French Pillows & Ruffled Slipcovers – Part 2

August 26, 2016 by Patti 13 Comments

Patio Courtyard 033Hey y’all!  I’m back with Part 2 of French Pillows & Ruffled Slipcovers.  In Part 1 (HERE)  I shared instructions for sewing an Envelope Pillow . . . the easiest pillow in the world!  In Part 2 I will show you, step-by-step, how I sewed the Ruffled Slipcovers for my patio chairs.

These tutorials are a result of your requests after my post about creating a French Courtyard Look on my backyard deck. You can view that post right HERE.

So here it is, for your sewing pleasure 🙂

These instructions are based on the particular type of patio chair I have but with a little ingenuity adjustments can be made to fit a different style.  I made my slipcovers with ruffles on three sides of the chair (you can do all four if you prefer) and added extra fabric across the back to tuck under the chair seat. This, along with ties, helps to keep the slipcover in place.

Ruffled Chair Slipcovers 001

Step 1: Remove your chair seat from the chair and make a pattern by laying it on a piece of lightweight cardboard and tracing around it.

Step 2: Cut out the cardboard pattern, lay it on top of your fabric of choice (I used painter’s drop cloth fabric) and trace around it with a pencil . . . then STOP . . .read the next part carefully!

Ruffled Drop Cloth Table Cloth 003. . . Don’t cut your fabric on that line!  On the front and two sides of your chair cover make your cut approximately  5/8″ away from the pencil line.  On the back side of the chair cover make your cut approximately 3″ away from the pencil line  (or long enough to tuck under the back of your particular type of chair seat).

Ruffled Chair Cover 002Step 3: Hem back edge of chair cover by turning edge under 1/4″, then turning under another 1/4″ and hemming it on the sewing machine.  Do this step before moving on to the ruffle.

Ruffled Slipcover TutorialStep 4: Measure the distance from the back right corner of your chair seat, all the way around the front and to the back left corner.  Double this number.  This is the measurement you will use for the length of your ruffle.

Step 5: Cut a 6-8″ wide piece of fabric (depending on how wide you want your ruffle to be) the length of the doubled measurement in Step 4 above.

Step 6: Sew two rows of basting stitch 1/4″ apart, along one long edge of the ruffle piece.  Knot one end and gently pull threads to gather.

Drop cloth tablecloth 002Step 6: Adjust gathers to fit your ruffle to the three sides of the chair top, and pin in place.

Ruffled Slip Covers 002Step 7: Sew ruffle to chair top and remove basting stitches.

Ruffled Slip Covers 003Step 8: Top stitch along the edge, close to the ruffle for a finished look.  Hem the raw edge of your ruffle by turning under 1/4″ then turning under 1/4″ again and hemming on the sewing machine.

Moving right along to chair ties:

Ruffled Chair Slipcovers 005Step 9: Cut four ties for each chair.  Mine were 16″ long x 2″ wide. Fold the short ends of the ties under 1/4″ and press in place, then fold the two long edges inward (in the same direction as the short turns) until the raw edges touch.

Ruffled Chair Slipcovers 004Fold the entire length in half again and stitch the folded edges closed on the sewing machine.

Patio Courtyard 060Step 10: At this point, if you have a buttonholer, make button holes approximately 2″ from the hemmed back edge of the seat cover and in the correct position for the ties to wrap around an anchor (chair frame or slat) on the back seat of your chair (every chair will be unique).  Slide the ends of the ties through the open button holes and stitch them in place on the sewing machine.

Ruffled Chair Slipcovers 007Tie your ties into a bow onto the back  of the chair and tuck the excess fabric under the back of the chair seat.  Note: I actually couldn’t find my buttonholer so I cut a slit, slipped my ties through it, used fray check on the raw edges, and sewed the ties in place on the machine.

Voila’! There you have it.

Another request from my original post was for a tutorial for the Burlap Table Runner.  That will be an upcoming post later in the Fall.

Thank you SO much for taking an interest in the things I create here at Old Things New and for being so kind as to ask for more.  I am one lucky girl to have readers as sweet as you.

Blessings to you my friends,

Chalk Painted French Country Bar Stools

March 29, 2016 by Patti 35 Comments

Yesterday I sat out on my back deck enjoying the warmth of the sun shining down upon my skin and warming me all the way to the bone.  I love it when the weather is in the 70’s and all of the trees and bushes in my neighborhood are bursting into bloom.  It really is the most beautiful time of the year here in South Carolina.  I knew I had things to do but I couldn’t get myself up and motivated until I began to feel the burn on my fair arms.  Alas, I am “pigmentally challenged” (my hubby’s name for very white) and I can only stay a short time in the sun without sunscreen.

Barstools AfterI got a call from one of my doctors this morning and it turns out I’m Vitamin D deficient.  So much so that she is starting me on prescription strength Vitamin D!  Hallelujah!  This might be just the excuse I need to spend more time lounging in the sun – with my sunscreen of course 🙂

Bar Stools Before Paint So this is one of my French Country style bar stools and this is how they looked before.  The wood color was kind of orangey and didn’t go with the look I’m trying to achieve in my kitchen.  The wood is hard but not anything special SOOO . . . chalk paint to the rescue!

Painting my BarstoolsI started by painting the chairs a light color first and then trimmed them out with a darker color. I had Home Depot color match Annie Sloan Chalk Paint’s Country Grey and French Linen (I have an ASCP color card and I take that to the store whenever I want to get a color match). I purchased sample size containers and used my favorite homemade Chalk Paint Recipe.

Adding Highlights to my BarstoolsAfter the base and trim were painted I used a small brush to dab darker color into the crevices of the chairs . . .

Barstools . . . and lightly dry brushed over the Country Grey with French Linen.

Barstools I wasn’t at all careful about how I applied it because I knew it would all come out just the way I wanted it to look in the end.

Barstools I used a sanding sponge to sand back back any unwanted dark color.

Barstools AfterI finished up with my new favorite wax mixed with stain for added color (this gives it the same look as a dark wax and, like dark wax, any excess color can be removed by rubbing clear wax over it).  Can you see the sheen on the chairs?  They also have a very smooth feeling finish which I like better than the finish I get with soft wax.

Favorite furniture wax with chalk paintA “real” furniture builder friend recommended Minwax Paste Finishing Wax.  It contains carnuba wax which apparently creates a very hard finish.

By the way, I may have heated it just a tad to make it a little softer for mixing and applying.  Shhh . . . this may be a dangerous thing to do . . . at least as dangerous as things get in my world 🙂

Barstools

Barstools

Barstools I did use some soft wax though, on the leather chair seats.  Unfortunately, I splattered the seats with paint when I was painting the caned backs.  The seat surfaces became dull when I cleaned off the paint so I decided to see what a little soft wax would do.

Soft Wax on LeatherI waxed, let them dry for about 15 minutes, and polished.  I love the sheen and even after a few months they are still shining bright!

Barstools

Barstools I thought of making ruffled drop cloth seat covers but it would be a shame to hide such pretty legs.  Maybe in the future.

Barstools Now – the wall color – the yellow in this room is still bothering me and I’ve been picking up paint swatches with thoughts toward a future change.  I’m leaning toward Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams. Sigh – not until I whittle down my long list of to-do’s though.  Priorities you know 🙂

Chalk Painted French Country Bar Stools Now it is on to outdoor projects.  Filling planters with flowers, cleaning patio furniture, scheduling a lunchean on my deck.  What Spring projects are you up to where you live?  Is your weather warming too or are you still in a winter chill?  Time flies so quickly and we will be feeling the heat of Summer in no time at all.

Blessings friends,

Spring Bouquet in a Garden Urn

March 1, 2016 by Patti 30 Comments

Spring Arrangement 003Did you read my post about The Lie of Perfectionism a couple of weeks ago?  Yeah well, I may have had to read that again myself before sharing my floral arrangement with you today.  I’ve never taken a flower arranging class in my life but I know the look I like.  I’m pretty sure a professional would take one look at my arrangement and want to fix it for me.  In fact, I did ask the opinion of a friend who has won awards for her floral arrangements and she had some suggestions for me, but after playing around with it a bit more I stayed with what was pleasing to my eye.

Spring Arrangement 002When I look into my dining room, which is several times a day as I go up and down the stairs, I feel happy.

Spring Arrangement 001 The sun streams through the plantation shutters onto my dining room table and reminds me that warm days are right around the corner.

Spring Arrangement 007This large bouquet is filled with some of my favorite flowers and, quite by accident in an attempt to fill a bare spot, a sweet bird’s nest with gold leafed eggs.

Spring Arrangement 008I have neither the time nor the money to create a new arrangement of fresh flowers every week, but over time I’ve invested in some really good faux flowers which I’ve mixed with some really average faux flowers, to create an arrangement that makes me smile.

Spring Arrangement 009A little burlap twisted around the stems of the flowers gives it the shabby touch I adore,

Spring Arrangement 012and a big French garden urn at the base of it all makes it a statement piece.

Spring Arrangement 013Nope, not even near perfect, but Perfectly Imperfect just like me!

Blessings friends 😉

French Country Drop Cloth Tablecloth

February 12, 2016 by Patti 37 Comments

Let me entertain you, let me make you smile!

Okay, so I’m not going to do a few tricks like Gypsy Rose Lee but I will tell you the story of my yesterday . . . the day that nearly had me in tears.  After that, I’ll give you a little tutorial for creating your own French Country Drop Cloth Tablecloth.

The day began with a flat – TOTALLY FLAT – tire, which I really had no time for.  Next came the frantic text to the hubby who is working extremely long hours as the whole computer system at his work is changing and he barely has time to breathe let alone deal with the other stuff of life.  Of course he called me back right away and assured me that all I had to do was call AAA and everything would be okay.

Next came the call to the lady at AAA who didn’t recognize my card number, or my name, or my husband’s name, and after doing some research informed me that my membership was never transferred over from Washington State.  I told her that I knew that it had been transferred because I had already used AAA’s service for a tow to the shop when my old car broke down on the side of the highway.  Of course, there was absolutely NO record of that occurrence.

Since I assured her that I had the card in my hand and that we had been members since 1994 she told me I could purchase a new plan and, for a same day fee, could “reinstate” our service and get the services of a tow truck.  I somehow had the feeling that she didn’t believe me but   . . . I was a desperate woman.

Then came the panic of looking in my wallet only to find that my Master Card was missing and being told by the AAA representative that she couldn’t accept anything but a card over the phone, followed by the whole process of making phone calls to places I might have left it, all the time knowing that I would have no way of driving to get it if someone had it, and finally looking in a place I would never put it, but where I obviously did put it, and the call back to get that silly AAA card “reinstated.”

Two hours later the tow truck driver arrived and put the spare on and I headed off to Firestone, where I’d already made an appointment for a new tire.  Life is good.

Arriving at Firestone I’m told they don’t have said tire in stock but can have it “in no time” so I sat down with my laptap to wait.  A long wait.  A longer wait.  An excruciatingly long wait due to the fact that even though I had my laptop I didn’t have any reading glasses to see what I was reading, let alone writing!  I’m pretty sure someone out there got a very strange message from me yesterday.

Now while this seems like a minor tale of distress compared things that others may be going through, it was just the last straw in a series of crazy things that have been happening in our lives lately.  The tears wanted to come but they DID NOT.  As I messaged a friend last night who asked if I was okay, ” I wanted to cry but I am woman, hear me roar!”  One day I will surely laugh at this story 🙂

Ruffled Drop Cloth TableclothSo this is my ruffled French country tablecloth made out of my favorite linen-look fabric ever, painter’s drop cloths.  Let’s get started with a tutorial.  I’ll keep it short and sweet.

I always begin by washing and drying my drop cloths on the highest setting  to make sure there will be no shrinkage later.

Ruffled Drop Cloth TableclothI placed my drop cloth on top of my table and used a pen to outline the table top.  This tablecloth is custom fit to my table with three leaves in place, which is the size I (almost) always leave it.  Why am I telling you this?  I guess as sort of a disclaimer because I’d hate for you to make this tablecloth and realize that you made it too small or too big for the size you would normally leave your table.

Ruffled Drop Cloth TableclothNext I cut 5/8″ away from my marking to allow for seam allowance.

Ruffled Drop Cloth Tablecloth

After measuring the circumference, or outer boundary, of the table I doubled that distance and cut an 18″ wide strip of drop cloth (plus a little – for seam and hem) to the doubled length.  My drop cloth wasn’t large enough to cut one piece that long so I did have to piece it together in a couple of places.

Ruffled drop cloth tablecloth

I then basted and gathered my long strip of drop cloth to make the ruffle, laid it on top of the fabric piece that I’d cut to size on the table and pinned it in place, right sides together.

Ruffled drop cloth tablecloth

After sewing it together with a sturdy double stitch the fit was perfect.  I machine hemmed along the bottom edge.

Ruffled drop cloth tablecloth

Yes, it is kinda wrinkly and shabby looking but so am I and that’s my style 🙂

Ruffled drop cloth tablecloth

While I was at it I quickly whipped up a table runner from some great faux grain sack fabric I found online.

Ruffled drop cloth tablecloth

I bought quite a bit of it so maybe I’ll make some pillows, or some place mats, or who know what else.  You can find a link to that source HERE, and if you aren’t close to a hardware store that carries these wonderful linen-look painter’s drop cloths I’ve shared that link HERE.

Please note that any purchases made through Amazon here on my site do not cost you more than shopping directly through Amazon but do credit me with a small commission to help keep the lights on here at OldThingsNew.

Ruffled drop cloth tableclothBy the way, thanks for listening to my tale of woe today.  As Mr. OTN always says, “Pain shared is pain lessened.”

Blessings friends,

Vintage Music & an Antique Mirror

January 26, 2016 by Patti 30 Comments

A good friend looks out for you.  They will tell you if you have a piece of spinach caught in your teeth.  They will let you know that your slip is hanging below your dress – although that might be the look you’re going for since that’s currently the fashion.  They will surely let you know that you have an inch long hair growing out of your cheek.

Good friends take care of one another.

Vintage Music Antique Mirror

Another thing about good friends is that they love you just the way you are – midrift bulges; sags and wrinkles; squinty I-forgot-to-bring-my-glasses eyes.  They even love your, “Have I told you this story before?” memory.

Vintage Music Antique Mirror

Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to antique and vintage pieces.  With all their crackly, chippy, faded beauty they remind me just a little bit of myself.

I wanted to share with you today, another aspect of my At Long Last Dining Room Reveal, this sweet French Country mirror.

I fell in love with this mirror when I first saw it in an antique store back in Olympia, Washington.  It’s shabby goodness spoke to my heart.

Vintage Music Antique Mirror

I even liked the fact that the silvering on the back of the mirror was peeling because it gave me the perfect opportunity to place some of my vintage sheet music behind the mirror.

French Country Mirror2

This may be SHOCKING to some of you purists but I even chipped away a tiny bit more of the silver so the music would really stand out.

French Country Mirror

Fun Fact: Before the 19th century mirrors were silvered (the name of the mirroring process) with an amalgam of tin and mercury.  By the 19th century when this mirror was made the silvering process was done with real silver.  Today aluminum or other compounds are more often used.

Vintage Music Antique Mirror

I love the look of the musical notes on yellowed paper peeking out from behind the mirror, and it is such fun when someone walks into my dining room and stops to take a second look!

Vintage Music Antique Mirror

If you are going to be an antique you might as well be the best looking antique you can be!

Speaking of looking your best you might be interested in checking out my Fab Over Fifty Pinterest board to see some of the looks I love to wear, because who says we older gals aren’t worth a “second look?”

If you are a lover of mirrors like I am, you might also like my Mirror, Mirror on the Wall Pinterest board.

Just looking out for you FRIENDS 😉

Blessings,

I am Perfectly Imperfect Patti, daughter of the King, wife to the amazing Mr. OTN, mom to two grown daughters, a great son-in-law, and companion to two spoiled dogs. At Old Things New I share DIY’s, budget friendly home transformations, as well as posts about how God transforms our souls. I myself have been made new and I love to share what I’ve learned through WRITING and SPEAKING. To view a short Vimeo of “Our Story” (Mr. OTN and I) please follow the link at the top of the page.
