10 Steps to a Perfectly Painted Exterior Door

June 7, 2016 by Patti 40 Comments

Painted Door 018

Today I’m pondering the fact that one never really knows one’s friends.  They can seem to be on the straight and narrow, even a little straighter and narrower than you, when something is said or done that reveals their true natures.

Front Door Before 002

Case in point:  A couple of weeks ago I posted on Facebook that I was feeling rather rebellious.  I’ve been wanting to paint my front door ever since moving into our neighborhood and several months back I mentioned it to a neighbor who happens to be a member of the architectural committee.  He told me point blank that I shouldn’t paint my door without getting the committee’s permission.  This was a little discouraging, given the neighborhood gossip that said that the committee was painfully slow at approving anything.  So after stewing for awhile over the unfairness of it all I put the idea aside.  That is until Spring sprang once again, and my black door continued to hide in the shadows, making my porch seem like an entrance into a black hole.  With encouragement from a few friends (who I already knew were rebellious types) I decided to go for it!

What surprised me about my FB post was that ALL my friends (save two who commented that they are rule followers and had heart palpitations even thinking about what I was intent on doing) agreed wholeheartedly that I should, “Just do it!”  Like I said, one never really knows one’s friends.

Ten Steps to a Perfectly Painted Exterior Door

I am extremely pleased with how my door turned out so today I will share with you my 10 Steps to a Perfectly Painted Exterior Door (tips borrowed from online door painting tutorials).  Before you begin, do choose a mild weather day for painting as you will need to keep your door open for an extended period.  Mid morning to early afternoon is best.

1. Gather your supplies: 1 quart of good quality latex exterior paint (I used Valspar because it was here waiting for me when we bought our house – sorry, it was a custom mix and there isn’t a color on the can), a dropcloth, a damp rag, a good quality 2-3″ acrylic bristled paint brush, a smaller paint brush for painting around hardware and in tight places, painter’s tape, and a small stepstool or ladder.

Front door paint color 001

UPDATE:  After several requests I took my paint can to Lowe’s and this is the color match formula they gave me. You can print this formula and take it to any Lowe’s Hardware and they will be able to mix this same exterior paint for you.

2. Prep your door and painting area:  Wash off any dirt and wipe dry.  If mold is present, use a mold retardant and allow to dry thoroughly.  If your door is in rough shape you may need to sand it smooth before painting (be sure to wear a protective mask when sanding loose paint).  If your door has oil paint on it, is a new unprimed door, or if you are applying light colored paint over dark, prime with bonding primer. Lay a drop cloth under the door. Cover anything you’ll have trouble painting around with painter’s tape.  Stir paint well and begin.

Note:  If you aren’t sure if your door is painted with oil or latex paint a simple test is to dip a cotton ball in a small amount of denatured alcohol and rub it over the door’s surface.  It the paint does not come off on the cotton ball it is oil paint and must be primed with a bonding primer prior to painting.

3. If you are only painting the outside of the door begin by painting the door edge first. If your door swings inward the hinged edge gets the outside color.  If the door swings outward just the opposite is true.

4. Paint hinges if already painted. Otherwise leave them unpainted.

5. Paint around door windows or hardware (or remove them first for ease of painting). The Proper Way to Paint a Door 0046. With a raised panel door, paint the reveals first (this is the frame around the center panel).

The Proper Way to Paint a Door 0057. Paint the panels inside the reveals next.

The Proper Way to Paint a Door 0108. Paint the rails (these are the horizontal cross pieces) working from the top down and painting horizontally, left to right.

The Proper Way to Paint a Door 0149. Paint the stiles last (the vertical parts of the door) from top to bottom.

10. Wait an hour or follow directions on paint can and repeat these steps.

Front Door Before 001Before Painting

Painted Door 016

After Painting

Sometimes a third coat of paint is necessary for good coverage, especially if painting light over dark.  Leave your door open 2-3 hours to dry.  Remove any tape and you are done!

Painted Door 004

Another post I put out to my friends on Facebook was what color hardware should I use on my newly painted door?  The brass deadbolt wasn’t working properly so we needed to replace it anyway.

Painted Door 007

I had votes for virtually every color but oil rubbed bronze was by far the favorite.  I liked that choice too because it matches nicely with my urns and the shutters on the windows.

Painted Door 006

It was also a good choice because we only had to replace the door handle and everything else was able to be sprayed with Rustoleum’s Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint, thus saving additional expense.

Painted Door 008

From a distance my door isn’t bright enough to catch the attention of the architectural committee which, by the way,  I found out has no jurisdiction over door color.  Sheesh!

Painted Door 013

But it no longer looks like one is entering into a black hole.

Painted Door 001

Now it opens right in to the colors I’ve used throughout my home.

Painted Door 014

So whatcha’ think?  Should I paint the inside of the door the same color?  I’m pretty sure it would make my hallway feel happy. 😉

Blessings (you may need them if you too are rebellious) friends,

Tips for Creating Rustic French Signage

July 22, 2015 by Patti 17 Comments

Do you ever have times of feeling SUPER motivated . . . with great bursts of energy to tackle projects you’ve been carrying around in your head?  Times of enough forward incentive to conquer two, or three, or six undertakings at the same time?

That’s what sunshine does for me.

When it’s dreary and drizzly outside my window I seem to lack ambition but with the long sunny days of summer here in SC I’m on a roll!

La Creperie Tips

As promised in my post Adding the French Country Look to Your Kitchen, I’m back to share:

My Favorite Tips for Creating Rustic French Signage
Powered By the Tweet This Plugin
Tweet This
Some of what I’ll be sharing I learned while taking the Farragoz Painting Course seen on my sidebar (if you haven’t it checked out yet you should).  It has been a great course for learning things about painting that I’d never learned anywhere else, as well as teaching me to make my own paints from natural products.

La Creperie 002

For this project I’m using some items I had on hand from previous projects (items the course teaches one to make from scratch), Americana Decor’s Chalky Finish paint in black and white Liquitex Gesso.

La Creperie 001a

On a pre-cut board from Michael’s I began by painting on a few layers of Gesso and then layers of black paint, drying between each coat with a hair dryer.

La Creperie 004

Can you see all the cool cracking caused by my hair dryer?  Next I took a cheap candle and smushed it on the surface, wherever I wanted the black paint to show through my top coat.  Note the big chunks of wax left behind.

La Creperie 006

I painted over everything with Behr’s knockoff of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (ASCP) color Country Grey.  This color and all the remaining paint colors used in this tutorial were mixed with my Homemade Chalk Paint Recipe #3. One coat covers well but I used two for an even more layered look.

Weathered baskets 003

La Creperie Script

Lettering was next and this picture on Facebook was my inspiration.

La Creperie 009

I eyeballed the picture and drew it by hand on a piece of paper about the size I thought would work for my sign.  You could use a stencil but I rather like the not-so-perfect, hand lettered look.

After a bit of drawing, erasing and drawing again I was finally happy with my penciled lettering and transferred it onto my board.  Tracing with graphite paper is one way of doing this or, if you are too lazy to go looking for the graphite paper up in your craft closet, a simple Typography Transfer tutorial can be found HERE.

La Creperie 0022

After transferring my letters I lightly distressed the board, mostly around the edges, and used a knife point to “pick up” the paint that was over the wax, revealing the chalky black beneath.

Painting 001

This extreme close-up shows an example of the kind of depth you can achieve with layers of paint and wax.

La Creperie 0033

La Creperie 003a

The next step was to dry brush around the outer edges of my board . . .

Weathering Baskets With Paint 001

 . . . using Behr’s ASCP knock-off of French Linen.

La Creperie 0053

Painting the lettering was done with a tiny brush and a steady hand . . .

La Creperie 007

. . . using Behr’s knock-off version of ASCP Greek Blue.

La Creperie 009a

La Creperie 010

The shadowing was not done in an ASCP color but is a Behr sample that I bought to try on a BIG future project (one of the things I’m working on this week).

La Creperie 011

This is a picture taken during the shadowing process.  I had to keep reminding myself that my shadows needed to fall to the right and below my letters.  No worries about perfection though because any goof is an easy fix with more paint. Wink, wink!

La Creperie 013

After lettering I used my tiny brush to freehand some embellishments on my board.  Not worrying too much about keeping things uniform or perfect makes it super simple for anyone to do!

La Creperie 018

Finally I waxed my board to protect it.  I added dark wax first . . .

La Creperie 020. . . then a little soft wax to “erase” some of the areas I didn’t want to be quite so dark.

 La Creperie 019

I used dark wax only on the sides, allowed all the wax to dry for an hour or so, then buffed the entire sign to a nice sheen.

That’s pretty much it . . . MY favorite tips for creating Rustic French Signage.  Below are several shots of La Creperie Bleue on display in my French Country decorated kitchen.

La Creperie 016Cute “vintage” signs are sold everywhere right now and I have one that you may have seen in my last post.  I like it a lot but I’d much rather have something that is original and not mass produced.  Maybe you’ll try your hand at creating some rustic signage of your own.  If you do I’d love to see pictures or answer any questions you might have along the way.

If being crafty isn’t your thing but you’d love to check out some beautiful rustic French signage to purchase, I think you’ll be delighted by what you see at my friend Janice’s online shop, French Velvet Horses.

Janice’s heart goes into everything she creates and that is the mark of a TRUE artist!

And now, since we’re lovin’ on all things French lately, a little language lesson:

French-Greetings-A Blessings to you my friends and *bonne nuit!

*Bonne nuit – That’s good night before going to bed, which I’m not, because I’m on to another project while the motivation is strong!

Farragoz Giveaway – And The Winner is . . .

February 23, 2015 by Patti 3 Comments

Were you one of those lucky girls that was chosen first for games in P.E.?  Or even second or third?  Or twenty-second in a class of thirty?  Insert Patti frowny face here because I was NOT.  On the bright side, I wasn’t usually the last either, only second or third to the last.  “Bashtiful Patti,” the neighbor man’s name for me, wasn’t very assertive so I was never a top pick for competitive sports.  Now, if we’d had to choose teams for art class . . . well . . .  I wouldn’t have been top pick for that team either but I would’ve been closer to the top for sure!  Awww . . . the traumas of childhood.

Farragoz course painting technique

Repurposed “Jonque”

That is probably what’s behind my wanting everyone to be a winner of the Farragoz Giveaway I’ve been running on my blog. I’ve learned so many things in this painting course that I can now apply to my furniture painting and repurposing of “jonque” (junk looks so much better in French) that I want everyone else who is a painter of stuff to have the chance to learn what I’ve learned. But there can only be one winner . . . THIS time!

So . . . drum roll please . . . Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr . . .

The winner of the Farragoz Painting Course  is JUDY!

Congratulations Judy. Farragoz will be contacting you via email today to get you started.

Repurposed “jonque”

Now . . . since I want everyone to feel special do I have a consolation prize for the rest of you?  Stay tuned for my next post.

DIY Clock Face & One Fantastic Giveaway!

January 21, 2015 by Patti 31 Comments

Farragoz clock 009

I gave you a peek at my clock face in my last post and promised to come back and share the full reveal.  I also promised a giveaway and I can hardly wait to tell you all about it!

Farragoz clock 027

Before I give away what the giveaway is though, take a look at what I created with Farragoz, the online painting course I’ve been taking this past year.

Farragoz clock 025

I’ve always wanted a large clock face for my home and what fun it was to create my own.

Farragoz clock 022

This amazing course teaches old world painting techniques with paints that you make yourself.

Farragoz clock 010

There are six modules to the course and in each one you learn to create a different project.

Farragoz Module 1 020

You may remember my first project which was this icon.  Now listen . . . I am a painter of walls . . . and furniture . . . and various other knick knacks around the house.  I am not a painter of “real” artwork.  So I must say that I amazed even myself, especially myself, with how well this turned out.  I was also surprised at how easy it was to do with the step-by-step support of the Farragoz team.

Farragoz clock 032

Each piece of art is done at your own pace, one step at a time, reporting your progress in pictures along the way.  If you have any questions a personal instructor is right there to help you and to cheer you on!

Farragoz clock 008

When I started this course I thought I might be getting myself in over my head and worried that my work wouldn’t look as good as the examples given to follow,

Farragoz clock 004

but I was assured that this is a course easy enough for a beginner, and it really is!  I also soon realized that the idea is to create something of your own making, unique to you, and not a copy of someone else’s work.

Farragoz clock 001

The paints are made of inexpensive and safe natural products and they are applied in multiple layers, then sealed, also with natural products. Once the painting was complete I was instructed in new ways of distressing my piece to give it the aged look that I love.

Farragoz Module 2 002

In this picture you can see the depth and texture the clock face has after distressing.

Farragoz Module 2 008

This picture shows texture and also the brightness of the homemade gold paint. I love a little glitz you know!

Farragoz Module 2 016

And here is one more picture taken before I added the winter touches to my clock, so you can see the distressing around the edges of the piece.

Farragoz clock 007

I think the greatest thing about the new techniques I’ve learned is that I will be able to use them on my future furniture projects.  I’ve already used some of the leftover paint from my clock face on a once hideous mirror from Goodwill.  Now I’m just trying to figure out which room I’ll hang it in so I can decide what the final color will be.  The before and after photos are going to be incredible!

Farragoz clock 026

So what about the giveaway?

I am absolutely . . . over-the-top . . . DELIGHTED to announce that Farragoz has generously offered to give away an online course to ONE of my lucky readers!   You can sign up below.  The more boxes you check the more chances you have of winning!  By entering this giveaway you are confirming that you are 18 years or over. Void where prohibited.  The contest will run through February 20th (I don’t know how I’m going to stand waiting that long to see who wins) and the winner will be announced when all of the numbers are tallied!

To Enter: Simply follow the directions on the rafflecopter form below and . . . please . . .  don’t forget to tell your friends about this fantastic giveaway!

This is not a paid post.
