Three Tiered Succulants

June 26, 2013 by Patti 47 Comments

My Goodwill has a large section of decorative wire containers in their home decor department.  I found this little 3-tiered guy while taking my weekly power walk through the store and I knew exactly what his new purpose for existence would be! Please excuse the poor quality picture. Does anyone know how to enlarge iPhone pics without distorting them?
This one would not be relegated to kitchen duty. Instead, he was going to become a majestic 3-tiered succulent “fountain”.

Three-tier succulent planter

Lined with a little Spanish moss (also found at the thrift store) and some potting soil he was all ready for some succulents poked in at random. Planting succulents really is that easy. They don’t have a large root system, can be poked in just about anywhere and survive with very little water.

I just love the mix of color and texture in these fun-to-grow plants.

This is the day of planting.

And here he is today.  Succulents grow quite fast, it’s only been a month.  I can’t wait to see what he’ll look like by the end of the summer.

Both Costco and our local Fred Meyer carry large flats of assorted succulents so I not only had enough for this planter but had enough leftover to poke them into several pots around my yard.

If you haven’t tried succulents I encourage you to do so. They are inexpensive bought buy the flat, easy to grow and add great color to the garden.
     Blessings,

Wow, how lucky are YOU to find such great stuff at Goodwill!! I love the wall planter too… I just scored one for $10 at Tuesday Morning’s 80% off sale and have NO idea what to put in it, but it was $10 so I knew I needed it. 🙂 I may try this succulent business.

I love your planter. I have one very lonely “hen” or is it a “chick” in an antique planter that belonged to my grandmother. I need to spend the money to get some more. Thanks for the inspiration.

This is absolutely gorgeous! You are so right too…not only have I seen them at Goodwill, once I had a big tiered wire basket in my cart. Then, I put it back, because I wasn’t as clever as you! That is such a great idea. Now I am bummed I didn’t buy it! I’ll be looking for them now!

I take cuttings from all my non-hearty succulents each season and enjoy using them in the garden… this year I planted an 8′ cattle tank with them and it’s starting to fill out nicely. I think your three tiered baskets are extremely effective! L

That looks so great, very pretty. We don’t have those stores here in Grand Junction, CO but I’ve been told Home Depot might have more succulents.
I’ll have to get some moss to line a basket tree similar to yours, the baskets are further apart and is taller but what a great way to use it.
We have some hens/chicks we brought here with us from KY 9 yrs ago which we’ve divided several times, given some away. Due to extreme cold for long period this past winter some of them died. Love how yours looks so I’ll be getting some more succulents as soon as we can. Glad I found your post as it sure has inspired me. We have an old barrel that was cut in half so think we’ll be filling it also. See what you started?
    Happy summer
