Layered Colors for a Vintage Side Table

April 22, 2014 by Patti 24 Comments

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve shared any painted furniture pieces with you.  Though I love decorating and crafting, transforming an old piece of furniture into something new is my absolute favorite project to tackle!  MMS Vintage Side Table 002This vintage side table started it’s life in the 1940’s and who knows where her travels may have taken her before I found her in a garage FULL of furniture collected by another old furniture lover like me!

vintage side table before 001This is what she looked like when I brought her home, where she quickly joined the pile in my OWN garage until I could decide exactly what I was going to do with her.  Sometimes it takes a little time to “see” what something will become.

MMS Vintage Side Table 003This side table was one of my first experiences with Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint.  Though I use many different types of paints I really do LOVE MMS.  I love the fact that you never know what it is going to do!  You paint it on and it may cover completely, or it may start doing that magical “chippy” thing all on it’s own, making your creation look as if it’s been aged over time.  It is SO much fun . . . IF you like surprises . . . and I do!

MMS Vintage Side Table 004 I  used three different MMS colors (Ironstone, Luckett’s Green and Kitchen Scale) and just played with it . . .

painting, drying, allowing the chipping process to take place, waxing in different areas, and painting again . . .

until it arrived at the place of pure perfection!

MMS Vintage Side Table 005Perfectly chippy, crackly, distressed and aged with layers of colors showing through.

MMS Vintage Side Table 001Have I told you before how much furniture painting makes me think of the layers in our own lives,

MMS Vintage Side Table 005the layers of experience that make us who we are?

MMS Vintage Side Table 006I want to be rich in lovely layers that I embrace as a part of my unique experience . . .

MMS Vintage Side Table 007. . . and accept that all those layers (whether good or bad) had a part in making me who I am today.

MMS Vintage Side Table 009No regrets or wishing I could cover up the “distressed” portions of my life so as to appear more perfect . . . but a simple acceptance of things as they are . . .

MMS Vintage Side Table 010 . . . and the knowledge that God created me just as I am . . .

MMS Vintage Side Table 011. . . layers, lines, cracks and all!

 This is true beauty!

    Hi Patti,
Love your table and how you accessorized it as well. Never heard anyone talk about how the Miss Mustard seed paint
does all that…………that is very cool. Also loved you wonderful and true analogy about the painting process vs our lives.
    Great analogy by the way………..
That is all so true, sorta like baking a cake all the ingredients might not taste good by themselves but when you put
them all together you get quite a tasty cake, so it is with us too, we might have some quite unsavory things happen
to us, but it is all in the making us into the peson God wants us to become.

Hope you had a lovely Easter,
    Blessings, Nellie

This was my first time to visit and I enjoyed it very much.

I love that color, nice to see a break from the white. I now think I may do something like this on a table of mine. Love those books with the twine wrapped around them.

I love your layered table Patti – so pretty! And what a thoughtful message. We really are all an accumulation of layers. That’s what makes us who we are!
