Freedom Friday – on Hospitality – Part Two!

January 23, 2015 by Patti 8 Comments

I was kind of excited last Sunday.  The NFL divisional playoffs were going to be on television and “our” team, THE Seattle Seahawks, were playing for the NFC championship, the game that would determine whether or not they were headed to the Superbowl.

“Hold on now,” you say, “Isn’t this supposed to be an inspirational post?”  Stick with me here and I’ll get to that!

I was excited about the game but I was also excited because my husband had invited our next-door neighbors over to watch with us and this was another chance to practice hospitality, that thing I’ve been learning more about since moving to the South (for Part 1 on Hospitality you can link back HERE).

“You know that Mark and Kathleen are Packer’s fans,” my husband slipped into the conversation as we were bustling around in preparation.

“What? Oh NOOOOOOOOOO!”

Yeah, you guessed it, THAT was the team we were playing against that day.

If you are a football fan you know that some people can be really hard-core about their teams.  I’m pretty hard-core about my team . . . but  a nice hard-core,

. . . like having a whole room of my house dedicated to the Hawks. Don’t judge!

I was beginning to wonder how this was all going to pan out . . .

Welcome to FREEDOM FRIDAY – A new devotional, emotional, spiritual and sometimes hysterical series that I will be sharing on occasional Fridays, in addition to my regular Old Things New posts. Why?  Because though once bound in chains Christ has set me free –  FREE to live, to love, to dance, to sing, to be who God created me to be!

It is easy (or at least easy-er) to practice hospitality toward people who think like we do, act like we do or kinda look like we do. Therefore, we tend to invite people into our lives who are a lot like us.  By the way, if you aren’t in the habit of practicing hospitality already that is a very good place to start.

Another view of our Seahawk room. Yes, even the couches are blue!

But what about those who are very different from us, those who have different values or belief systems, those who seem to have nothing in common with us, or who just don’t appeal to our “sensibilities”?!  There may even be those we’ve looked down on because of their lifestyle or their circumstances.  Oops, sorry, I know none of my readers have done that.  But the fact is that I have, and I’m not very proud of it.  It was when we found ourselves an integral part of the “recovery community” some 15 years ago, something I didn’t plan on being a part of, or really want to be a part of, that God began to change my heart.

As Christ followers we are called to LOVE.  As our Pastor Roy said in a recent sermon, “Love shouldn’t be something we TRY, it is [supposed to be] who we are.”

Love the Seahawk flying over the city of Seattle.

In my last FF post I gave you a list of things I’ve learned and things I’m learning about hospitality.  This is a continuation of that list but geared toward being hospitable toward those who don’t believe the way we do.  This can be a fellow Christ follower or someone who has a totally different belief system. You can link back HERE if you’d like to take a look at part 1 of the list.

The following are suggestions for you, and for me, to think about:

  • First of all, when offering hospitality to someone who believes differently it is good to ask ourselves the question, “How is my heart toward this person?” Matthew 9:36 says, “”When he saw the crowds, he [Jesus] had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
  • Ask God to give you a new perspective toward those who are different. Ask Him to show you the way He sees them.
  • Next, find out where the other person is “coming from”. What is their belief system, upbringing, and experience?  Ask, then listen.  Connect and be present.
  • Don’t have contempt for people who are acting according to their nature.  If they don’t know who they are in Christ how can they act like Christians?  In other words, don’t judge those who don’t know the truth.
  • Realize that people’s circumstances (i.e., homeless, drug addicted, divorced, etc.) are not who they are.
  • Realize that no matter where a person is in life, most people just want to be loved.
  • Imagine how you would want to be treated and then practice grace toward others.  Many people have never experienced grace, dignity and love.
  • When differences arise, and they will if you are sharing your faith, choose your battles carefully.
  • We can’t push people into thinking the way we do but we can be salt and light to them in other ways – Matthew 5:13-16.  Get creative!
  • Honor people by being gentle and respectful. Titus 3:1-2
  • Be calm, not emotional in any “discussion”.
  • Speak only if a difference can be made.
  • Think carefully about the words you use.
  • Slow down and don’t try to take people from zero to 100!
  • Remember how God redeemed your story. Titus 3:3-5
  • Finally, how do we present ourselves?  Are we authentic about who we are?
  • Be real with your mess-ups!  When people find out that you aren’t as “perfect” as you look on the outside they will begin to open up more about the messes in their own lives!
  • And . . . as shared in part 1 . . . be vulnerable, be goofy, and laugh.  We could all benefit from more laughter!

Awesome graphics!

Some questions to think about:

Am I using my corner of the world to practice hospitality toward others (whether that be in my home, the workplace, or the marketplace)?

Do I intentionally try to make others feel better about themselves (not in a phony way but honestly, because there is something good to be found in nearly everyone)?

Am I asking God to help me find the treasure in others?

Do I ask God to give me words of blessing for those I come across on a day-to-day basis?

Am I loving first and asking questions later?

The NFC Divisional playoffs were tense here at our house.  The Packers dominated our Hawks for the first three quarters and it looked bad for us.  I was amazed at how quiet my husband was in spite of the killing we were taking (GOOD MAN).  I was SO sad, thinking that our team didn’t have a chance, but impressed by our neighbor Mark who was kind enough to throw in a cheer or two for the Hawks when they made a good play . . . just because he knew how bad we were feeling.  In the end, the Hawks came from behind for a wild and crazy win and we did our best to restrain ourselves from becoming obnoxiously ecstatic!

My hubby and our young friend Holly.

My hubby and our young friend Holly, also from Seattle, in awe of a seemingly miraculous win!

We felt badly for our neighbors and their loss.  We are still friends though (I think) and look forward to getting together again soon to see if we can relate on more common ground.

Our gracious neighbors, still smiling after the game.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, please help us to learn how to practice hospitality to those who are different from us.  Show us your heart toward others and give us insight into the treasure within each and every person.  Teach us to be compassionate and how to love like You do.  Please remind us of the place we came from and break our hearts for those who still live in darkness.  Teach us when to use words to speak and when to remain silent. Holy Spirit guide us in all that we say and do.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Merry Christmas!

1-Christmas around the house 032

The Story Of Christmas
From Luke 2: 1-20

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, everyone into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

May the wonder of the true meaning of Christmas fill your hearts with great joy!

A New Journal For The New Year

January 4, 2013 by Patti 26 Comments

Putting into practice an attitude of gratefulness can be life changing.  Even when one is going through times that may not seem to hold much in the way of blessing, there is ALWAYS something to be grateful for.  In our search for that something, followed by the act of writing it down, there comes a proven shift in our way of thinking. This change in thinking reaches all the way down into our hearts where we begin to FEEL a difference in our attitudes.
We are transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2).

You don’t have to be a writer to keep a Journal, and a Gratitude Journal is a good place to start.  I’ve been journaling for several years now and sometimes I’ve purchased really pretty journals (at really pretty prices) and sometimes my writing has been done on whatever random notebook I’ve had on hand.  I came across the idea of covering mini-composition books (3-1/4″x4-1/2″) at The 36th Avenue and was inspired to make my own.  Here’s how:

I bought two different types and sizes of notebooks. The larger composition book is 9-3/4″ x 7-1/2″ and was .99 cents at Office Max.  The smaller spiral notebook is 7″ x 5″ and the cost was $1.99.  I like the smaller one a lot because it has a pocket inside that you can slip a little note into for gift giving.

I started by lining the cover up over the paper I would use to cover it,  then traced it and cut it out.
The notebooks can be covered with a variety of materials . . . leftover fabric from another project or an old article of clothing, scrapbooking paper, wallpaper or even thick wrapping paper.  Just glue your material on with a gluestick after you’ve cut it to size.
The black spine of the composition journal looked fine with this particular paper but I decided to use the reverse side of the scrapbooking paper for contrast.  The strip I cut and applied was about 2-3/4″ wide by 9-3/4″ long.  Note:  If you are using fabric it takes more glue to make it stick as the fabric tends to wick up the glue (a lesson learned by trial and error).
Now, for a little heavy reading atop the notebook while it dries!

So here are the books I covered today.  This is a quick and easy project, especially when done assembly line style.  I did 17 of them in one evening to give as gifts to friends (okay, so I’ll admit, it was one really LATE evening).

Some of the notebooks received an extra little embellishment, a fabric rosette . . . (tutorial here)
. . . or a stamp with a message and some old buttons . . .

. . . a cutout monogram with a button glued on to match the buttons on the paper . . .

. . . and a plain paper monogram in a contrasting color.  I used my handy dandy glue gun to add the embellishments.  You could get really imaginative and have a lot of fun with this part!

I can see the future of my journals now . . .

. . . instead of being in random places all over the house, my personal journals will now be uniform in size, organized by date, tied up with a pretty ribbon and artfully displayed on my office bookshelf.
Just another little vignette to make me smile 🙂
So . . . who or what are you grateful for in your life today?
Is there someone that has helped you or met a need?
Is there someone who has been kind to you or just blessed you with a smile?
Are you grateful for the beauty of creation around you?
Have you had any recent answers to prayer that you can be grateful for?
I am thankful for so very much . . . a warm fire on a cold night, a hot cup of tea, my family’s love, friends that accept me for who I am, doggie kisses (I know GROSS, right?) . . . my list goes on and on.  And while this may seem trivial in the grand scheme of things I’m also thankful for things that bring beauty to my home . . .
things like .99 cent journals covered with old scraps of fabric or paper.
These are the little things that brighten up my small corner of the world.
And always, I’m thankful for YOU,
Patti

Stemware Dipped in Chalkboard Paint

December 29, 2012 by Patti 24 Comments

2012 – I feel almost guilty that this year has been such a good year for me personally when, for so many others, there has been only hardship, pain, tragedy and loss.  In years past, I have had those times that I was thankful when the year came to an end and where my New Year’s wish was filled only with the hope of something better.  The way of life is a bit like a ferris wheel.  We buckle ourselves into the seat and wait for the ride.  Anticipation becomes reality as we feel the rush of being carried upwards to that highest place, where we can look out over the whole world and delight in the thrill of being on top of it all!  Sometimes the ferris wheel pauses here and we squeal with laughter and enjoy the moment to the fullest as we set our seats to rocking.  Other times there is no pause at all and as soon as we reach the top the ferris wheel begins it’s rapid descent.  We feel the drop in our stomaches as we head back down to the real world at the bottom of the wheel.  Then begins another ascent . . . and the ride continues . . .
Few people I know have perfectly steady and untroubled lives, . . . and those that do I really wonder about!!!  If we are honest with ourselves, and others, we all have problems and we all have things that just plain break our hearts.  I’ve been in places of brokenheartedness and I’m so thankful for those God sent into my life in those times to offer hope for a better future.  This has been a very good year for me.  A year of sweet memories made with family, old friendships renewed, new friends made, hard work rewarded . . . blessing upon blessing upon blessing.  It brings me such joy to be a part of  the ministry of Freedom Session and to be able to offer God’s hope to others.  I truly believe that there is a purpose to all the hardships we experience in life and I also believe that the core of our pain is the core of our purpose.
So . . . on to a celebration of the year to come!  This is a fun project that I saw on my favorite TV network, HGTV!  It is stemware dipped in chalkboard paint (this is not the same as the chalk paint that I use to paint furniture).  As you toast the New Year, you and your guests can write your names or initials on your glasses to keep track of them.
Since my focus is OLD THINGS NEW I took a trip to Goodwill where I found these glasses on sale for .99 cents apiece.  While I was there I also found a tarnished silver tray for $2.99.  I’ve been keeping my eyes open for one of these, with this specific purpose in mind, so how fortuitous that I found everything together!  You’ll notice from the close-up of the stem that this is not just plain glass but really nice crystal.  What a buy!

I had some chalkboard paint on hand from other projects . . .

. . .  so it was as simple as dipping the base of my glass into the paint like this . . .

. . . letting the excess paint drip back into the can . . .

. . . and then setting it on waxed paper to dry.  Note:  This will NOT work well if your paint is too thick.  An alternate method is to brush several thin coats of paint on with a soft paintbrush, allowing the paint to dry completely between coats.

While these were drying I painted the bottom of the silver tray with three coats of chalkboard paint, allowing it to dry between each coat.  Any chalk will work to write your message but I really like the chalk pens found in the bridal section at Michael’s.  They fly off the shelves fast so I bought two to keep on hand.

As you can see, our New Year’s toast will be made with a fine Sparkling Grape Juice!!!

And now, my wish for all of you in 2013 is that family bonds will be strengthened, friendships (old and new) will be rich and rewarding, you will find something positive in every situation (even when that’s hard to do!) and that God will bless you in every area of your lives.
Oh . . . just one more thing!  I want to wish you all the gift of SILLINESS and LAUGHTER . . .

. . . even when . . .

 . . . that means laughing . . .

 . . . at YOURSELF!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Patti 🙂
