Help! Which Color Should I Paint my Rocker?

February 27, 2015 by Patti 24 Comments

Rocking Chair Before 008

This chair is beautiful to me.  As a child I would sit rocking as I looked out at the water in from our lakefront cabin.  I would hold my hand just beneath my eyes to block out the cabin’s porch and the beach beyond so I could see only the water.   That made it easy to pretend that I was sitting on the deck of a cruise ship bound for distant lands.

Seriously, that’s what I did!

After years of being bounced from home to home and spending some time on the deck of our former lake house in Washington I was almost ready to take it off to the dump.

Rocking Chair 003

Almost . . . but not quite.

Along came Mr. OTN to the rescue!  My dear hubby has been removing old cane and glue from the channels, as well as removing the rusted screws that had broken off inside the chairs arms and bleaching away the black mold.  Now he’s ready to tackle the job of re-caning.  What a gift of love.

I’ve decided that my old rocker deserves some color and this is where you, the most brilliant readers in the world, come in.

The Porch is my Happy Place 001

We will be using the rocker on the screened porch which has neutral colored furniture and blue accents so I’d like to paint it in a blue tone.

Rocking Chair 005

These are the colors I’m considering:

  1. Duck Egg
  2. Greek Blue
  3. Provence
  4. A random color of Behr clearance paint

The color of my sample board is close to the color of the caning, which we aren’t painting, so you can see what the contrast would look like.  The colors here are a tad bit washed out but I had to brighten them up a lot so you could see the true color.

So what do you think?  What’s your favorite, one, two, three or four?  We hope to get to the painting this weekend so I’d absolutely love to hear your opinion!

Blessings to you,

My Signature

The Provence seems to be the best choice to also pick up your glass colors .

    Patti,
    I vote for #3 Provence!!!
I believe that when you gaze upon this hue it will, once again, bring
” I would hold my hand just beneath my eyes to block out the cabin’s porch
and the beach beyond so I could see only the water.” this to your memory.
I’ll be watching for a reveal, dear friend!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

I must preface my comment by saying I am not a decorator, but when I squint (my Mother taught me that) at the color of the cane, the porch & the four colors you are contemplating, I personally would not choose any of them. If the picture colors are accurate on my screen, none of the colors work with the cane for me. Also, all four colors blend in to the porch colors. I would prefer such a special piece of furniture to stand on its own. Not clash so to speak, but make its own beautiful statement. But then I have only had one cup of coffee this morning! I will be looking forward to the finished piece & presentation in the completed porch picture.

I’m thinking the Provence is the best one. It appears softer, yet bold enough to hold its own, and will pick up the other blue/greens you have in there.

How fun it will be to sit in that chair again and revisit all those cherished memories!

I like the soft and more neutral PROVENCE….. it will stay in fashion for a long time to come, and it is blue enough
to represent blue…. would be soo darling. Hope you pick Provence…..

I think the Provence or Duck Egg. I LOVE the Greek Blue but think it will stick out in your space. Also, the contrast with the cain might be a bit much. It will be lovely no matter what you do!

I like Duck Egg myself. It’s hard to tell on your sample board. It looks like it has a somewhat metallic/sheen? If so you may want to go with Provence. It’s hard to say what it would look like on the actual piece.
