4 Techniques for Refinishing Furniture to Look Vintage

May 26, 2016 by Patti 2 Comments

Hi sweet friends!  Today I’m happy to have Amy Spagnola doing guest posting to show you some simple tricks for making any piece of furniture look like a precious vintage piece. Welcome Amy!

Distress Success: 4 Clever Ways to Make New Furniture Look Aged

While many of the furniture projects on Old Things New focus on updating or repurposing existing furniture into something fresh and fabulous, there are times when people want to take something new and turn it into something old. Say WHAT?!?

Yep, that’s right, we’ve heard that there are some folks craving a vintage vibe to their recently purchased pieces; whether it’s a dresser, high chair or vanity, retro lovers want a flea market feel and we’re here to inspire!

Here are some refinishing technique ideas to turn that brand new piece into a classic antique:

Sandy Dandy  Luxedecor1

Take a modern dresser and give it a shabby chic facelift by sanding off the existing surface. By roughing up the top layer of newbie furniture, the surface will appear to be suffering from a super strength spa peel. A rough and crackling appearance offers the ultimate distressed signature. A stripped dresser can be left alone or additional paint, priming and sanding can convey a French cottage feel.

Hammer Time Luxedecor2For furniture that looks like it came from an Old West saloon, it’s best to scrape and smack. There’s no quicker way to achieve a rustic renaissance than with a lot of tools and some anger to boot. For achieving that timeworn look, using a hammer or a chain and lightly banging and beating will produce dings and nicks that will appear as though the furniture has lived a long life.

 Glaze for the Old Days

luxedecor3Found at most home improvement stores, tinted antiquing glaze can be used to take a new piece of furniture and give it an old school twinge. Whether it’s a medicine or china cabinet that gets the old overhaul, this technique is sure to take a modern furniture piece and give it a blast from the past.

Hard Knock Life

Less of a finishing technique and more of a DIY trick, using antique handles will add classic charm to any furniture piece. Victorian, French and Art Deco hardware designs all have a timeworn appearance. Adding vintage brass pulls and knobs to desks, dressers and doors will impart chic historic flair.

Sounds like the thing to do is to leave the furniture in a room of kids with tools and let them play. My brothers did some fine work on our parents’ coffee tables when they were little.

We used to live next to a very elegant design shop and in the back, when the shop was closed, they’d take new furniture and swing heavy chains at it to make it look worn. They were also big fans of spray paint. We always had a good chuckle when they were out back on a lovely day roughing up the furniture that would then be displayed with huge price tags attached. I love getting a peek at the techniques!
