DIY Succulent Pumpkins

September 12, 2017 by Patti 8 Comments

Hey there friends.  Today’s post is my very first nod to Fall.  I’m nodding at you Fall but I’m not embracing you, especially after you littered my yard with debris last night.

I’m writing this post as I listen to the sound of chainsaws next door, where my neighbor had two trees go through their roof last night during the windstorm.  We were on the far edge of hurricane Irma’s path but we had heavy winds and power outages.  All I can say is that I’m very thankful that we were spared any damage to our home.

When Life Gives You a Broken Wrist (or a Leaky Birdbath) Plant Succulents!

May 15, 2015 by Patti 32 Comments

Perhaps you’ve noticed that I haven’t been blogging much lately and yes, there is a reason.  I hate to sound whiny here on my blog and I also hate to seem whimpy.  That’s why I waited a week after breaking my wrist before going to the doctor to have it x-rayed.  That’s also why I waited two weeks after the cast came off before going back to the doctor with my suspicion that something wasn’t right.  Pride?  Yeah, maybe.

Feeling more pain after the cast comes off than when it went on is not good.  Not being able to write or type or turn the key in the ignition, or sleep soundly at night because of shooting pain up your arm is bad.  Having your husband tell you to get into the doctor, when your husband is a doctor, is the worst!

I remind myself that a broken wrist is a little thing and how blessed I am compared to people who have really awful things in their lives.  Still, not being able to work on all of the projects I’ve started has left me feeling a bit “down in the dumps” for the past couple of months (losing our SnoopyGirl didn’t help either).

Succulent birdbath prep

Before planting I drilled a few holes in the bottom of the cement birdbath and added rocks to the bottom for drainage as succulents don’t like to remain too moist.

So when life gives you a broken wrist, or a leaky birdbath, the perfect thing to do is plant succulents!  I have been able to do projects that don’t require small motor movement of my right hand and wrist so I’ve been spending a lot of time working in my yard, which is a delight this time of year.  Now . . . since even writing this little bit is painful . . . I’m going to move on and show you the pics I took after planting this old birdbath and thrift store pitcher with succulents.

This is one small corner of my yard where I’ve added color. Beyond the grass is a fenced wooded area with a walking trail.  We plan to add more plantings along the edge of the grass as time goes on in order to create a bit of an enclosed courtyard feeling to our backyard.

Over the summer these succulents will grow and begin to overflow this container like they did in the three-tiered succulent planter I did a couple of summers ago.

Super simple and super cute right?  And how handy it was to have a tree right there to wire the pitcher to.

Today I start twice weekly occupational therapy on my frozen wrist.  My faith tells me to pray for healing of my wrist.  I’ve had lots of prayer and I believe that God is healing my hand.  The whiny in me would love for it to be sooner rather than later.

Though I’ve missed sharing what I’m working on with you all I can honestly say that I’m enjoying not having the pressure of hours spent preparing and sharing posts.  As we head into summer my stress meter is lower than it’s been in a long time so perhaps I’m learning a thing or two along the way.  Any maybe, just maybe, God’s timing for healing my hand is the perfect timing 🙂

Though I’m not blogging much right now I AM taking pictures of the things I’m enjoying every day. If you like to share in that, please follow me on Instagram.

Blessings to you until the next time,

Summer Porch Decor

July 21, 2013 by Patti 26 Comments

Welcome to my front porch in summer. The weather has been glorious, cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons.  Perfect for “setting a spell”.  Walk on down the pathway to our front door     . . . under the apple tree, through the bird feeders, and past the bubbling fountain.
This is the porch swing that Mr. OTN and a friend hung for me last summer.  I purchased the seat cushion from World Market and made pillows out of outdoor fabrics.

I was planning on sewing cord covers for the chains until I saw what Laurie over at Heaven’s Walk did with her porch swing.  Her “whimsical gypsy swing” is gorgeous.  I think she did a lot more wrapping of the chains on hers, and she has wonderful flowy curtains on her porch and . . . well . . . you really should just go over there and take a look.  Don’t forget to come back though . . . her blog is addicting!
This was so easy to do. I simply tore strips of leftover fabric and started tying them onto the chains.
Aren’t they pretty when they blow in the breeze?
My Rosette Wreath is still hanging on the porch but I’ve added a wild grapevine wreath behind it for more layering.
If you haven’t seen the tutorial for this wreath you can link up HERE.
Next to my swing is a 3-tiered succulent planter made from a Goodwill find.  Directions for this are also on a previous post that you can find it right HERE.
I’ve added just a few coastal touches to my summer porch.  Fossils we’ve collected on past vacations,
A sign pointing the way down to the lake,
some curly branches I found while beach combing,
a lantern and a driftwood wreath.

No tutorial needed for this wreath.  I simply made it by glue gunning pieces of gathered driftwood onto a purchased grapevine wreath.
I won’t say it was hard to do but I did tear it apart a few times to get the driftwood to look like it had collected naturally into a pile rather than being perfectly placed.  Perfection is my enemy!
Here is a look at the other end of our porch,

with one of our Beagles, Cozy, contemplating escape, and our porch guard dog, Beauregard.  He is often relegated to holding the collections I bring home until they dry out and the bugs crawl away.

I’m so happy you came by for a visit and I really hope you’ll come back  soon.  There is always something new happening at our place!
Blessings to you,

Three Tiered Succulants

June 26, 2013 by Patti 47 Comments

My Goodwill has a large section of decorative wire containers in their home decor department.  I found this little 3-tiered guy while taking my weekly power walk through the store and I knew exactly what his new purpose for existence would be! Please excuse the poor quality picture. Does anyone know how to enlarge iPhone pics without distorting them?
This one would not be relegated to kitchen duty. Instead, he was going to become a majestic 3-tiered succulent “fountain”.

Three-tier succulent planter

Lined with a little Spanish moss (also found at the thrift store) and some potting soil he was all ready for some succulents poked in at random. Planting succulents really is that easy. They don’t have a large root system, can be poked in just about anywhere and survive with very little water.

I just love the mix of color and texture in these fun-to-grow plants.

This is the day of planting.

And here he is today.  Succulents grow quite fast, it’s only been a month.  I can’t wait to see what he’ll look like by the end of the summer.

Both Costco and our local Fred Meyer carry large flats of assorted succulents so I not only had enough for this planter but had enough leftover to poke them into several pots around my yard.

If you haven’t tried succulents I encourage you to do so. They are inexpensive bought buy the flat, easy to grow and add great color to the garden.
     Blessings,
