Day 14 – Starting Over or Giving Up?

October 14, 2018 by Patti 3 Comments

The Write 31 Days Challenge – 31 Days,Every Day,One Topic

Day 14

(day 1 starts here)

The onset of Summer and life at the new lake house was a soothing balm to my soul.  Sunny weather is like that for me. As Kelly and I renewed our commitment to our marriage we began studying the attributes of God together, and God gradually began healing the hurt between us.

Day 13 – Only the Beginning of the Hard

Day 13

(day 1 starts here)

Recently, as I was texting back and forth with a childhood friend about this series, I typed:

“I’m anxious to get through the rest of the hard in the story . . . I want to get to the redemption and the things God has done in my life and the fact that I went from bashful Patti to outgoing Patti who talks to anyone and everyone. I want to share my joy and hope and inspire others to face the painful parts of their lives and move forward into God’s healing!”

And I do!

I want more than anything to share my JOY with you. Click To Tweet

Hang in there. It will come.

Day 12 – The Letter

Day 12

(day 1 starts here)

NOTE (This is a repeat of the disclaimer I posted at the beginning of Day 7): Early on in this series I said that it wasn’t a “tell-all” story, and that while my story is mine to tell, the stories of others who might be hurt in the telling are not.  This post contains details about my husband Kelly and his struggles. He has given me permission to share this.  In fact, ever since we started speaking about our story together publicly he has told me that I am free to share anything that might be of help to others.

It was Saturday afternoon and the weather was mild as I walked out to check the mailbox. In the box was an envelope addressed to me. It looked like it might be an invitation to a baby shower, or perhaps a thank you note, as the back flap was sealed with cute teddy bear stickers.

I walked back into the house and laid the rest of the mail down before opening the envelope and reading the card inside:

Day 11 – We Should be Good Now, Right?

October 11, 2018 by Patti Leave a Comment

The Write 31 Day Challenge – 31 Days,Every Day,One Topic

Day 11

(day 1 starts here)

We were attending church on a pretty regular basis for over a year when word came that Pastor John and Nancy were being called to plant a church in Frisco, Texas.  It was hard to lose them because we loved them so much, but Nathan and Rose, a couple we’d bonded with at the church camp out (when they invited us into their motorhome and served us coffee with at least 6 choices of creamer!), became the new leaders of the church. 🙂

It wasn’t long before Pastor Nathan gave Kelly the opportunity to share his recovery story in church services, which was great!  Except for . . .

Day 9 – Welcome Home

Day 9

(day 1 starts here)

When Kelly’s three months in treatment was coming to an end I wasn’t ready.  I didn’t know how to behave. I told myself that I’d need to keep everything on an even keel for him so he wouldn’t get stressed out and start using drugs or alcohol again.  I was a co-dependent on steroids!

He did well though.  He followed every rule they gave him in treatment.  90 meetings in 90 days. Sometimes he’d even go to two meetings a day. He poured himself into the recovery process because he knew that he didn’t have another recovery in him.

He knew that were he to go out and use again it would be his death. Click To Tweet

Instagram post 2177901818655098666_308355002 Tomorrow I will participate in Purple Stride in San Antonio, a 5k to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer. This is the deadliest cancer with the lowest survival rate of only 9% at two years. My friend @summerthymes, a PC survivor, signed up for this walk several months ago in honor of my Kelly💜. I can’t wait to join her and other friends and family to participate. I’ve packed my suitcase with a lot of purple 💜 but also a little bit of green and blue for the ultimate Seahawk fan💙💚#PanCan #purplestride #5k #sanantonio #pancreaticcancer #facinggriefheadon #iheartkellykrank #whynotus #gohawks
