Ideas for Adding The French Country Look to Your Kitchen

July 14, 2015 by Patti 35 Comments

Blue and white porcelain pieces, white ironstone, mismatched silver and well patina’d copper, layers of cutting boards, weathered baskets, crisp greenery and fragrant lavender, slipcovered dining chairs, French ticking, burlap and old lace.

These are the things that make me think of a French Country Kitchen.

As promised last week, I’m back to share some touches I’ve added to my kitchen to give it more personality and reflect my tastes.  I love a French Country kitchen but I don’t have the budget to do a complete kitchen makeover so I’ve added touches of French Country to an already great kitchen.

I’ll begin with some full shots before zooming in on the details.

My Kitchen 001

This is the view looking from the dining nook into the kitchen.

My Kitchen 065

Scanning from left to right, this is the wall behind the formal dining room where we have our coffee nook and kitchen storage.

My Kitchen 023

Looking down the length of the island to my cooking space with the Powder Room and Den behind.  The granite is very nice, though not the white like what I had in my old house.  I KNOW . . . and I continue to be thankful that I have such nice granite.

Kitchen with french touches 013

This is another view of my cooking area . . .

Kitchen with french touches 010

. . . and the kitchen sink where I see all variety of birds.  My favorite are the Red Cardinals which we didn’t have in the Pacific NW.

Kitchen with french touches 016

This is the view from the kitchen toward the dining nook.

My Kitchen 073

We have an antique dining table here which belonged to my husband’s grandparents and where three generations of children have done their homework. I know you can’t see it very well in this picture but it is a gem!

My Kitchen 075

Here you can see that directly across from the dining nook is my desk area on the right.

My Kitchen 078

This is the last shot you’ll see of my desk for awhile. It’s where I edit photos, write blog posts, pin ideas, and try real hard not to let it get out of control with paperwork! Since moving in, I still haven’t spent the time to organize this area or to make it as pretty as I want it to be.

One. Step. At. A. Time.

Kitchen with french touches 007

Now for some close-ups of the details I’ve added to my kitchen space to make it a little bit country and a little bit French.

Thrifted Kitchen Chandy 015

One of the very first things we added to our home was this Thrift Store Chandy that we gave a good makeover with paint, new shades and magnetic crystals.

My Kitchen 069

The tabletop is sporting three runners right now.  The bottom runner has the look of a French grain sack, laid across that is a vintage crocheted lace runner, and atop that is a rustic burlap runner.

My Kitchen 071

I love the Scripture verse on it from Ecclesiastes 3:1.

Kitchen with french touches 008

The linen slipcovers are a recent addition, purchased from World Market.  They replace more formal covers that I’ve saved for when I might feel like being formal again.

Kitchen with french touches 002

I’m fortunate enough to have a full set of Villeroy & Boch Petite Fleur dishes that belonged to my mother.  Some day they’ll belong to my youngest daughter.  For now, she doesn’t have room so I’ll enjoy them while I can.

My Kitchen 080

In the dining/desk area I have various silver serving pieces that I’ve mostly collected at thrift stores . . .

My Kitchen 081

. . . and some pieces from my collection of blue and white (some vintage, some new), as well as a few white ironstone pieces (real and faux).

My Kitchen 034

Moving on to the pot rack, where I’ve displayed some pieces of antique copper that I’ve collected along the way.

My Kitchen 035

I just love the beautiful green patina on these pots.

Weathered Baskets 023

These are the baskets I shared about last week in creating a Vintage Look With Chalk Paint.

You can view the paint colors I used and a tutorial HERE.

My Kitchen 029

I like to keep something pretty to look at on my kitchen island.  Since it’s summer I couldn’t resist displaying this rustic pot filled with lavender, alongside a piece from my blue and white collection and a fun rusty iron birdbath.

Apron Hanger blue plate 002

In the background our aprons hang from a vintage blue willow plate (I’m lucky enough to have several of these plates from my husband’s family).  Also note the pretty blue Seahawks apron on the left.  Mr. OTN’s BBQ attire!

My Kitchen 003

Now for my stove area.  We have great plans to raise the vent and build a custom hood that will extend up to the ceiling.  We also want to add a tile backsplash all the way up the wall.  Mr. OTN and I are still wrestling over wall color.  He loves the bright and cheery look of yellow and I’m leaning toward a change.  No surprise that!  The kitchen is not at the top of our list of “to-do’s” right now though so, in the meantime, I’ve placed a French Bistro sign in front of my current stove backsplash . . . which is a mirror.  Yes, it is hard to clean a mirror every time you cook!  Not only that, but there are times that I really don’t want to look at myself while  cooking.  This morning would be a case in point.  At 11:47 a.m. and still in my pajamas . . . I’m afraid I’d scare myself!

My Kitchen 004

More blue and white and a touch of greenery at hand to clip and use in the great Southern dishes I’m learning to cook here in SC.

My Kitchen 006

This corner of my countertop holds a collection of breadboards and more old silver.  I sort of like the look of tarnished silver but I do polish it at least once a year.  OH how I miss having my oldest daughter at home to do that job.  She might tell you that this job is the reason why she moved clear across the country!

My Kitchen 009

I like the natural element of wood in my kitchen and think the grain in cutting boards is so pretty.  Did you notice my Washington State cutting board peeking out from under my watermark?

My Kitchen 008

I use a silver pitcher to keep my cooking utensils close at hand.

My Kitchen 017

What would a good French Country kitchen be without a couple of chalk boards?  This one was an old picture that I found at a garage sale and made into a chalk board.

My Kitchen 059

This “coffee time” chalk board was something my husband brought home for me recently thinking it “looked like” me.  Suh-weet!

My Kitchen 020

More greenery.  I’ve placed boxwood topiaries on either side of the sink.

You can see my post on Decorating With Boxwood and my Source for buying preserved boxwood in bulk right HERE

My Kitchen 012

Finally, on the end of my counter a tray to hold some pretties, including silver serving pieces and miniature spoons that belonged to my mom, more blue and white, and a vintage lace doily . . .

My Kitchen 014

Ticking Dish Towels 001

. . . right next to a matching basket that holds my napkins.  I found these sweet blue and white dish towels (which make great napkins) online at Keebleoutletsstore.com. These commercial grade towels are on sale right now for $18.99 per dozen!

Kitchen with french touches 016

So that’s my kitchen.  It was a great kitchen to begin with but now it feels like it really belongs to me and reflects my style. It’s pretty obvious that I’m drawn to the look of French Country  but anyone can give their kitchen a personal touch simply by adding items that you love.  Start pinning kitchen ideas on Pinterest or create a design board on Olioboard.  When you begin to see a pattern develop you’ll realize your own personal style.

I have a couple more touches I’ve began working on for my kitchen which I’ll be back to share with you next, along with the full tutorials.

Here’s a sneak peek at:

Dog bed 008

Cozy on her new French Grain Sack Dog Bed (it turned out SO cute) . . .

La Creperie 005

. . . and a tutorial I’ve been working on for creating your own Rustic French Signage.  I think the French Bistro sign (shown in this post) is kinda’ cute but I’ll teach you how to make a sign that looks vintage and not a mass produced knock-off.

I do hope you’ll come back and join me for the full reveals.

Until then, be blessed!

My Signature

NOTE:  I did not receive compensation for any of the items mentioned in this post.  They are simply products I use and wanted to share with you my DEAR readers!

Shabby Lamp Shade Makeover & More!

June 17, 2014 by Patti 17 Comments

Each day is filled with possibilities if we only open our eyes to see . . .

So . . . I’m usually the one searching for furniture on Craigslist, for that something special that I can transform with a little paint.  Lately though, I’ve been listing pieces that I never had the chance to get to.  Last week a young woman came out to look at a lighted bookcase and ended up buying some other items that were beginning to pile up in my “Garage/Vintage/Flea Sale” pile.  Mr. OTN says I can’t take everything with me across the country so I’ve been doing a lot of sorting and will be having a few sales throughout the summer.  Here are a few items I sold that were leftover from the sales I did last Fall:

First of all was this Shabby Lamp Shade.  She already had it loaded into her SUV when I pulled it out and started taking pictures explaining that, “I haven’t blogged on that yet!”

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 027This vintage lamp has been chalk painted, rag tied, key fringed, and shabby chic’d to perfection.

LampshadeSweet, yes?

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 012Here is how she looked before, in her full Victorian glory.  I must tell you that some people liked her better this way.  While I was doing a chalk painting display at our Old Things New Holiday Open House I had several people that looked at the before and after (there were two lamps) who thought this one was the after!  They really liked it too!  And that’s okay because they are two totally different styles.  Not everyone is into ripped rag lamp shades!

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 015I placed a key plate on top for a decorative touch . . .

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 017. . . and hung miscellaneous keys from the bottom of the frame.

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 019As I sold my items to this young woman named Kari we talked about our mutual love of things French and things Shabby.  In very short order I was to tell her my story of moving and she was to tell me her story of wanting to sell the furniture pieces she has been painting.  We talked about the Queen Bee French Flea that I was a part of last year and I told her that I didn’t think they were going to be able to do it this year as they were still without a venue.

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 022By the end of our half hour or so together we shared other personal life stories and became fast . . . though fleeting . . . friends.  We both felt a special connection had been made.

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 023Now for the tutorial.  Very simple.  I had some old sheets that had become so soft with age (don’t you love the feel of sheets like that?) that they ended up with one long rip from a doggy claw.  Very sad!  So what do you do with old sheets?  Make lampshades of course . . . or pretty rosettes, or ruffles for pillows, or just about anything the creative mind can imagine.

I tore strips which I draped over the top wire frame of the lamp . . .

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 024 . . . brought the two ends together around the bottom frame . . .

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 025. . .  and tied them together with a nice bow.

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 026The keys were tied on with a creamy satin ribbon to create a “fringe” on the lamps.

Hmmm . . . I didn’t even notice when I snapped the picture but this one says “journey”, the very thing we’re about to embark on!

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 028And now for a few more things I sold my new friend.

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 032Simple pillows made from drop cloth fabric and adorned with ironed on graphics from The Graphics Fairy.  This is actually two graphic prints, one superimposed upon the other, and  I got the idea from Debbie at Confessions of a Plate Addict.  She shares MANY great tutorials on her site!

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 029This is another fun graphic that I outlined with a drop cloth ruffle.

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 031

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 035And finally, a simple Queen Bee.

Launching the pontoon and items I sold on Craigslist 036Within a few days of our chance meeting, my young friend was able to connect with the woman in charge of the Queen Bee French Flea and has helped in procuring their next venue.  I’m excited for her that she will be participating in her very first French Flea market, just like I did last year!  I’ll most likely be moved cross country by the time the show comes this year, but maybe a few of the things I sold to my new friend will receive a new coat of paint and make it there without me!

A few days ago my young friend Kari sent me a photo from her iPhone of her first commissioned piece and it made me smile.  She’ll also be back for some display pieces I have set aside for her in my garage.

It’s funny how things work out.  When you wake up in the morning you never know whom you might meet that day or what role you might end up playing in each others lives.

Blessings,

My Signature-001P.S. I will be back with another post about my Budget Kitchen Remodel.  I’m working on a list of the most important things you need to know about chalk painting kitchen cabinets.

Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House

November 27, 2013 by Patti 8 Comments

So, a couple of weeks ago I had this hair brained idea. Our guest cottage became open unexpectedly, leaving us with just a few weeks before the arrival of our Christmas visitors.  Not being one to waste a good opportunity I asked Mr. OTN if we (my friend Linda and I) could host an Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House (wow, that’s a mouthful) and sell some of the things we’ve been working on.  Knowing that this would mean a bit of craziness around our house he gave us the go ahead (love him!) and we started working on getting it together this week.  Actually, we started getting it together just yesterday as we were busy with another bazaar last weekend.  I’ll give  you all the details at the end of the post but for now, here are some of the items we’ll be selling:

Seasonal decor . . . 02-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 002

03-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 005

18-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 062

09-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 026

01-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 001Purses and jewelry . . .

13-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 038Some mod decor . . .

04-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 008A coastal themed room . . . after all, that is the decor of our little cottage . . .

15-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 04314-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 040A bit of French Country . . .

05-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 010

23-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 078

07-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 013This is one of the pieces Linda’s been working on with a special paint that gives a patina’d metal effect to just about anything . . .

17-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 058And lots of miscellaneous pretties . . .

12-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 032

11-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 031

24-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 080

08-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 023Finally, I’m selling some of my Patti’s Perfect Paint Powder that can be mixed with any latex paint to create a homemade chalk paint.  After testing many home made chalk paint recipes this is the one I find to be superior.  I’ve packaged some  up some to sell locally and, who knows, maybe I’ll find a market it for it  on my blog as well.  I’ll be demonstrating how it works while I sell!

19-OTN Holiday Cottage Open House 066So, here are all the details.  Our Old Things New Holiday Cottage Open House (that is STILL a mouthful) will be held this Friday and Saturday from 9-3.  I would love for you to come on by if you are in the area.  Along with our own handcrafted items  we  have a couple of friends who’ve contributed to our “store”.  Our cottage by the lake is THE place to be on Black Friday (and Saturday).  We’d love for you to come have a cup of hot chocolate and stick around awhile for a little visit.

Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint and a Funeral Parlor Table!

October 19, 2013 by Patti 20 Comments

I am so excited to share with you my first experience using Miss Mustard Seed (MMS) Milk Paint.  Though I’ve been painting with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (ASCP) and my Homemade Chalk Paint for quite awhile now I had never tried MMS until this past summer.  It wasn’t that I didn’t want to try it but just that it wasn’t available in a shop anywhere near my home.

05-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 009

So a couple of months ago when I went online . . .  ONCE AGAIN . . .  to see where MMS Milk Paint was available, and when I found it in a city less than twenty miles away, I hit the road!

1-014This is the little side table that I wanted to try this fantastic new paint on.  A friend picked it up from the junk pile at a funeral parlor.  Can you believe they were going to throw this away?  It was in really good shape and the color was okay but I really, really, really wanted to try MMS’s Kitchen Scale.  That’s the name of a color in case you were wondering.

1-Kitchen Scale Table 001THIS is Kitchen Scale . . .  beautiful color doncha’ think?  Now while the color is amazing the most wonderful thing about MMS milk paint is that you NEVER KNOW how your painted piece is going to turn out.  It is always a surprise and . . . YES . . . I love surprises!  So I painted it on and waited as patiently as I could to see what would happen.  Would it grab all the paint color and remain this beautiful clear blue color or would it do that funny thing that thing it is sometimes known to do, and begin to bubble and peel?  Fortunately the paint began to bubble in several places.  I say “fortunately” because that is exactly what I was hoping for!

1-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 013 (2)  Several places became chippy as you can see by the picture above, exposing the white paint beneath the blue.  I LOVE this about this paint!

1-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 013Once the first coat was dry I painted a second coat which caused a little more of the bubbling effect.  Then I took a scraper to the chippy places and gently scraped off the excess paint, lightly sanded the chipped edges and then sealed it all with soft wax, which stops the chipping process.  I love chippy furniture and with this paint there is no need to figure out where to use the sanding block to get the best distressed look.  The paint does it for you.

07-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 012The table top wasn’t a beautifully grained piece of wood so I decided to paint it with ASCP Old White and then applied a graphic that I purchased online using my favorite METHOD for transferring typography onto wood.  I finished it off with clear wax with just a dab of dark wax added.  I did use my sanding sponge on the top to distress the edges.

1-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 013 (2)-001One final thing I added was the lion’s head pulls that I found at a local antique store.  They were all slightly different colors so I spray painted them with Rustoleum’s Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint.

08-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 014I took this Funeral Parlor Table turned Sweet Frenchy Table to the Queen Bee French Flea Market last month and she sold right away.  I was a wee bit sad but I didn’t really have room for any more furniture in my own home!  This is a color I use in my home a LOT though so I may be repainting something I already have in the near future.  Who knows, Mr. OTN may come home to another surprise.  I think he loves surprises too!

05-Queen Bee French Flea 2013 009I’ve used many different types of paints on the furniture I’ve painted and I tend to paint and even repaint a piece until I get it just PERFECT!  Of course “perfect” to me is usually very unique and very, very imperfect.  I’m so happy to have a new type of paint to use on future projects and I do believe I will be using MMS paints a LOT!  What about you?  Do you like surprises? Have you tried MMS Milk Paint?  Do you have a favorite color?  I’d love to hear about your experience 🙂

     Blessings,

My Signature

P.S.  In case you were wondering, Marion (Miss Mustard Seed) is not paying me to write about her paint line.  This post simply reflects my pure unadulterated love of MMS Milk Paint!

DIY Junky Chicken Wire Cloche

October 6, 2013 by Patti 62 Comments

11-Chicken Wire Cloche 022Have you ever been casually browsing through second-hand stores when you come across random items that, when grouped together, cause you to become over-the-top excited, as you realize in a “light bulb moment” just what they are destined to become?!   The kind of excitement that causes you rush home and get right to work on that project in spite of all the other things around the house that are calling out for attention?  That’s EXACTLY what happened on my last junkin’ trip when I came across the fabulous items I used to make these Junky Chicken Wire Cloches.1-Fun junk from The Second Hand Rose 004 (2)The last time I paid a visit to The Second Hand Rose store owner Terry took me behind the locked gate into his back yard of  broken and not so nice items.  I couldn’t believe my great fortune!  Here are just a few of the things I came home with that day.  An acorn knob, an old faucet handle, two silver plated stands and a couple of pocket watches for Mr. OTN (these will not be a part of this junky project but I do see them in a future vignette).

2-Chicken Wire Cloche 004Add to these items a roll of chicken wire that was bouncing around in my garage (the remains of my Chicken Wire Message Board),

04-Chicken Wire Cloche 004some decorative metal sheets (the remains of another project I haven’t yet posted about),

05-Chicken Wire Cloche 005 and a can of Rustoleum’s Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint, also on hand in my garage.

All  of these items together cried out, “Junky Chicken Wire Cloche!”  If you’re like me you get that, right?  So here is the “how to” for making one of your own:

WARNING:  Making a chicken wire cloche is simple but it can also be dangerous.  I’d advise wearing gloves to avoid injury.  That said, I didn’t wear gloves myself because I like to work au naturel so I can get the whole experience . . . OR . . . I was in too much of a hurry to go find the silly gloves!

3-Chicken Wire Cloche 005Once you’ve measured the diameter of your base make your piece of chicken wire just a little bit smaller to fit inside the base, then crimp the edges of the wire over to hold the shape (acrylic nails are a great tool for this step).  Snip off any excess with wire cutters.

When all the ends of the wire are secured you’ll end up with a really tall tube of chicken wire.  Once you decide how tall you’d like your cloche to be you’ll start scrunching the wire together at that point.  It is helpful to have a big pair of pliers to aid in the scrunching.  When completely scrunched (fun word) cut your chicken wire with a sharp pair of wire cutters.  You can see that this piece of wire actually made two cloches.

Next, you can add any kind of top you’d like . . . a doorknob, a cabinet pull, an old piece of jewelry, etc.   I attached the cloche topper I used here by using my pliers to scrunch the chicken wire around it.  It held pretty tight just as it was but I added a piece of flexible wire to secure it fully.

10-Chicken Wire Cloche 020. . . and this is the old faucet topper.

After attaching the decorative tops I taped them off and sprayed the chicken wire with the oil rubbed bronze spray paint.  I also cut a circle out of the decorative metal to make a “floor” for the cloche and spray painted that at the same time.

That’s pretty much it.  Fill your cloche with some fun things from around the house and there you have it.

Junky Chicken Wire ClocheI must admit I am a bit smitten with cloches.  I have one on my coffee table that I change with the seasons, and I did a whole post on Christmas Cloches last year. If you’d like you can view that HERE. Do you use cloches in your home decor?  What do you like to fill them with?  Hmmm . . . perhaps the pocket watches I found on this junking trip will be a part of my New Year’s display.  Happy clocheing to you!

     Blessings,
