Glorious Fall Blooms in a Carpenter’s Box

October 9, 2013 by Patti 28 Comments

11-Hydrangeas in tool box 054What a wild mix of colors in these Glorious Fall Blooms, freshly picked from my garden.

02-Hydrangeas in tool box 020Blooms that started out in softer Summer hues have aged to the deeper, richer colors of Autumn.

01-Hydrangeas in tool box 010My hydrangeas, which first bloomed pale blue have changed to a deeper blue, green, and even purple in tone.

The Seedum ‘Autumn Joy’ from light pink to a deep, rich burgandy.

04-Hydrangeas in tool box 041Last Spring, when we took our trip to the Long Beach Peninsula, I found this weathered carpenter’s box while out junking.  I replaced the handle with a piece of gnarled driftwood that I picked up on the beach, and I’ve been waiting for the perfect time to use it in an arrangement on my kitchen counter.

15-Hydrangeas in tool box 064You can still see the word “tools” that the builder of this box nailed into it’s side. It makes me wonder at the history.  Just like the flowers, the weathered wood and the imperfections make it more interesting than something that is brand new.

06-Hydrangeas in tool box 044

07-Hydrangeas in tool box 046

10-Hydrangeas in tool box 051The colors of my flowers are more intense this year than in years past.   Our long, dry summer contributed to the difference.

13-Hydrangeas in tool box 057

10-Hydrangeas in tool box 05105-Hydrangeas in tool box 042

This arrangement isn’t in the usual oranges and browns of Fall but I actually prefer the cooler tones for my living space.

16-Hydrangeas in tool box 071Like little jewels, they make me feel so happy.

03-Hydrangeas in tool box 021Though my flower’s first blooms were clear in color, absent of spots or discoloration,  I think they’ve become more beautiful with the imperfections of age.  We talk of faded blooms but there is nothing faded about these beauties!  My friend Yvonne over at Stone Gable inspired me with pictures of her hydrangeas in the post, PATINA . . . Becoming More Beautiful With Age.  She writes about our narrow definition of beauty and how we could learn from the flowers to wear the patina of age gloriously.  I really want to learn to do that, and to do it well.  If you’ve never visited Yvonne I hope you will.  Her posts are always so inspiring and her blog is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen.

This week, my prayer for you is that you’d enjoy and embrace your own season of life.  They are all a gift from God.

Blessings,

I am loving your flowers, so gorgeous, the colors are so pretty, jewel like. Also love your tool box and the handle especially, it’s one of a kind. Great post, Fall colors are what you love in your home. I noticed some of the gals on blog land are using black and white, it looks great also.
” What ever floats your boat” as my oldest son always liked to tell me. That was when I was trying to tell him to do something. By the time he was16 he was 6’3″ tall and would look down at me when I’d talk to him
You’re really lucky to have such gorgeous hydrangeas and other flowers. We have very dry alkali soil so it’s hard to grow things in it. I’m not much of a gardener anyway. I get allergies from all pollen.

Patti, I love the flowers – there deep hues against the worn tool box…. beautiful… I have also been reminded of late that it is important to embrace the season of our lives and accept where we are with joy. Sometimes a difficult thing to do but, with God’s help so doable… thanks for the inspiration… Cathy

Welcome! I am Perfectly Imperfect Patti and I’d like to invite you to come in and take a seat in this creative space of mine.

I love the process of hunting for orphaned and cast off furniture (particularly my Chosen Chairs) and then taking the time to transform each piece into something new and beautiful. This process allows me to reflect upon my own story of transformation and blesses me over and over with each piece I redesign.

“In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and “In 1965, Charles Schulz, a devout Christian and creator of the Peanuts comic strip, was asked to create a Christmas special for CBS featuring the Peanuts Characters. He agreed with one requirement, that they allow him to include the story of the birth of Jesus. Although the stations executives were hesitant and tried to convince him otherwise, Schulz was insistent. As a result, for the past 50 plus years, millions of people have watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and heard the story of Jesus and “what Christmas is all about.”

It wasn’t until a few years back that I realized a “hidden message” in the film. Linus, a child who seems to have some insecurities as he carries a security blanket with him at all times. In fact, Linus NEVER drops his blanket, except once....

While sharing the message of “what Christmas is all about,” Linus drops his blanket at the exact moment he says the words, “fear not!”

In this seemingly innocent moment, Linus delivers a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. We are to “fear not”, for Jesus is born. We needn’t rely on material things for security, we have God with us, “Immanuel”, (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior - the true meaning of Christmas.

Awhile back, someone informed me, indignantly so, that Linus picks up his blanket at the end of the speech so my interpretation must be wrong. Well, he was right, Linus does pick up his blanket at the end of his speech. However, he “drops” it again later...

Amid big, bright, colorful, shiny artificial trees, Charlie Brown chose the least of these, a little, wooden tree with just a few branches. Shortly thereafter, Linus uses his blanket to wrap about the base of the tree and says, “Maybe it just needs a little love”. In that moment, the tree “awakens”, stands tall and firm. A reminder that no matter who we are, how many mistakes we’ve made, a “little love” can make all the difference.

Let’s strive to “fear not” (Luke 2:10) and “love one another” (John 13:34), not just at Christmastime, but the whole year through.”
