweet little brass hand was one of those things I just couldn’t pass up and how lovely it is for holding a few flowers from my yard.

4-Golden Entry Hall 031

07-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 021This is an oil painting we purchased in Israel in 2007.  I first saw this painting through a shop window on the Cardo, the main street through the old city of Jerusalem. I was so touched to think of the brave soldiers who protect the nation of Israel praying at the wailing wall for their own protection, that it brought tears to my eyes.  The shop owner, the artist himself, came out of the shop to talk to me and when he saw how moved I was he offered to give me the picture.  Of course I couldn’t let him do that but I did purchase it and had it shipped home.  The oil paint used in the wailing wall portion of the painting has actual crushed wailing wall stone mixed into it.  I later came to find out that the artist is quite famous in Israel and throughout the world.  His paintings hang in many prestigious places, including The White House.  If there is anything pure gold about my entry hall, this is it!

1-Golden Entry Hall 008Next is another old frame I fell in love with at another antique shop and made into a chalkboard modeled after one I saw at Worthing Court.  2004 is the year we bought the home we live in now.  Suzy’s tutorial on how to transfers letters to chalkboards is just great!  I look forward to doing more chalkboard art in the future.

10-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 028Finally, my most recent purchase and something I find to be such a fun addition to my entry hall are these lovely horns!  I thought they were supposed to be antelope horns but they don’t look like any of the pictures I’ve seen online, so I don’t really know what they are.  Can anyone tell me?

This is a before pic of our friend John (you remember the photo bomber from my last post?) attempting to attach them to his hat.

12-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 034This is the after, with the plaque cleaned up and stained, the horns bleached to remove the greenish tinge and the tips gold leafed.  Aren’t they amazing?

06-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 017Did you notice how the sunlight catches the gold on these horns?  And it’s a cloudy day!  I think these horns are going to bring great joy into my life! Haha!

I know it isn’t everyone’s style to have horns hanging in their home.  I guess that’s why they call my style Farmhouse Glam!  If you’re interested in finding out what your particular style is you can take a test right HERE.  It has actually been very helpful to put a name to my style in that it has helped me to stay focused when I go shopping. I just like so many different things!

05-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 016Of course I had to add  a little Fall wreath for embellishment!

7-Entry Hall 031So that’s the update to my Entry Hall, and here’s Sasha, eagerly awaiting the arrival of company.

Though I’ve resisted until now putting away the summer decor I’ve finally embraced the season and I’m enjoying the changes to my home.  It will be nice to sit by the fire on the long dark winter nights ahead and sip on a hot drink.  What a nice break it will be from all the outdoor work of Spring and Summer.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven . . . Ecclesiastes 3:3 (KJV)

1-Entry Hall & Fall Decor 094I hope you are enjoying this season of life too.

Blessings to you,

I am Perfectly Imperfect Patti, daughter of the King, wife to the amazing Mr. OTN, mom to two grown daughters, a great son-in-law, and companion to two spoiled dogs. At Old Things New I share DIY’s, budget friendly home transformations, as well as posts about how God transforms our souls. I myself have been made new and I love to share what I’ve learned through WRITING and SPEAKING. To view a short Vimeo of “Our Story” (Mr. OTN and I) please follow the link at the top of the page.
