The L.A. Flower Market!

March 23, 2014 by Patti 22 Comments

01-Flower District LA 004-001A couple of weeks ago I took a long weekend trip to Pasadena to visit my youngest daughter Bethany.  It was so great to spend time with her and to soak up some warm southern California sunshine.  Bethany had a weekend of “things to do” and “places to eat” planned out for me.  One of those things was  the L.A. Flower Market.  We walked through acres and acres of live flowers and it was fantastic.  Are you ready for some floral loveliness?

06-Flower District LA 014I don’t know what these are but they look like moss on a stick and they used them in several pre-made arrangements.  Loved!

11-Flower District LA 019One of the vendors created all of these amazing succulent displays in driftwood and she graciously allowed me to take pictures.  What at artist!

16-Flower District LA 033-001Can anyone help me with the name of these flowers?  I love their lime green color and I bought some artificial swags of this plant to make a wreath for my Spring Chandy (post upcoming).

19-Flower District LA 039-001

20-Flower District LA 036-001More hydrangeas.  I would love some hydrangeas in this color for my yard.

21-Flower District LA 030-001The blooms were gigantic.

22-Flower District LA 041-001This is my daughter Bethany, prettier than any flower 🙂

25-Flower District LA 022-001

27-Flower District LA 038-001Roses, roses and more roses.

The L.A. Flower Market was phenomenal!  I’ve shown you pictures of just one shop, the original market, but there are several smaller shops, many with complete arrangements available for immediate purchase.  We weren’t allowed to take pictures but I have one arrangement “in my head” that I’d like to try (hydrangeas, roses and moss).  Yes, it is because of people like me that pictures aren’t allowed!  We walked through several of the artificial flower shops as well where some of the flowers were hard to tell apart from the real thing.  I purchased some artificial flowers to bring home with me because the prices made them too hard to pass up!

1-Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog in LA 006Our final stop was at a street vendor in the market where we enjoyed grilled, bacon wrapped hot dogs with all the trimmings.  Onions, tomatoes, avocado, cilantro, ketchup and mustard.  Wowsers!  I’m already planning a BBQ at my house where we’ll serve these delicious L.A. Hot Dogs!

What a perfect topper to an already wonderful day and just the beginning of my weekend fun (more posts upcoming).

Blessings,

OH. MY. GOODNESS! You lucky, lucky girl….I would’ve thought I’d died and gone to flower heaven….there IS such a place, right? I know the best part was being with your daughter….it always is the best part for me when I get to spend time with mine. And I am so, so ready for Spring…yes, I know it’s officially here, but I mean the Spring weather! By the way, I’m wondering about those hot dogs. Do you suppose the bacon needs precooking before being wrapped around the dog? Otherwise, it wouldn’t have time to cook thoroughly AND get crispy, before the hot dogs were parched dry as a bone. It sure looks tasty and I think we’ll have to try them, too!

    Patti,
I have NO idea the names of the plantings you inquired about. . .but I do agree they’re amazing!!!
    Hydrangea are sometimes difficult.
The color of the bloom will change hue with the acidity of your soil.
“Mr. Ed” and I spoke over the weekend of attending a local greenhouse and nursery
for the Season and these photos have me looking for an opening in our schedule!
Your daughter, Bethany is a gorgeous gal, indeed!
Now about that L.A. Hot Dog. . .YuMMy!!!
Thank you for taking us along on this virtual trip to the Flower Market!!!

The green flowers are amaranth, commonly called love lies bleeding because they also bloom in red.

I live near by and have been going to the LA Flower Mart for over 25 years. It never ceases to amaze me. Especially at 6am. I have always taken my boys, who are now 37 & 35.
When they were young they were chosen to go to the mart to help select the Christmas flowers for church. Everyone was amazed when they knew their way around.
If you ever get the chance to go, check out the vendors in the surrounding blocks. Great florals everywhere. Thanks for sharing.

Will be looking into your friends website, what incredible things she makes, love the bulbs. Target had some of those bulbs on clearance but I only bought one, kicking myself. Going to that flea market must have been incredible, how do you decide how you’ll spend your money?
Can’t believe we lived in San Diego area for 21 years, never went to flower market. Sure missed a wonderful experience. I love those teal hydrangeas, so gorgeous. Hard to grow hydrangeas here, we have so much alkali in our soil, have to amend and amend soil to grow anything. Now in KY you just dig a hole, stick plant in soil and off it goes. Wonder how my hydrangea is doing I planted.
I was surprised when my lilac bushes finally bloomed last year after 4 yrs. I’d like to get couple of bushes I saw advertised that bloom several times. Do you think they really do or just way to get people to spend money?
Love your blog, have to subscribe, don’t want to miss another post.
Your daughter is so pretty, how proud you must be of her. What a great trip you had. Going to that flea market. Never got to it either, we had couple decent ones in San Diego we’d go to but never one you visited. We were too busy going to the river outside Yuma, AZ most of the time we lived in S.D. or doing things with our kids now 44, 50,51, and 53. Going to the beach also, I’m a water nut, love the beach, rivers, lakes, we had a nice boat in those days, left San Diego to move to MT, dumbest thing we ever did was moving to KY.
Hope you’re having some pretty Spring weather, ours is trying but still chilly, yesterday was in 40’s and sleeted for while today in 50’s with wind, good for drying laundry I just hung out. We live few miles west of Grand Junction, CO on what is called Western Slope. Happy days

Welcome! I am Perfectly Imperfect Patti and I’d like to invite you to come in and take a seat in this creative space of mine.

I love the process of hunting for orphaned and cast off furniture (particularly my Chosen Chairs) and then taking the time to transform each piece into something new and beautiful. This process allows me to reflect upon my own story of transformation and blesses me over and over with each piece I redesign.

“In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and “In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and creator of the Peanuts comic strip, was asked to create a Christmas special for CBS featuring the Peanuts Characters. He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

It wasn’t until a few years back that I realized a “hidden message” in the film. Linus, a child who seems to have some insecurities as he carries a security blanket with him at all times. In fact, Linus NEVER drops his blanket, except once....

While sharing the message of “what Christmas is all about,” Linus drops his blanket at the exact moment he says the words, “fear not!”

In this seemingly innocent moment, Linus delivers a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. We are to “fear not”, for Jesus is born. We needn’t rely on material things for security, we have God with us, “Immanuel”, (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior - the true meaning of Christmas.

Awhile back, someone informed me, indignantly so, that Linus picks up his blanket at the end of the speech so my interpretation must be wrong. Well, he was right, Linus does pick up his blanket at the end of his speech. However, he “drops” it again later...

Amid big, bright, colorful, shiny artificial trees, Charlie Brown chose the least of these, a little, wooden tree with just a few branches. Shortly thereafter, Linus uses his blanket to wrap about the base of the tree and says, “Maybe it just needs a little love”. In that moment, the tree “awakens”, stands tall and firm. A reminder that no matter who we are, how many mistakes we’ve made, a “little love” can make all the difference.

Let’s strive to “fear not” (Luke 2:10) and “love one another” (John 13:34), not just at Christmastime, but the whole year through.”
