Day 1 – My Life is Not a Hallmark Movie

October 1, 2018 by Patti 27 Comments

The WRITE 31 DAYS Challenge:  31 Days, Every Day, One Topic

 Day 1

I’ve heard of the 31 Days Writing Challenge for years and I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of taking one topic and focusing in on it for a whole month.  This year I decided to jump in and use the 31 days of October to share my Old Things New story.  My story of becoming the person who God created me to be.

WARNING:  This story doesn’t resemble a Hallmark movie. Not even a little bit!  The characters are more 3-dimensional, less predictable, and some even fall under the label of “notorious sinners.” (Luke 15:1 NLT)

What’s so special about me and my story? Not all that much really. I’m not a big time writer or speaker.  I don’t have a huge number of people eagerly awaiting my emails in their inboxes.  I’m just a regular ol’ person with a story that’s unique, just like your story is unique to you.

But what I’ve learned along the way is that when God lays something on your heart and urges you to do it, it’s always better to be obedient to listen to His voice.  Besides, my (God) story isn’t mine to keep.  The Bible tells me in II Cor. 1:3-4 that even as embarrassing as some parts of my story might be, it’s meant to be shared with others who might need to hear what I have to say.

I am not the Patti I once was and believe you me, some of those who “knew me when” wouldn’t recognize the person that I’ve become!

Thank God. He took me from broken to beautiful, and blessed me to bless others. Share on X

My journey has taken me along many roads, smooth-paved freeways to pot-holed paths. There were times when I wandered off and lost myself but God never lost me, and He always gently guided me back to where I was meant to be.

By the way, I’m not saying that I’ve fully arrived, because it seems to me that when we get to a resting place in our journey, and start to settle in and get a little too comfortable, God is soon nudging us on to the next thing!  We are all works in progress, being transformed (hopefully) from glory-to-glory. (II Cor. 3:18)

Now just so this 31 days doesn’t become all about me, I intend to throw in an Old Things New DIY or two, or three, along the way.

Today I’ll begin by introducing myself to those who don’t know me, or those who think they do and might find themselves surprised over the next 31 days:

I’m sometimes scattered, often last minute, and almost always hard on myself when I mess up; I am an introverted-extrovert who needs people until I get tired, and then I can hardly wait to be ALL BY MYSELF; I enjoy entertaining in my home better than going to other people’s homes, but still, I want you to invite me over so I feel included as your friend; I have a super clean car (it just came from the detailer) that will soon be a mess of red dirt paw prints on creamy leather seats and doggie boogers on the windows; I love food but not exercise, and I exercise out of necessity, not choice; I despise (yes, despise is a strong word and I’m still trying to work on the root of that) paperwork and paying bills but again, a necessity; one of my love languages is coffee with friends, especially friends who make me laugh because I LOVE to laugh; I adore my husband of twenty-five years, my two adult daughters, my son-in-law, my two dog buddies, my four grand kitties, and my grand puppy; the lake is my happy place.

MOST important of all, I am a child of God, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, healed, set free and delivered from sin and shame, blessed with a God-given purpose, anointed for that purpose, and sometimes bravely, sometimes not, dedicated to walking it out in my daily life.

If you’ve read this far I’m hoping that means you’ll come back tomorrow for DAY 2.

Blessings,

P.S. If you know someone who might need to hear a story of redemption please share the word!

Welcome! I am Perfectly Imperfect Patti and I’d like to invite you to come in and take a seat in this creative space of mine.

I love the process of hunting for orphaned and cast off furniture (particularly my Chosen Chairs) and then taking the time to transform each piece into something new and beautiful. This process allows me to reflect upon my own story of transformation and blesses me over and over with each piece I redesign.

For those wondering if this program really works, For those wondering if this program really works, I’m still going strong with @e2mfitness after four rounds, and now that they’ve released a new cookbook (available on Amazon) I am more excited than ever about my fitness journey. This is the first in a series of cookbooks, and this one features delicious beef and poultry recipes. It also includes dozens of recipes for dressings and spice blends to use in cooking, along with a weekly meal planner, water tracker, weekly exercise log, etc.
What is E2M? It is a virtual, eight week, rapid body transformation program for adults, which consists of workouts, meal, plans, cooking classes, mental fitness, and personal coaching. Workouts are designed for all fitness levels and can be done at home or in a gym. Our fit family is made up of people from across the world, from various backgrounds and ages, and we all have one common goal: to encourage each other to reach our personal best lifestyle fitness goals. After the first eight weeks, the program is available for free to maintain progress. This isn’t about getting skinny. It’s about building a healthier lifestyle, living longer, and getting the most out of the one body you’ve been blessed with. The next round opens on Thursday, and I truly hope you’ll check it out!

“In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and “In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and creator of the Peanuts comic strip, was asked to create a Christmas special for CBS featuring the Peanuts Characters. He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

It wasn’t until a few years back that I realized a “hidden message” in the film. Linus, a child who seems to have some insecurities as he carries a security blanket with him at all times. In fact, Linus NEVER drops his blanket, except once....

While sharing the message of “what Christmas is all about,” Linus drops his blanket at the exact moment he says the words, “fear not!”

In this seemingly innocent moment, Linus delivers a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. We are to “fear not”, for Jesus is born. We needn’t rely on material things for security, we have God with us, “Immanuel”, (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior - the true meaning of Christmas.

Awhile back, someone informed me, indignantly so, that Linus picks up his blanket at the end of the speech so my interpretation must be wrong. Well, he was right, Linus does pick up his blanket at the end of his speech. However, he “drops” it again later...

Amid big, bright, colorful, shiny artificial trees, Charlie Brown chose the least of these, a little, wooden tree with just a few branches. Shortly thereafter, Linus uses his blanket to wrap about the base of the tree and says, “Maybe it just needs a little love”. In that moment, the tree “awakens”, stands tall and firm. A reminder that no matter who we are, how many mistakes we’ve made, a “little love” can make all the difference.

Let’s strive to “fear not” (Luke 2:10) and “love one another” (John 13:34), not just at Christmastime, but the whole year through.”
