Coastal Tablescape

June 13, 2013 by Patti 40 Comments

I shared with you in a previous post the coastal touches I added to my home this year for the summer season. Today I’m sharing my coastal inspired table decked out for a casual seafood dinner.
Two friends stopped by today and one of them said with a chuckle, “Oh look, all set for dinner.”  These particular friends know me well enough to know that I do a lot more “staging” for photos than I actually have people in for sit down dinners. I sometimes wonder what my non-blogging friends really think of all this silliness of mine, but then it doesn’t really matter because I am having so much fun!
The layers on my table begin with a nice piece of striped fabric that I found while out junking during my trip to Long Beach Peninsula. On top of that are some rough boards (construction leftovers)  that I dry brushed with grey paint.

For the table settings I used a white stoneware set that I found at Goodwill topped with some metal fish plates I bought years ago for a Chinese Restaurant Mystery Dinner.  Remember those mystery dinner games? These plates have come in handy over the years for outdoor dining because they are indestructible.

I randomly placed shells, sand dollars, and driftwood atop the board, as well as a lot of marbles.  Why marbles? They add color and sparkle and they are supposed to look like bubbles!  There are always bubbles at the beach right?  Haha! Humor me please, I like the marbles.

I added some Japanese floats that I found at an antique store awhile back (BIG bubbles).
The driftwood ball (below) was a Mom’s Day gift to myself and while we were at Long Beach I collected several small piece of driftwood thinking that I might try to make my own.
Below is an empty Lucini olive oil bottle that I glued a piece of coral too and  tied with raffia . . . my knock-off of those sold in The Pottery Barn catalog.
My favorite thing about the entire table are the tall aqua candlesticks I found on sale at Home Goods. After hearing so many other bloggers talk about Home Goods we finally have a new one fairly close to home and I plan on making many more “field trips” there in the future. Anyone want to come along?  I also added in some garage sale candlesticks that I painted with Annie Sloan Old White Chalk Paint and distressed heavily.
Sparking mineral water anyone? My bubble marbles keep it nice and cold!
So, what are we having for dinner?  Hubby’s favorite recipe, Grilled Rosemary Garlic Shrimp, along with fresh asparagus and angel hair pasta tossed with olive oil, garlic, toasted pine nuts and freshly grated parmesan cheese.  Mmmm…so delicious!

Thanks so much for stopping by.

It does seem a shame to set such a beautiful table and not invite anyone to dine. Your dishes and pretty glass displays are so summery and carefree. I love the aqua blue glass. Glass marbles really do look like bubbles and it comes across very well in your display. I’m suddenly craving some blue glass myself!

The aqua glass really caught my eye, and I’m so glad it did! I love what you have created here! What a smart idea to use a runner flanked with coordinating mats. The centerpiece is lovely, I think the “bubbles” make it!

Gorgeous! I’m trying to do a coastal inspired tablescape too. My kids live up on the Coast in Seaside, so I’ve been looking for floats. WOW, are they expensive! (The ones I’ve found anyway… even the “faux” ones are spendy)… I found some other things that will work in the meantime and have just filled in a driftwood wreath (Home Goods) with long sea urchin shells. That’s for the wall, and it’s probably our favorite thing so far. Gathering is half the fun, right? (Unless you can’t find any inexpensive floats). 🙂 Love your blog. Best to you!
