Mercury Glass Used in Winter Decor

December 31, 2013 by Patti 21 Comments

I have a special fondness for mercury glass no matter what time of the year but especially in winter.  Winter nights are long and the days are short and anything that catches and reflects a little more light around my home makes me happy. 03-Mercury Glass at Christmas (2)

04-Mercury Glass at Christmas (3)

05-Mercury Glass at Christmas (4)I spray painted the inside of this clear bottle to give it the mirrored effect of mercury glass, then added this cute little snow baby graphic (I’ll give you all the who, what, where, when, how info at the end of this post!)

06-Mercury Glass at Christmas (5) I love the look of dried cotton but since I didn’t have any available to me I made my own.  What do you think?

09-Mercury Glass at Christmas (10)  On Christmas my sister-in-law asked me where I got the cotton and when I told her my secret she was so impressed.

07-Mercury Glass at Christmas (6)On the reverse side of the bottle I added a different graphic.

08-Mercury Glass at Christmas (8)

11-Mercury Glass at Christmas (13) In my powder room I have these great vintage bottles on display.  I was fortunate enough to find a whole “family” of them at a local thrift store for $2.00 apiece.   After a few light coats of spray paint I applied French perfume bottle labels which seemed fitting for a powder room.

16-Mercury Glass at Christmas (18)A little twine and few sprigs of faux winter berry branches make these festive all winter long.

01-Mercury Glass 009This is a vase I had on hand (one of those vases that collect under the sink after the flowers are gone).   I added a pretty vintage earring for a little more bling.

06-Mercury Glass 029Roses and mercury glass go so well together . . .

05-Mercury Glass 025As an FYI, Looking Glass spray will not withstand water.  I put my flowers in a ZipLock bag filled with water and carefully slipped it down into the vase.  You could also insert a smaller vase inside a large one.

02-Mercury Glass 012

Here mercury glass is a part of my winter centerpiece.  Silver and gold mixed together is festive for New Year’s and beyond.

2-Mercury Glass 053

1-Mercury Glass 052A little warmth on a cold winter’s night.

08-Mercury Glass 045One last touch of mercury glass in my home are these light fixtures that I purchased to hang over my kitchen island.  Being a DIYer I tried to use my fancy spray paint on the frosted glass shades that used to hang here.  Note: Mercury glass spray paint does not look good on frosted glass!  They turned out looking more like metal shades than glass.  Oh well, there are bound to be some failures along the way.

10-Mercury Glass 048I thought these were reasonably priced and they came from Pottery Barn.

09-Mercury Glass 046

So, here are the details, as promised:

For all of the DIY mercury glass projects I used Krylon Looking Glass spray paint (found at WalMart) to create the mirrored effect.  There are many good tutorials to be found online but for these pieces I simply followed the instructions on the can and sprayed a thin coat of paint down into the bottle followed by a spritz of water to make the water drop effect.  I speeded up the drying time by using my hair dryer between each coat of paint.  On the more “see-through” items (like the old bottles) I used 3-4 coats of paint and on the vases I probably used 5-6 coats of paint.

All of the cute graphics are from The Graphics Fairy.  If you haven’t been to her fabulous website you’ve gotta go!  To age the paper I dipped it in very strong coffee, placed it on a cookie sheet and baked it in the oven at 200 degrees for about 10 minutes.  Then I applied it to my bottles with Mod Podge.

For the homemade cotton twigs I used pieces of polyfill stuffing which I sort of rolled into balls between my hands and “stuck” onto pussy willow branches at random.  I didn’t use any glue at all  and they’ve held up just fine.

Do you love the look of mercury glass as much as I do?  For more bright and shiny inspiration be sure to check out my Pinterest Board “Mercury Glass Love”. I’ve pinned a lot of items that I’d like to try to duplicate myself, if I can find the right clear glass pieces.  I’ve also pinned some ideas on how to use mercury glass pieces in home decor.

Keep your light shining bright throughout this winter season.

Blessings to you,

My SignatureMercury Glass

A Stripey Makeover for a Vintage Suitcase

September 24, 2013 by Patti 27 Comments

9-Vintage Suitcase After and Bdrm Bench Before 040I love the look of old trunks and suitcases and I’ve been wanting to do a vintage suitcase makeover for some time now.  I must admit that mine in a knockoff of one I saw on another blog, but I can’t remember exactly where.  Can anyone help me with that? Maybe it’s you and I’d love to give you credit.1-vintage trunk redo 003The vintage suitcase I used came from my in-laws garage sale and it is exactly like one that my parents had when I was a child.  This made it especially appealing to me.  I started by taping it off for the stripes and began painting, using two colors of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Old White and Versailles.  The pictures that I decoupaged onto the suitcase came from The Graphics Fairy website, of course.  The number of my projects that have revolved around that website I can’t even say!

2-Vintage trunk redo 004

1-Vintage trunk redo 002

To age the graphics a bit I dipped them in strong coffee and laid them out on a foil-lined cookie sheet.  I “baked” them at 200 degrees for about 4 minutes (watching them closely to avoid a fire) and then laid them out on a wire rack to finish drying.

1-Vintage Suitcase After and Bdrm Bench Before 001

After Mod Podging the graphics in place I sealed everything with two coats of MinWax Polycrylic.  Funny, Mr. OTN liked the color combo and he thought it looked cool with the graphics applied but he was VERY concerned that it was no longer useful as a piece of luggage, “It will be ruined if someone uses it for travel!”  I patiently explained to him that this isn’t meant to be used as a piece of luggage anymore but as a piece of home decor.

6-Vintage Suitcase After and Bdrm Bench Before 028

7-Vintage Suitcase After and Bdrm Bench Before 031

8-Vintage Suitcase After and Bdrm Bench Before 033

“Why are you staging it for pictures like it’s going on a trip if it’s no longer luggage?”,  I can hear Mr. OTN thinking in his head.  I haven’t come up with a good answer for him yet.  If I don’t sell this I’d better find something to do with it in my home.  Maybe I’ll pad the inside and make it a bed for the dogs . . . that would make Mr. OTN happy . . . or it could be stacked with some other pieces of luggage and used as a side table in his office.    4-Vintage Suitcase After and Bdrm Bench Before 016

I actually kinda like it just sitting in my front entryway looking like some interesting guests have just arrived for a stay. What are your ideas?  What would you do with this suitcase?  Does it even really need to have a purpose?

Blessings to you,

Garden Tray Tutorial

May 28, 2013 by Patti 22 Comments

So many people tell me that they can never find anything good at the thrift stores in the areas where they live.  I don’t think my thrift stores are any better than anyone else’s but I do think that if you go with an idea in mind of what you’re looking for you will eventually find it.  Take a peek at my most recent thrift store transformation.

Now take a look at the before.
What do you think of this lovely swan tray that I found?
I think she has lived a full life and is ready to be put to rest!
I must admit that I feel kind of bad saying that because I could tell  from the way it was put together that this was some other eager DIYer’s very own craft project.
Here is a picture of the bottom with the peeling faux wood contact paper.  Yup, it is definitely time for a change.
As soon I saw this tray it made me think of an ad I’d seen in Grandinroad catalog for these beautiful Monet Garden Trays.

I loved the colors and the flowers and the fact that they looked old.  However, a set of two for $199 was way beyond my budget!
So I set to work with my Home Made Chalk Paint
(Recipe #3 right HERE), applying an off white base coat and then two coats in a custom mixed color made from leftover Valspar paint samples. I couldn’t tell you what they were and wouldn’t likely be able to reproduce the exact color again, but it turned out similar to Annie Sloan’s Antibes green (I have such fun mixing colors that I often forget to keep track of what and how much).
I applied a base of aged looking parchment paper to the top of the tray with ModPodge, and added some pictures of flowers, printed off from The Graphics Fairy website.  I thoroughly covered the back of each piece of paper with the medium.
Once all my flowers were in place I applied a couple of coats of ModPodge over the top everything, allowing the it to dry between each coat.  Notice the wrinkles in the paper?  No, I wasn’t being sloppy.  Honest!  I actually crinkled up my parchment paper before placing it to get the look I was going for.  When it was thoroughly soaked with ModPodge I smoothed the wrinkles with my fingers, to push out the air bubbles.
After my tray dried completely I distressed the wood, allowing both bare wood and white paint to show through, and applied a dark wax (ASCP).  I was careful not to touch the top of the decoupaged area with wax as I later applied a couple of coats of MinWax Polycrylic to protect the surface from water.
Though you can’t see it in the “before” picture the swan tray originally had shiny brass hardware on the corners. I took the hardware off and painted it with Rustoleum’s Metallic Oil Rubbed   Bronze spray paint.  This is a new favorite!
What do you think?
Okay, so I know it doesn’t look like a $100 tray,
but then neither did the $100 tray!

Right now I’m enjoying using this tray as a base for different vignettes on my kitchen island.  In September she will go along with me to the French Flea Market.

I wouldn’t have given this tray a second glance if I hadn’t seen an ad for beautiful trays in a high end catalog.  I actually get excited about my junk mail when it contains catalogs! I pull them out and put them in a special place to enjoy when I have some quality browsing time.  Then I search for ideas and tear out pages for my inspiration file. I make sure to go back to my idea file often to remind myself of what to be on the lookout for.  I also find great ideas in various Flea Market and Cottage Style magazines and from the Internet via Pinterest, Etsy and, of course, my fellow bloggers.

So, keep hitting the thrift stores, flea markets and garage sales, but go often and go with a purpose!  With a little practice, you too will begin to see the potential for Old Things becoming New.

     Blessings,

An Old Door Made New Through Decoupage

July 31, 2012 by Patti 8 Comments

A little over a year ago, while browsing through an antique store with a friend, we came across a really fun decorative piece. It was a very old door, hand painted in a whimsical floral motif and heavily distressed for an aged look. We talked about where it could be used at home. Turned on it’s side, it would make a beautiful headboard . . . it would also be a great way to change out a plain old pantry door . . . or, in the right space, (like the narrow wall in my dining room) it would look great just hung on the wall. But the price . . . not in my budget! I returned to the store again later when I saw a 30% OFF SALE sign outside but this particular piece was not discounted. I went back once again, this time taking my husband along (have I told you he likes to shop? What a lucky girl I am!) I wanted him along for moral support as I tried to make a deal with the shop owner (something I really do not like to do). I also secretly hoped that if she said, “No”, hubby would say something like, “Oh dear, sweet wife of mine, I know how much you have your heart set on that door. Let me buy it as a gift for you”. Alas, it didn’t play out that way.

That very night my brain starting churning out a plan to have a door just like the one I’d grown to love. I don’t know about you, but my best ideas come to me in bed. Early in the morning I was on the computer, searching for old doors. When my husband arose, we were off to a salvage store in Seattle to pick up the door I found online (the one shown above). But . . . how was I going to make my door look like the one in the antique store? I paint furniture, I paint walls, but I don’t paint “things” like flowers, or kitties, or people! The other part of my bedtime musings had given me the answer. DECOUPAGE of course!

I had fabric on hand (a runner from World Market would now be repurposed!) so the only other stop we had to make was at the craft store to buy some Mod Podge.

After painting my door with several layers of different colored paint, I used my sanding sponge to distress it just like the one in the antique store. I was then ready to apply my flowers. This part is so simple that I feel silly writing about it but, for anyone who doesn’t know how to use Mod Podge, this is what I did: I carefully cut out the flowers I wanted to use and laid them out on the door in the pattern I liked. Then I removed them, painted a coat of Mod Podge where each flower would go (just like glue) and laid the flowers back down. I then proceeded to paint several coats of Mod Podge over the top of the fabric, allowing it to dry about an hour between each coat. Afterwards, I applied a dark wax (Annie Sloan) over the top of the entire door and buffed it when it was dry.

And this is the end result. You can see the different colors of paint showing through where it has been distressed and the bright colors have been toned down by the dark wax. Personally, I like it just as much as the door in the antique store which, by the way, is still there. I stopped in two days ago, drawn in by a 30-50% OFF SALE sign on the roadway. The door in the antique store is still beyond my budget and still not discounted!

Don’t you love the old door hardware with the fleur de lis?

The salvaged door cost $20, the old hardware another $20, the paint and fabric, I had on hand, and the Mod Podge Satin, less than $5.00.

I’m pretty happy with my door art and I now have a few more ideas for doors running through my head. So many ideas . . . so little time!
